This is good.

All we need now are HBO, to get off their butt, and realise thry will get better business to un-bundle it from cable providers...

This is the only thing stopping me.

The Game of thrones is the most downloaded TV show in Australia as quoted in the newspapers. Hell, The American ambassador to OZ even begged us in a speech he made NOT to download it.
Since Im an Aussie living in Jpn - I buy the season thru OZ itunes for $33 which I think is a pretty good deal. They dropped the prices from around $50 to $33 for most of their dramas.

BUT Here is where HBO stuffed up big time - They could have announced the arrival of HBO go in OZ on the Apple TV for X amount of dollars. A package costs $47 dollars on foxtel (according to their web guide) so say $30 a month max.

A lot of people would've subscribed to it as people refuse to get foxtel as it isnt worth the money and they hate Mr Murdock (to many reasons to quote)

So HBO should piss off the cable companies that make them a lot of money now on the bet that HBO GO subscriptions might make them more money in the future? Not going to happen until it makes financial sense for HBO to GO it alone (yes, horrible pun intended).

Apparently Charter supports using HBO Go from every device BUT the AppleTV. If you attempt to go to the hbogo.com/activate page and select Apple TV, thats the page you get. I even went to another device page, entered the Apple TV code, and was told "You provider does not support this device."

Thanks. That's weird. I know Charter did not have WatchESPN support until very recently but now they have added it. May be they will have it soon for HBO.

For me I do not even have Cable TV but just charter internet.

"might" is a strong word

fact is, they don't even know... I got hold of Boardwalk empire from "other"" means only because i couldn't get it from HBO...... Doesn't that tell you something ?? You try to be legit, but cable companies force to do it "their way", the same way they are trying to stop.... :p

so be it ....

Bottom Line: If HBO, Netflix, and other companies restrict, then people are gonna get round it..

Its more of an annoyance than anything...

HBO, and others are only "pissing" cable companies off, if they can't face the facts of the internet... :p

The music industry took a long time to open up.... even though they are still restricting,,, at least they're leaning.. slowly, but surly.....

HBO isn't... and if they keep this up, there they're always gonna have a limited audience.

The movie industry business model has evolved over the last century. The broadcast TV business model has evolved over the last 60 years. The cable TV business model (as we know it today) has evolved over the last 30 years. Why do so many people expect companies that have refined decades old business models to be able to turn on a dime? Especially when that turn is into an unproven business model.

HBO's growth has booming over the last few years yet people are mad that they don't throw that all away and risk everything at the drop of a hat to go it alone and turn their business partners into business competition. Makes no sense to me. Things like HBO GO and CW's app are obvious examples of companies testing the waters and if the water is warm they'll keep coming but if it's not they'll smartly hold off.
