iTunes v. iToner (and hacks)

IMHO iTunes supposed 500,000 available ringtones do not even come close to meshing with my preferences. Having searched on a long list of artists, I came up with only a handfull of ringtone-capable tracks, NONE of which are in my iTunes library.

This makes iToner (or a hack) a no-brainer for me. (And I am an older consumer, neither particularly price-sensitive nor latest-trend-must-have type.)

I don't mind the fees so much as I mind the restrictions on opportunities. I will never have LOTS of ringtones, but I would like to have what I want. iTunes may or may not ever provide that opportunity.

I'm too lazy (and too scared) to hack, but I am not a Mac novice, nor do I feel constrained by Apple's tepid offerings.

I think the these ringtones – maybe the current ringtone-model – are counter-innovative and counter-technology.
With them Apple is actively pursuing a business-model that frustrates possibilities and development.
OK, ringtones are not a big deal + there might be legal reasons + it might be a side-effect of growing as a company.
But this is not the first time that we get the message that Apple is changing.
I think it's time for a new company to stand up and become the next Apple.

I really don't get why Apple gets blamed for all of this. I am 100% certain that the "use" issues regarding songs are completely controlled by the labels and in some cases the artists as well. Here's an interesting story from this mornings news that provides one illustration of just how convoluted the whole issue of "ownership" and "use" really can be.

but the rest don't have those 99¢ barriers between you and the ringtones .. with the rest either you buy those ridiculously over-priced ringtones or you make your own and and use them at will .. free and easy with need for 3rd party hacks or scripts!
with Apple the ONLY way to the ringtones is thorugh that 99¢ barrier, and my biggest gripe with this absurd limitation that Apple do not offer the 2nd option that EVERY other phone offers (even our lovely Microsoft) you DO NOT have the option to use your own tracks, your music or your own royalty free material, yes you can of hacks or rename files but thats not the question .. the question is of Apple's absurd policy to restrict access to its device ..

Not true. I've been using my own songs as ringtones for a week now. Someone posted how to do it earlier in this thread, so I'm not going to post it again. If you don't want to go through this thread looking for it, go to iphonealley.com and look it up.
