this has gotten off topic for this thread but..

the way the music industry is now you have a a small handful of artists getting rich and the vast majority making nothing.

the best music is made by people who aren't millionaires.

Actually using garage band you can make ring tunes out of clips, movies, and songs. My favorite is from scarface... for when the boss calls

I just purchased my first ringtone via iTunes. I made a ringtone out of "You talk too much" by RUN DMC. This will be the ringtone for when my wife calls... :D

This is kinda lame!

why?
1- too hard to figure out what songs i already purchased that can be made into ringtones

2- If i already own a cd, ripped it into itunes, i have to PAY??? BS! i would want to make it a ringtone without PAYING!!

Apple, this is the start of making your customers pissed off with you.

Word!!

I understand thier logic on ringtone sales, but i been buying CD's since 1989 and started ripping them in 1999. I been making my own ringtones way B4 itunes and will continue to do so with MY colection!:)

Classic Song! Don't forget to download Whodini's "You Got A Big Mouth":D

That's a good one also. I almost forgot about that one. My wife heard me playing that RUN DMC song and she asked me if that was her new ringtone. I just said "of coarse not." :D

It's not the record labels, a ringtone is a new license that is negotiated with the writer and publisher as well as the recording master's owner. In this day and age, most big name artists control all of the above. I have several artists that I know who will never license their songs. They think it is a lo-fi, crass and commercial way to have their music exploited. (just like use for commercial products on TV) I know artists who will never license for any amount of money to a ringtone or greeting card etc. but give away their licenses to a great cause. It's not about money at all.
I think the big mistake people who are not in the biz seem to assume that the record companies actually have any power at all. It is the artist/writer who pulls the strings and their power is directly related to their popularity. And what makes you think that a artist/writer would allow a record label to negotiate a license on their behalf?
Sure they can license ringtones for personal use but that doesn't make it illegal to make a ringtone out of a song that someone has already purchased.

Off Topic: Personally I hate ringtones that don't loop and most songs don't sound right as ringtones so I've taken a different route and used old NES and SNES game sound files as ringtones. They all loop and most do 2 or 3 times in 30 seconds. People love them because they recognize the game that it's from.

A note on fair use. If you have legally purchased a cd or mp3 you have the right to make a copy for your phone. That is fair use. A previous poster said it would be illegal because you would be playing it in public. Not so. It is not a commercial use. But Apple can not allow this to happen because they are a business and they must get a license to distribute a ringtone.
So when you take your music, cut it yourself, and install it on your phone, it is legal and fair. Just do not make copies for your friends. And only do it from music you have paid for legally.
Exactly.

unfair

don't u think it is a little unfair to pay 99 cents for the whole song and then 99 more cents for 30 sec of the same song??!!!

i would suggest to download a sound editor, and edit the songs yourself...

may not be completely legal, check first, but i think it is, since ur not copying or changing the song, ur just cuttin it... again, check first, but dont pay 1.98! it is unfair!!!

Doesn't work for me at all in my Purchased playlist...when I click on a column to bring up ones I can add, Ringtone is missing. I can add it to iTunes search results but that's it.

Oh well... then again I'm running iTunes 7.4.0 not the latest 7.4.1. Maybe they're doing this to make me update?

Most likely. I have had my first success with the song "Can't Stop" by the Chili Peps. I like it, but I have found a way to create custom ringtones using a Mac with the new iMovie, GarageBand the MakeiPhoneRingtone app, and a bit of time. The work around has probably been found out, but, I'll be back at around 9:30 MDT and I'll post it. It delivers high quality songs BOUGHT FROM iTunes into high quality ringtones.
O.K. I'm back.
Go into iTunes 7.4.1 and find a song that you have downloaded from the store. Take the same song into iMovie 7.0 and make the movie (Using black clips without sound) the length of the sound file. Then go to share> Quicktime> and convert it to AIFF. Then, go to iMovie, open up the file you just saved in iTunes, then convert the song to AAC. Then, put the AAC file into the MakeiPhoneRingtone and convert it. That is how I did it! Good luck!

Even though you can look at it as "paying twice" people need to understand here that Apple is charging less than anyone else selling ringtones especially considering you get the full song WITH the $1.98 you're spending. It's not a great deal, but it's far from horrible. And though I am not a lawyer, it's obvious there are legal ramifications Apple is dealing with as well. To just give us open access to all songs in our libraries I am SURE is not as easy as it sounds. GET REAL PEOPLE!

