Haha. Very funny. No way in the world HBO would charge customers $9 to get this without a cable subscription. They make so much off of fees through cable companies because many people subscribe that don't even watch HBO. Their cable/satellite deals are extremely lucrative because of this. If they ever offer it without a cable/satellite subscription, it will easily cost 3-5 times what they charge those companies.

The alternative is they give their shows away for free. Game of Thrones = most pirated show in history... thus far.

I have a Apple TV hooked up to my tv but I don't use it that much. This isn't going to make me watch it even more.

There is no reason that Amazon VOD isn't available. None. Zero. They have it on the ipad and iphone. They need to open the Apple TV up for christ sakes. Let us put what apps we want like the iphone or ipad. Really, you expect everyone to just use itunes?

The Roku 3 is better than the Apple TV by a wide margin. Allows you to put what apps you want. Even has a remote that has a headphone jack so you don't wake the rest of the family up if you are watching a late night flick or show.

The Apple Tv could be the best streaming box out there and Game console all in one. As long as they just open up the Appstore and let us put what we want for it. They could own microsoft and sony.

For all their marketing genius and being able to see what is around the corner, this is a big fail on their part. :(

I am VERY interested in learning how you did this err404. I have Verizon FiOS Internet only and have absolutely no interest in adding a TV package. I tried to do what you did, but they said I needed a bigger package and a hardware rental.

I may have gotten lucky. I did a self serve allocation of HBO to my plan but it got stuck in the service queue. At that point the ticket was already open. I called customer support to find out why the ticket wasn't be processed and they said the issue was that I was on too low of a plan and did not have a cable box. Then they tried to get me to upgrade. I told them if they could not solve my issue, to cancel the request. I suspect that canceling a request for upgrading service is a black mark for them, because he got very interested in making it happen. It took 3 technicians and almost a hour, but they made it work and I was able to get my Game of Thrones fix.

What people don't understand is that you being subscribed to cable TV is what funds the television shows we all love.

This guy doesnt know as much as he thinks he knows. Paying for cable is such a small amount of it.

Everybody with DirecTV should be tweeting @DirecTVService and @DirecTV about this. Make some noise in public about not having HBOGO and WatchESPN on the AppleTV. Maybe it will get changed.

For real! This is absurd.

FINALLY!!!

But will it support Dolby Digital 5.1??

The only reason I still pirate HBO shows while subscribing to HBO legally is because HBO Go doesn't support 5.1 surround. And I don't want to rent yet another settop box from Verizon just to be able to watch the VOD with their potty user interface!

Has anyone done the download and tried to register their ATV yet?
When I go to the hbogo.com web site to register the Apple TV it doesn't show it as a supported device. Maybe it's just too soon and it hasn't been listed yet but just wondering if anyone else is having this prob. ?

Why? If I'm not very much mistaken, all we got was Sky News - a channel nobody really sits and watches for more than 20 minutes at a time unless its the lobby of a hotel.

Still a glorified iTunes playback device for the UK, that is until you jailbreak it and put XBMC and Plex on it - it becomes a whole lot more useful then.

Agreed! Plus, *everyone* already has normal Sky News on their TV as DTT already, without needing a box at all! Whilst it likes to say it's the *fastest* to break stories, they're often the least accurate at the breaking news, with ITN, Channel 4, and BBC News all beating them on quality. Colour me unimpressed.

As long as HBO is as profitable as they are right now, that is not going to deter them. Until they start losing profits, no way they go to a non-cable subscription.

Actually, Sumner Redstone said CBS couldn't survive on advertising alone today. It is the reason they oppose OTA dvr services. In fact, he even said they might stop broadcasting OTA to ensure all the viewers are paying the fee. I think the last part is just hyperbole, but you never know.

A year ago, I would have been giddy to get Crunchyroll (I've frequently streamed it from my iPad to the Apple TV via AirPlay), but since getting a couple Roku boxes, my use of the Apple TV has dropped to near-zero.

I would like to see Amazon VOD too, but I am not sure it is quite as easy as you make it out to be. My guess is the SDK is not fully baked and Apple does not feel like getting it where it needs to be is a priority. They also need to develop some UI standards which is why Apple is currently involved in every release for the ATV. No offense to ROKU or anyone else, but they really don't care about providing a consistent user experience. Does Apple always deliver a consistent experience? No. Do they always try? Yes.

I have OPTIK TV (Telus), which is essentially one of our cable TV provider here (Canada) and I'm an HBO subscriber. We already have HBO On Demand built into every set top box and also have an iOS app which does the same for HBO and Movie Central.

I'm guessing you guys who subscribe to HBO in the US, your providers don't already give you HBO On Demand with your subscription?

I'm a US cable subscriber, and while we have HBO On Demand, it provides but a fraction of the programming available on HBO GO. Every single episode of just about every HBO series is available on HBO GO, as well as many of the current movies, documentaries, and sports programs.

I think we should be putting the pressure on Apple also

My guess would be Apple would be thrilled to find a content provider not owned by a Cable company that was willing to break away and offer independent subscriptions. Unfortunately, all of the content providers are owned by service providers.

Not much there for UK users. I can already get Sky News on Freeview. This adds nothing new for me. :(

Same here with Uverse. The Uverse on-demand content is just a fraction of what HBO GO has available.

HBO makes money off advertisements?

I assumed he was thinking more of ESPN.
