AppleTV 3.0 wish list:

  • New customizable interface
  • Single-entry user/password for cable service related content
  • Global search
  • Apple TV specific App Store
  • Better remote (keep standard IR so A/V Universal remotes can learn it)
  • External Storage interface (so I can store all my media there and dont need a mac running to watch my ripped movie collection)
  • Modern movie audio capability: Dolby TruHD, DTS Master Audio
  • Broader file format compatibility for media
  • Boosted performance hardware to handle all of the above (chip, memory)

Good list... here's more wishes (but know they won't)

• XBMC (Kodi)
• Plex
• Amazon
• Vudu

Or at LEAST a way to allow users to add them on their own.

0% usage - Apple TV "channels" that requires cable subscription

current Apple TV usage:

95% - airplay from apple devices to sound system and TV
5% - netflix - interface is not nearly as good as ps3. Where's closed captioning anyway?

Why can't they add a similar feature so on the iPhone or iPad you can hide stock apps that are not being used and cluttering the screen?

I take them and put them all in a group and move them to the last page all by themselves. Not what you are asking for, but accomplishes roughly the same thing.

Add me as another Apple TV user who just got a Fire Stick. Tired of waiting for Apple to add Amazon Prime Video, Spotify and others. Really sad how they have let Apple TV get so dormant.
I hope their Spotify app is better than Roku's. However, I much prefer Airplay for audio, so even if the iOS app wasn't superior in every way, it is just more convenient to use on the iPhone/iPad. Personally, I don't want the TV on when I listen to music.

Don't have to have the tv on. It can use Spotify connect so your iPhone can act as a remote.

You can hide them. It's in the settings.

A couple of questions about Fire TV: One thing that I do enjoy is streaming music from my iTunes account via my AppleTV, which is connected to my stereo. Can you do the same via Fire TV? Also, anyone have an idea of when they'll get HBO GO? I use that app frequently. Thanks!

we'd ALL need to cough up about $54/month BEFORE we are actually paying for any channels.

When cable TV first evolved in the 1970s, the promise was that it would be commercial-free because you were paying a monthly subscription fee. We all know how well that went.

As long as most communities have a single cable provider to "choose" from, you will always pay through the nose. And the cable companies (without government regulation) will always try to maximize their profit by any means possible. There's no incentive for them to do otherwise.

Wow, the AppleTV is looking very crowded. I wonder if we're only closer to an 'App Store'.

To be fair, you can actually hide channels which you don't want to appear on your home screen, but this is only a short term solution to the issue. I don't think Apple will be able to escape the fact that AppleTV needs an App Store, for much longer.

Correct but what changes in this new model dream? Someone like Apple can't be a competitor while relying on Cable-owned broadband pipes (unless we want to assume Cable will just roll over and let an Apple take all that revenue without raising broadband rates). It's more likely that Apple will just pile on top- much like they are doing now (where you generally need a cable/satt subscription to unlock most of these app channels). Apple probably doesn't want to go that way but they have no option to bypass the middleman when the middleman is both cable TV competitor and (local monopolistic or duopolisitic if you are lucky) broadband provider.

As you say, they need competition. Lay competitive pipes to every house and don't allow big cable to buy out such competitors and you get competition. However, in just about every thread about this "new model", we consumers usually want the replacement to cost a fraction of what the current model costs now. So who pays for laying all that pipe? And that won't be cheap (and wireless doesn't have enough bandwidth for all of us to have on-demand video even if the Gov freed up the rest of the applicable spectrum).

The new model we want comes if the various players can make MORE money by switching. They can't make more money if the source of the money gets to pay a lot less.

Amazon Instant Video is never coming to the AppleTV, you'd be waiting forever. You can watch Amazon Instant Video on your AppleTV using AirPlay from your iPad or iPhone. Amazon Instant Video is a competitor to iTunes movie rentals and purchases and there is no way Apple is going to help Amazon in this way. They are a competitor. Spotify is the same. You can use it on your ATV using AirPlay for your iPad or iPhone. Otherwise, it's a competitor to Beats now. It's never going to happen either. Not sure why people keep thinking that Apple might ever add those apps.

Let's see, ~$120/mo for the couple dozen channels I want, vs. what I have now, ~$100/mo for several hundred channels of which I actually watch 9-10. I'll take that deal

If you think a couple dozen channels is going to cost you $120, then you don't really realize how much each show costs to produce. I don't even think you can purchase a couple dozen seasons of ONE show for under $120.... Let alone entire channels.

The reason why cable can sell you a couple hundred channels for $100 is they get it in bulk and sell you in bulk. And the advertising on those channels you don't watch pays for the content you do watch which believe it or not, helps keep your costs down.

----------

Exactly, cable companies have had it too good for too long. We pay them to watch channels that they pack with ads that they also get paid for. By cutting out cable companies the networks can sell to us directly and improve the quality if programming beyond all this low budget reality crap.

The networks are making money hand over fist from cable companies. Can you promise them they will make the same or more with a different model?

while they've still got a finger to stick in each ear and an eyelid to cover each eye, I'm sure they'll manage it :(

Finally Charter Communication allows their customers to access Fox Now and CNBC on Apple TV sad part is Charter customers still can not access HBO Go, Showtime Anytime, History Channel, Lifetime, A&E and FYI. Either way Fox Now looks pretty useless if you have Fox On Demand it is pretty much all the same thing, I would have expected Fox Now it least have previous seasons of their shows or TV Series that are no longer on TV like Married With Children or The X-Files.

Still waiting for Amazon Prime on Apple TV and Apple knows this would be major if they add Amazon Prime.

Oh yeah I guess I didnt get into specific Apps but yes on yours. Add these two upgrades also and we have the class leader Apple should be producing:

  • 4k video
  • Optional gaming controller (for games in the ATV App Store of course!)

Like several others who have posted, I own both an ATV and recently an Amazon Fire Stick. The Fire Stick is a far more enjoyable experience. Apple has stagnated in so many areas. Sadly, I don't see that changing until it starts to affect their bottom line. It's frustrating to see so much untapped potential for a device like ATV.

Just got the Fire TV stick yesterday. Haven't had too much time to play around with it yet, but it seems pretty good. You can actually download what you want instead of having to hide what you don't want...

i've been wondering how to run cable to my tv from security cameras and yesterday i tried the app store on my fire tv stick downloaded ip cam viewer. it's amazing! now i can view all my cameras without running cable. overall it's much faster than my roku 2xs
