More content online compared to cable

So I have to buy a cable subscription to watch a channel on Apple TV that I can already watch on my existing cable? What's the point of this?

I watch the Premier League. NBC Sports shows every game live either on TV or online. Sometimes the game I want to watch, is not on TV but online only. This will let me watch on Apple TV, without having to mess about with airplay (and its stutters!)

I've been waiting for this one for a while.

Momentum Toward Apple/Comcast Partnership for New AppleTV?

I'm surprised the article didn't mention this, and (to my knowledge) no one in the comments section either...

Isn't this the first - or at least one of the first - NBC (and therefore Comcast-owned) AppleTV channels? That they've reached an agreement for their sports content, which is undoubtedly their most expensive content (and therefore presumably the most difficult to negotiate), has to bode well for the rumored revamped AppleTV set top that would need to be tightly integrated with cable operators - the biggest being Comcast. See where I'm going with this?!?

Hopefully this marks a significant hurdle cleared that helps pave the way for a long-overdue AppleTV update at WWDC...

Exactly. Not all cable providers offer the Premier League extra channels, and some of them don't offer them in HD. The app will allow US cable/sat customers to watch all the matches live in HD. There are other events streamed live by NBC Sports that aren't available on cable, as well.

I don't get the point

Okay...so you need to have a cable or satellite subscription to access apps like NBC...that's nothing is new.

I don't have a cable/satellite subscription. Actually, we just cut the cord from DirecTV a month ago. Willingly.

But here's my question to NBC (as if they care): you already have NBCSN on cable and satellite AND you have an NBCSN app for mobile. Why, then, do you need an Apple TV app?

I mean...if I had cable/satellite, I would watch the games on there. Not Apple TV. Duh!

And guess what? If you have cable/satellite but don't subscribe to NBCSN (like programming without sports), you can't get the games on Apple TV either. You have to get the programming on cable/satellite to get access to them on Apple TV.

So...what's the point?

I'd love to be able to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs on NBCSN on Apple TV. But that won't happen.

This is a worthless app in my opinion.

wow, this is the only channel i honestly cared about since I am big F1 fun and finally is available on ATV!.
I am really hoping that the app will allow to view the replays as many qualifications/races are in the middle of the night my local time so waking up in the middle of the night is not the most convenient for me.

Let us know if it works for you - I'm able to authenticate the new app on my ATV, but I'm not seeing any F1 content, aside from the "highlights" stuff. NBC Sports Extra app on the iPhone shows full replays, etc.

This NBC Sports 'channel' is progress, but like roughly half of the 'channels' on Apple T.V., it requires a cable subscription. It would be great to be able to watch Baseball games without having to subscribe to cable or the $100/year MLB.T.V. service.

I agree. The NHL offers NHL GameCenter Live on Apple TV BUT with limitations. You can't access games shown nationally or games for teams in your market. Or the playoffs. This has to do with NBC and the fact that NHL doesn't have the leverage that the NFL or NBA has.

In Canada, where NBC has no say, all playoff games are live on GameCenter Live. Interesting.

I think this might actually be useful. Would've been nice at the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but at least I can watch nationally televised hockey games on my Apple TV. Still can't believe NHL Gamecenter can't do that...

Agreed, the only time this is channel is worth it is being able to watch live events, and the Apple TV being hooked up to a TV that isn't already connected to a cable/satellite receiver. I don't need it to watch replays, I can find replays and highlights all over the Internet after the event is over.

Still not seeing the new NBC sports app on my three Apple TVs. Rebooted all three, no new app as of yet.

I'm super pumped about this app! After a couple of restarts, however, still not showing up on my AT3. I hope it will stream regional content like their iOS apps.

For those asking why you would use it if you already have cable, do you ever take your Apple TV with you when you travel? It's nice to just plug it in and have all my stuff set up.

Are you sure you're not missing the way high up live extra channels? I thought I didn't get them on Brighthouse , but turns out they were in the 1900s

Yep. Completely worthless. Video clips? Highlights? Terrific.

Call me when you can watch live content without being a cable slut. Until then....this is as useless as a football bat.

This is exciting! This is the only app I still airplay regularly. Wish they would've had this out at the beginning of the Premier League season, but better late than never!

It's weird; I did a reset on my Apple TV (latest generation) earlier today and the NBC Sports app was there; I was able to log in with my DirecTV info and watch it. But then I updated to the latest Apple TV software and the icon is gone and is not reappearing after even rebooting it. Maybe the Apple TV only checks for new channels every so often? Does anyone know how that works? I really don't want to reset it again just to get this app. But there are two great playoff games tonight...

And... It just showed back up now. What's weird is that it saved my sign on info into DirecTV. I would've thought it would have deleted that.

Maybe they're pacing the rollout intentionally. With two important NHL Stanley Cup Playoff games airing at the same time, maybe they're worried about a bunch of new users bringing down the network.

NBA is the same way with gametime. same with MLB and MLS. NFL games are on broadcast TV and from what i read Sunday Ticket has it's own crazy rules
