I'm all for more content on my Apple Tv but I don't want 80 percent of the apps they put on there. Please let me delete them so it's not some mess of boxes....

I wish half of this crap didn't require cable subscriptions. Why the heck can't I just pay Apple $20 a month or something and get access to all this stuff? They can divide the money appropriately based on how much of each channel I watch.

Apple wins, the networks win, and I win, by not having to pay for a bunch of other content I don't need as well.

But nooooo, the media conglomerates don't want to give up their outdated business models. :(

I agree, and realize it is a popular sentiment.

Really what this does for existing cable consumers is allow them to get rid of their second, rented with a fee per month, cable box. They can use an Apple TV instead. For Comcast in my area, they charge an extra $7 a month for my second cable outlet.

Watch!1!!!!!

Again, I can't express how tacky the ESPN and Disney icons look with the word "Watch" attached to them. Like we're stupid and don't know what selecting them is going to allow us to do.

Imagine how tacky and busy the screen would look if all of the app icons had "Watch" or "Listen" attached to them.

Just tacky.

Whats the point if you need a cable or satellite subscription?

Well, one way I would use it is for my kids rooms. Instead of "renting" another box from the cable company, I can add an appleTV to their rooms and use the Disney as well as stream the kids movies/tv shows I have in mp4 from the home PC. I think it's just a way to get some of the programming on a different set without having to pay the cable company extra.

If they are going to keep adding apps like this, they need to provide a better way to manage them. I won't use most of the recent additions (I don't have a cable subscription and don't watch most professional sports), and the current means of hiding apps is more cumbersome than it needs to be.

I agree... it's getting a bit cluttered in there.

I was going to write a post to this thread about how there are too many "channel" icons now and that we need a way to pare them down to the ones we actually use. I didn’t know there was a method. Could you please elucidate me?

Go to restrictions (used to be parental restrictions) and it will allow you to hide the icons you don't want to see.

no time warner cable
i would go back to pay TV but time warner doesn't want to support anything except Watch ESPN and HBO Go

Not that great for channels that require cable, and a cooperating provider, as well.

Netflix, Amazon Prime (not now and probably never available via Apple TV), and DVD sets provide more than we can consume here.

As a UK user I rarely go below the top line - Netflix & YouTube are the only ones I ever use and it drives me nuts that in Sept 2010 the Apple TV gen 2 device was touted as having BBC iPlayer 'soon' - three years later not a sign of it despite many other devices having that facility.
That said the Apple TV does what I originally bought it (and successors) for - play my audio & video from my iTunes library. It could just be so much better for non-US consumers.

I believe they are trying to differentiate between an on-demand video collection (like Netflix, Hulu), and actually watching live Tv, such as Watch ESPN. For example, the Watch ESPN app allows you to stream the tv channel in real time. I haven't personally tried the Watch Disney one, but I assumed it does that too. If so, it's a nice way to know.

Sure, they could have chosen a better word, such as "live". But as long as it's consistent, it's ok.
Another reason is that both ESPN and Disney are part of the same ownership, so it is likely not an Apple decision, but rather the parent company of those two networks.

About time for MLS.

But I really wish the premium-TV-network channels would allow you to subscribe directly! (Disney, HBO, etc.) I canceled cable because of online services - I shouldn't need to subscribe to cable to get a streaming version of the channel - I should be able to subscribe directly to the streaming version.

Everyone is trying to get somewhere to allow us to truly cut the cable, and IMO, no one is there yet. We need a 1 stop shop.

In my quest to be a cable cutter I have multiple devices trying to replicate a system that is as good as cable.

I have an OTA Antenna for locals (and I get over 25 channels with some really great content on the sub-channels ie. CMT, ION, CW, etc)

I have a FTA Dish which was cheap and provides mostly (over 300) foreign and religious broadcast but has some great news channels (RT, CCTV, Worldnet) and some decent entertainment channels (RTN, Ebru, JTV1, Tuff TV) as well as lots of crazy feeds)

I have a ROKU which I use for my Netflix, Youtube App, and PLEX Server) as well as the "OK" Free stuff like Crackle....

All in all, it's an ok solution content wise but a clunky solution in ease of use. Turn this on, switch that off, etc......

Apple (or any other manufacture) needs consider a device (or a TV) which would incorporate all non-cable solutions into a straight forward, easy to use device. And as mentioned, There has to be a pricing structure for a package of decent channels. If I am going to pay for Disney, NFL, Netflix, Amazon, and whatever else individually - You may as well leave the cable on...

Disney Junior would be really useful to me since my toddler is obsessed with Mickey Mouse. However, I live in Canada, so this is not available.

Also, I've dropped my TV package down to the basic package, so my subscription wouldn't allow me to have access to this anyways.

However, I did buy one season of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse from iTunes, and the little guy will watch the same episodes over and over again, so I guess we're ok.

I do question why they need 3 different Disney apps. Seems like it could all be inside one app, like ESPN is. Its kinda a pain because you have to authorize them separately. Although, I don't think I'll bother with Disney Junior since my kids are a bit old for that. They need to have a way to tie the authorizations to an icloud account so it isn't so involved to authorize all your devices.