People need to stop whining and bitching and complaining so much. I don't know about anyone else but it makes me sick. Those crybabies should get this t-shirt:

plus why worry you iphone users can soon buy 100 ringones with you nice "shut up and stop whinging" $100 back from Steve.........;)

but the rest don't have those 99¢ barriers between you and the ringtones .. with the rest either you buy those ridiculously over-priced ringtones or you make your own and and use them at will .. free and easy with need for 3rd party hacks or scripts!
with Apple the ONLY way to the ringtones is thorugh that 99¢ barrier, and my biggest gripe with this absurd limitation that Apple do not offer the 2nd option that EVERY other phone offers (even our lovely Microsoft) you DO NOT have the option to use your own tracks, your music or your own royalty free material, yes you can of hacks or rename files but thats not the question .. the question is of Apple's absurd policy to restrict access to its device ..

It's a sad state of affairs having to pay the same amount again for the right to play a shortened version of the same song. It's not a whining thing it's a principle, and it's by no means specific to Apple.

The music industry rapes its consumers like this, and then wonders why people decide to steal the music instead.

Kudos to Apple for making it more affordable than anyone else, and their marketing skills (you're not "paying for it twice" you're "buying a ringtone at $1.98 and getting the full song free" - lol beautiful spin) but big thumbs down to the RIAA or whoever for making people re-purchase the same song at the full price just to have a segment of it. Surely "playing part of a song you've bought" counts as fair use.

(no idea for a title)

From ASCAP:

"A public performance is one that occurs either in a public place or any place where people gather (other than a small circle of a family or its social acquaintances.)"

So your backyard party is OK. Playing music through your boombox in a crowded train station is not.

Now, if I purchase a song on iTunes (never did) for, what, 1.99 and that thing is 4 minutes long. Thats 50 cents for a minute, so for 30 seconds it would be 25 cents...
Probably not the logic of the industry but would be way better I guess than another buck. In addition, if you own the song already it should be even less...

OK...I'm having a little problem. I thought that I try the new itunes "ringtones" function to see how it works.

Picked a song with a bell next to it, bought the ringtone, ringtone shows up when syncing iphone, disconnect iphone, cannot find ringtone antwhere.

I've tried reseting my iphone...I even tried reseting all of my setting via itunes.

Any ideas?

Never mind, I figured it out.

I clicked the ringtone in my itunes and it wasn't autorized to be played on my computer...I logged in and wow it worked.

Ringtone Volume

I tried out the ringtones feature last night, and after I figured out how everything worked, it did. However, I was sorely disappointed with the volume level that was created in the ringtone.

I spent a few minutes selecting the portion of the song I wanted to use (instrumental portion), and specifically selected portions with high pitched sounds that I should be able to hear just fine when the iPhone rang from within my belt holster. It sounded perfect on my Mac. However, after I created the ringtone, and synched it to my iPhone, I was sorely disappointed to find that it was so soft as to be unusable.

What's disappointing is that Apple clearly knows that ringtones need to be louder to be useful. The default ringtones on the iPhone are clear and loud on the iPhone's tiny speaker, however limited they may otherwise be. Since user created ringtones are uneditable, and there was no option to adjust the volume in the creation of the ringtone anyway, I probably won't be creating any more.

There needs to be a way to try out your ringtone creations on your iPhone before committing your payment, since there's no correlation between how it sounds on your Mac and on your iPhone.

ASCAP has nothing to do with ringtones, they are licensed by the master rights holder, publisher and songwriter. A ringtone is NOT a public performance and neither is a boom box, unless you dance to it and ask for money. ASCAP could care less. The above quote refers to you or your band performing another songwriter's song in public or at a venue, not playing a CD or MP3.

I'm liking the spotlight search feature in iTunes. I just purchased Brooke Fraser's 'Albertine" and the Bell icon for ring tones has shown up for the first time in my iTunes menu.

So few songs . . .

I have looked through this thread pretty thoroughly and am surprised that almost noboby is mentioning how few songs are available as ringtones. Only 10 of the 250 songs I have purchased from iTunes have bell icons next to them. And none of those are of interest to me (ringtone-wise). I figured they'd all be available. I want to use Herb Alpert's "Casino Royale" as a ringtone.

Really not the way it is. Think of Green Day releasing Working Class Hero.
Green Day may want to license the ringtone and their label might, but what if Yoko doesn't? The underlying work is the key!! Writers and Publishers run the music business, which the record business is only a player (and a diminishing player at that) Why do you think Tower went under. CDs are on their way to Vinyl record heaven. Sure, some minor players may still get yanked around, But people who want ringtones want hits not unknowns.
According this piece on Engadget, copyright lawyer Nilay Patel says:

Well, the RIAA wanted to be able to distribute ringtones of its artists without having to pay them big money to do so (surprised?), and it won a decision last year before the Copyright Office saying that ringtones weren't "derivative works," meaning they didn't infringe on the copyright of the songwriter. It's a little more complicated than that, but essentially, if the RIAA hadn't won, ringtones would cost even more, since no one would be able to make them without a license from the songwriter.

This decision is far from final and has no teeth for publisher's regarding digital downloads. We all still license any digital download service. I receive opt in and opt out agreements every week for digital downloads. And we can restrict their use.
