It's so annoying to see these Disney apps show up, when MOST cable subscribers probably don't have access to them. They're only supported by a handful of providers.

Their are more subscribers that have them than don't. Most people are complaining about the apps, yet no one complained when the same apps were on ipad and iphone. In fact, they raved about them. So strange.

The current deal was reported to be $1bn per year. Apple makes that in profit in about a week or two, and could easily afford it if they wanted.

I fully expect Apple and Google to make strong bids in the upcoming negotiations.

Yeah but would they have a big enough return on investment? Since the next deal will be well north of the current $1bn per year, don't know that it makes sense for Apple. If the NFL could get the most out of a deal that included multiple providers, not just DirecTV, then I see it being feasible for Apple to bid.

Anyone else find this "authenticating through an authorized cable provider" to be annoying? Cable companies are desperately trying to hold their power. Too bad they still have so much say in the streaming arena.

I'm all for more content on my Apple Tv but I don't want 80 percent of the apps they put on there. Please let me delete them so it's not some mess of boxes....

Exactly, the AppleTV is of even less interest to the rest of the world other than as a streaming device, but with TVs getting smarter all the time many will have networking built-in soon enough. I know Apple is in bed with Disney but just because I buy Apple products doesn't mean I like the bland, sanitised crap that Disney pumps out.

And with Apple's constant war on jail breaking there's no way I can give it a nice interface or custom applications.

I should be able to access "The Disney Channel" app using my sky ID. I don't see why that would be an issue. Sky wouldn't lose out.

But Sky will have bought the rights for these channels/shows based on an exclusivity clause that they have sole rights. They will then have sold advertising on the channels based on the fact that they have the exclusive rights. Advertisers would hit Sky at the next contract negotiation if they were to allow the shows to be accessible through a medium where no adverts are shown. That would then lead to Sky charging the subscribe MORE to make up the shortfall. I would guess also that the content differs between the UK and US versions of Disney, so that too would need to be resolved

I was attempting to subscribe to MLS Live and the app kept crashing. Looks like they realized it and pushed an update to the Apple TV. Going through the motions now...

where is the Dev kit??!

how do I delete these stupid Apps we dont want or need (ie; home shopping network)

NFL ? you know its FREE on BroadcastTV right.... as in FREE!

HBO ? w/o cable subscription ?

except for when my team isn't on the major NFL broadcast for my area... which is 50% of the time. That's why NFL sunday ticket is huge for me... and would be even better on Apple TV (to do it sans direcTV)

you can hide them ;)

As others have pointed out, more people (myself included)) would readily purchase a subscription to the individual shows that Apple is displaying on it's Apple TV home screen.

However, from an interview with a cable provider on NPR yesterday, the gentleman pointed out that going to a subscription for individual channels will not likely happen for several reasons. One was that some channels are owned by a parent company and that they sell them in a bundle to the cable providers. Another was that for some of these channels, the cost to un-bundle would be greater than bundling. He did say for some high dollar channels, they are looking to see if those can be sold on an individual basis but nothing firm.

As an analogy, the cable representative said that the channels are like the sections of a newspaper, you can't just buy the sports section, you have to buy the whole paper.

I think this mentality will need to change, and we the consumers are the ones who ultimately have the power, to make a difference and force a change.

It's difficult to predict the future if we don't act, or maybe it is, maybe it will just stay the same. However, if we do something, like stop paying for cable tv, then maybe, just maybe the cable providers might actually listen.

Nah, that would never happen.:(

I would love the ability to purchase a subscription to individual channels, but I will NOT pay for cable, it's not worth it.

Mark my words

A lot of people, including myself, find it a pain to have all of those new useless icons on the screen.

Mark my words, next month the next version of AppleTV will debut with a fingerprint scanner built into the remote that allows us to have a completely customized interface depending on who's in control of the remote.

Combine that with Siri, and you got yourself some really cool things. Look out for FaceTime TV as well. I guarantee they are coming. It's just common sense.

We don't want cable subscrition

What does this do for us if we have to have a subscription to a cable service? It's just another step using your Apple TV to watch say Disney if you have to have a cable subscription. Why not watch it from your cable service?

I have an Apple TV and ROKU and I just don't get it. What good are these devices if we have to have a cable subscription to watch the content. To me the purpose of an Apple TV is so I can get away from my expensive cable subscription.

Am I missing something?

I wish half of this crap didn't require cable subscriptions. Why the heck can't I just pay Apple $20 a month or something and get access to all this stuff? They can divide the money appropriately based on how much of each channel

HBO would cost more than that just by itself. The way they bundle with cable companies is much more profitable than selling to individuals without cable.

Those apps didn't show up by default on your iPad/iPhone... and not everyone uses their iPad/iPhone for streaming television content. However, with an Apple TV you EXPECT to stream content. And paying for content, such as for the sports channels, seems normal. But it's weird that these apps would show up by default, and you must bind them to a cable network in order to stream them. This smells of collusion by the cable providers to maintain control over the channels.

I just subscribe to Sunday Ticket for mobile devices (99$ for the service and Madden25 video game through Amazon). I then mirror it from my Ipad to the Apple TV. While it is not fullscreen i still get to watch the games on my TV. Sold the game for $40 so essentially $60 for Sunday ticket.

How's it working so far? I read a significant number of complaints on Amazon about crashing, bad throughput, poor video quality, etc. We've got a very stout connection (Com Biz Class), and opted not to get Sunday ticket this year, but for this price, it's tempting!

As a former employee of NFL Films, I can personally guarantee you that will not happen.

I don't know what you might be privy to, but the contract ends in '14, and just like the quote below, I suspect there to be some serious competition when it's back up for bid.

I fully expect Apple and Google to make strong bids in the upcoming negotiations.

Same here. "Sunday Ticket" (or whatever it might be rebranded as) would be the killer app for AppleTV, I know 4 people right off the top of my head that would run out and buy one (and pay the same price for a sub as they have with DTV).

Directv's deal with the NFL is over after this year. So we don't know who will control Sunday NFL Ticket next year. I can about guarantee if it is anybody but Directv, they will offer a streaming only option on multiple devices. We have also heard rumors that the NFL will take over the streaming portion of Sunday NFL Ticket.

----------

So to sum up the comments (in no particular order):

1) Why no NFL?

Directv controls NFL Sunday Ticket, not the NFL. They don't allow streaming on any set top boxes this year. Luckily their contract is coming up soon.

Cable Killer

With Amazon Prime stream and now if they add NFL Sunday ticket + RedZone, this would put a hurting on the cable co. Get your scissors ready!:apple:

ya more features my cable provider wont support :(

You too?

Thanks for nothing, Mediacom.

I asked them if they had any plans to support the AppleTV platform in the future. They straight up told me no. SMH.
