All Apple TV needs to match my Roku 3 is

1. Amazon Instant
2. Plex
3. TWC

I will probably hold out for Apple TV 4 which which probably introduce an App store as well as a new remote / gamepad.

Great great news as I'm awaiting my Apple TV 3 as I type.

Can someone please confirm the Plex hack still works after updating ? Thanks

Just to let everyone know. I use a DNS change (playmoTV) on my Apple TV here in the UK to watch Hulu and Netflix (I do pay for these btw). I signed up to WatchESPN using my cousins cable account (with his permission) as he lives in America. Unfortunately even with the DNS change, whilst it signs me in, it won't let me watch content as it sees I'm not in the US. Haven't checked with HBO Go yet as every time I open it the screen just stays black, but will keep you updated.

I wonder if HBO on Apple TV will be accessible for Dutch viewers. I've got HBO from UPC and that comes along with Dutch subtitles as well, handy for when I'm dead tired....

Thank you for this explanation. I was trying to understand why it is such a big deal to be able to watch HBO on your Apple TV, when it is already on your....TV.

If anything, HBO GO on your ATV makes the regular HBO channels irrelevant.

HBO GO in iPhone/iPad has supported Airplay for a while now which worked pretty well but it's nice to have it natively on the box.

Still, no MAX GO? I guess they don't want all that "Skinemax" content available on demand that easily. :D

As someone ready to cut cable, this actually feels like a step towards strengthening the existing system as it's an incentive for me to keep my TWC plan.

I would still get rid of that TWC plan (unless thats your only option)

"ESPN amd HBO are subscritpion only". Well, if I already pay for those channels on Dish, why would I care to have them on my Apple TV?

If you have DirecTV it's more like Don't WatchESPN because the geniuses at ABC believe you don't need to watch ESPN on your iDevice if you don't get Internet from your PayTV provider.

This is a good thing. I was hoping Apple would be the one to break down the subscription barrier. I should be able to watch ESPN online regardless of having a cable subscription. Show me commercials, I don't care, but I'm hoping the internet can return us to the "over the air" days when there was no third party cable provider; just the network and its commercials. For now the networks have made their bed with the cable providers, and the consumers are not happy. Hopefully it changes.

Returning to Over the Air days as I type. My Apple TV 3 should be here any day now. So with that, my Mohu Leaf antenna, & my Obi100 w/ Google Voice, I'll just pay for Internet service saving at least 100/month.

Happy camper here. :D

Yep same here. I am physically in Australia right now but my iTunes account is USA and I am a Verizon Fios customer in the USA. Even though I verified with Verizon for WatchESPN, when I click to watch it says NOT_DOMESTIC.

Has anyone been able to confirm if Comcast is an approved provider on the Apple TV for HBO Go?

Like this poster said, HBO Go with a Comcast login works great on an iPhone and iPad, so I have hope Apple TV will work too.

But as you said, the Roku has hbo go and doesn't allow Comcast. A shame, because my parents need an hbo go box (and so does my second bedroom!).
If it works, I guess I'll be buying two more Apple TV's... :)

I have comcast/Xfinity and I just updated my ATV and registered it on the hbogo website. I'm watching Game of Thrones as we speak.

I also registered and tested Watch ESPN and that is working great as well.

Yeah, what's the theory here?

One can enjoy watching HBO on the same TV as before but with a different remote?

Snazzy!

HBO's business relies on you being subscribed to cable TV.

Cable companies sell and support HBO's product. It's the cable companies who are generating the money, and it's the cable companies who support the product if it breaks down. Allowing customers to purchase HBO GO directly hurts their bottom line and destroys long standing partnerships with cable companies who are the ones funding the network.

It's a shame that HBO Go is cable subscriber only.

Yup, it doesn't make any sense at all.

HBO should allow us to just cut them a check directly for whatever $ a month HBO costs on cable, to give us access to HBO Go. They could probably make millions more if they did this!

Right now, my cost increase to get HBO Go is around $60 + $9, or $70 a month. $60 for the cable subscription, $9 for HBO (or whatever it costs, this is an estimate)

There's no way in hell I'm going to pay that. However, I might be convinced to pay $9 a month just for HBO Go to watch stuff legitimately.

I don't know why HBO is being so thick-headed about this.

I was so excited...

But DirecTV does not support HBOGo in ATV. Bummer. Guess ill have to make do with the airplay. Really stupid

WatchESPN on the Apple TV? Great news for cord cutter sports fans! I'm really excited.
It was annoying that I had to use my iPad or my Mac to stream ESPN to the TV before. Not anymore...

I realise this is unlikely, but HBO Go would be great to have in the UK. I don't have (and don't want) Sky, so not sure how else I would get it.

Sky have exclusivity for the next eight years, so it's not so much "unlikely" as "absolutely not going to happen".

You want HBO programming in the UK, you're going to have to get Sky, break the law, or buy permanent copies on DVD or via iTunes etc.

I get the exact same thing. Can you open HBO Go? Mine just stays on a black screen after I click it.

Oh for goodness' sake, stop adding things we don't all want (and can't all use) and just give us a bloody app store! GRR :p

How is the quality on HBO GO? I don't currently own an Apple TV but will probably get one for HBO GO alone if the quality is at least 720p-ish.
