Apple Adds Intrusive 'Featured' Section Above 'Up Next' in TV App

I don't know how anyone would be surprised or consider this as a sea change at Apple.

iTunes, or the Music (cr)app as it's called nowaways, has been an ad-fest for years.
So have iOS/iPadOS devices when you set them up, pushing their Apple Music subscription service.

It's just a further progression down that line.

But it’s the adware/hardware integration that’s worth the premium.

So, the featured section thats getting everyones dander raised is just other streaming services advertising their shows. Its not ads for toilet bowl cleaners or other random products that some posts have been hyperbolic to.

The pushback seems rather sensational. With the screenshots I've seen for it on Ventura and iPadOS, it would be a half scroll of a finger to get to Up Next. I'll save my energy if they put advertisements for a car I cannot afford in the middle of season 2 of Severance.
I don’t really use the TV app much. Is the featured section featuring non TV+ shows? If so are you able to watch those shows even if you’re paying for the other streaming services outside of Apple’s IAP?

Yeah, this is nothing unique or strange.

Only service that does this somewhat okay is HBO Max.
All good points. I just expected Apple to be better than those companies

Apple TV was supposed to be different, not just another one of the pack.
Guess that has changed.

I got up this morning and turned on my coffee maker. It didn’t suggest tea or hot chocolate. It didn’t tell me I should try Starbucks coffee.

I put in a load of laundry. My washing machine didn’t say anything about which detergent I should use.

I’ve always respected Apple for (arguably) not selling my data.
I just expect them to be better than the rest.

I buy their devices.
I subscribe to their services.

That should be enough.

Remember when you’d bring a new device home, and it’s job was to just serve your needs? I’m getting tired of paying for stuff that just going to sit there plotting how to best manipulate me into meeting its revenue targets.
And now that appliances are smart/phone home/have cellular it’s (or soon will be) everywhere.

This is terrible ... as bad as having ads in weather, news, music, App Store, etc I'm starting to dislike the whole Apple One in general ... I switched in 2006 from Winbloat to avoid this mess, now every app across all devices has suggestions, featured, ads, and whatever else without the ability to turn it off ... Why do I still see ads if I already pay for AppleOne Premium for iCloud space, music, and AppleTV,

... ditched News for this very reason - it was getting too annoying with the suggested and constantly pressing thumbs down without it making any difference.

“There does not appear to be a way to turn off autoplay for featured shows and movies.”

Yes, there is. I bought a Roku 4K stick yesterday from BB for $25 in a pre-Black Friday sale. It works perfectly streaming Dolby Vision and HDR10+ from more services than even Apple and avoids the Apple intrusion. The competitive market for hardware streamers is a great thing.
And they’re monitoring and selling your info to anyone that wants it. There’s always a compromise.

Right however it's the principle of "I'm aware of this show and have absolutely zero desire to watch it, stop showing it to me" and still having it shoved in our face.

This whole thing smacks of the ATV+ team saying “we need to put our shows in front of absolutely everyone at all times to get higher streaming numbers so we can get more considerations for awards shows” Doesn’t it feel like this started happening a short while after Coda won whatever award it won?

The only reason I go to the Apple TV launch page is for the clear and concise "Up Next" section that is now completely obfuscated. I currently pay for Apple TV plus so what are they gaining by objectively making the user experience worse?

I'll definitely stop using that launch page completely as a media gateway (opting for the App screen) and probably just cancel my Apple TV subscription altogether, resubbing once a year to binge the couple Apple TV shows I actually watch.

I pay a premium for Apple devices and expect a premium experience. If their plan is to give us the Amazon firestick experience, I might as well save $130 per device and just get firesticks next upgrade cycle.

So, Apple is advertising apps in their app store and tv shows and movies in their tv app. This sounds reasonable to me. If I see a Viagra add in the app store and/or in the featured section of the tv app, I may have an issue.
I went to put on Snoopy for the kids and was forced to wade through age inappropriate content.

My 90 days free won’t translate to a buy with the way this app has morphed into one worse than Netflix.

That increase is due to the Exchange Rate
They use legal loopholes for tax havens in Europe to dodge taxes and have yet to get that money in USD. Not that this is an Apple thing, it's on Ireland for allowing it for so long. The problem is mostly that when the Euro was stronger they never adjusted for that, 1 USD was always = 1 EUR to them, despite the Euro being stronger, and when it recovers they surely won’t readjust the prices, they rarely do that.
Seems like Apple doesn’t want my money anymore. I wonder what’s happened. In recent months Apple dropped a bomb several times. Few more things like this and Apple will be just a company that sells overpriced devices.
They've been that ever since they started pulling the really ugly hostile tricks. A relatively recent one is when they made the iPhone 12 mini just to raise the price of the regular model only to discontinue the mini (which was never meant to stay, imo).

You still expect Apple to be better? They are in it for profit, nothing more, nothing less. Just like all other companies.

Also EU regulations like DMA and the forced move to USB-C is going to cost Apple billions of dollars. Which forces them to change how they make their profit. Which results into more ads.

If this ad based model is the direction Apple wants to go in, I’ll go back to Windows and suffer on cheaper hardware. I refuse to pay for a premium experience and be subject to ads.
I did that over the past year and I have to say Windows has gotten a lot better than what it used to be. If you are developer who depended on Terminal for work (WSL) Windows Subsystem for Linux is awesome. Managing my iPad with iTunes is so much simpler than all the BS the Mac makes you go through. I use Fedora 36 as well and installed a mac style theme and it's also been great.

I turned off internet access for the music app on my iphone. Now it uses most of the screen to complain that it doesn't have internet access (which it doesn't need), rather than displaying me what I'm actually listening to.

The UI of my iPod Classic, that I migrated to the iphone, was much better - even though the display was much smaller both in physical dimensions and on terms of pixel count.

I recently started using apple tv again because I got another 3 month trial. I found it harder to operate compared to when I used it a year ago with my last free trial.

Register on MacRumors! This sidebar will go away, and you'll see fewer ads.
