That sounds ideal to me.

Apple used to market the iPod Touch as a gaming multimedia device. It seems a low-cost non-cellular 5.5" iOS device would be pretty good for that.

Then again, the iPad Mini already sort of hits that criteria, and the last rumor was that it was being discontinued.
That's true but there is still a significant difference, and perhaps they could be categorised together as similar devices, perhaps with only one model each (128GB) to keep costs down, with no option for cellular on either.

My 2010 iPod Touch can't go beyond iOS 6! Yeah, a handy latest generation iPod Touch would be nice... but at $199, I may as well save for an iPad (I just can't put it in my pocket).

I have a (Nov. 2015) Moto X Play that I use for almost all my online activity as well as the rare phone call (!!). I don't like having to use up all my data [Canada's carriers are cellular mafias!] out of the house & use public Wi-Fi when sitting at Tim Hortons/McDonald's makes me feel vulnerable. So my iPod Touch to go to Twitter/Instagram & streaming YouTube; all via Safari. Being on iOS 6, I can't even use the Twitter/Instagram/YouTube apps!

Why not return/swap it?

Same thing actually happened to my son 2+ years ago with an iPod touch. He got a 5th gen as a gift, and 2 months later they refreshed it to the 6th gen (significant jump, A5 to A8). I asked Apple about exchanging it (wasn't expecting them to say yes) and they were happy to do so.

did you have AppleCare on it? and he used the iPT for 2 months as well?

Gimme
- A9 iPod Touch
- A9 iPad Mini

by the way is it me or forwarding calls and sms (real "green" sms) from your main iphone to a second iphone (simless) is a bit of a messy hit-or-miss process? calls kinda works (maybe, sorta), but both imessages and sms need a sim and even then they're activated to THAT sim (not your main number).

By this I mean: an actual A9 ipod touch would be a more capable secondary device than a simless iPhone SE. Because all the forwarding stuff from your main iPhone would just work.

Or I hope for an "iPod Touch mode" for iPhones in iOS12.

They should've killed it off if they weren't going to upgrade it. The ipod touch is in desperate need of upgrading the battery, ram and processor. 1gb of RAM with an a8 processor in 2017 is a joke.

No apple care (which is unfortunate as 1 month after getting the 6th gen he cracked the screen LOL).

But it was at the apple store - and they were quite easy about it. I imagine they don't worry much for a product in which they move relatively little stock.

I purchased an iPT in 2014, and I still use it often for photography. They are good devices. I understand why they ditched the nano (high price, poor sales, separate so format, etc), but the iPT is an easy device to limp along for 3-4 more years.

They should relabel as iPad nano/micro.

how are the sales on these? can't see how people still buy them? i may be in the minority.

We bought one for one of our older nephews a couple of years ago and will be getting another for his brother this Christmas. They live in a very rural setting where there's not really a cellphone signal, and are homeschooled so they stay at home a lot but really the reason we got it is twofold:

1. He told us he wanted a "cellphone," but what he really wanted was an iOS device for games and IP-based calls.
2. No monthly bill for cellphone data service. We paid $199 and we were done.

I agree.

We just used old phones for the young kids to use as 'iPods' when they didn't have phones.

iPhones not connected to a carrier = iPod touch.

They need an 5.5" iPod with 4G. That would be killer! But Apple knows that would take a chunk out of phone sales. And carriers would sh*t.

Isn't that just and iPad mini?

Currently, I don’t need an iPad. But I wish I have an iOS device that is low cost but can run many modern apps.
iPod Touch with 512GB is pretty much the way to go. 128GB is still small to me. Can only put 60GB music into device. I am sure I won’t be able to listen to all of them in a single day but still great to have everything I want at hand.

Nevermind. I see what you are talking about now.

Prepaid Verizon 32GB SE is the same $199 at Best Buy as the Touch now goes for at 32GB. The SE gets a better camera, 4K video, cellular activation when you decide you want it, A9 processor instead of A8.... The only thing the Touch has going for it is vibrant casing colors.

And so is the iPhone SE, which is the same price at 32GB with much better specs. You don't have to activate cellular use for a kid to use it.

There seems to be alot of nastyness towards the IPT on these forums... I actually have an IPT (latest gen) and its a perfect alarm clock/itunes music player and general device for everything from a quick search online or calculator and I dont have to use my iphone battery up

Ive always had a touch lying around my room and always will as long as they keep making them.

For kids. 'Cause you don't give an 8 year old an iPhone.

My observations as a dad: Grades 3-6 is all iPod touch or iPads. Parents don't generally start giving out phones to their kids until 7th or 8th grade, at the earliest.
It's pretty obvious by what can be gleaned from sales of the iPod Touch that there are not THAT many parents buying iPod Touches for their kids. Maybe it's a regional thing, but here in rural Arizona, 3-6 graders have iPhones or android smartphones. It's rare for a kid in that age range to NOT have one.

So if I get the $199 SE at BestBuy, it is prepaid, meaning I do not have to sign a contract, correct? And it doesn't really matter if it's locked to Verizon or not, if I plan on using it as an "iPod" and not using the cellular modem, correct?

Sorry to see the nano go. I have a 16GB in my car and it's perfect for that. Never bought a touch b/c it was overkill for what I needed. But my use is truly niche. I just don't like to hook my iPhone up because then I inevitably forget it when I leave the car. I don't like to use BT because it slams the battery and also sounds pretty bad. Nano was the perfect solution.

I wonder if this means my next car won't recognize my nano anymore. Hmm.

We use one all day long at work. Well 2, one charging and one in use. I was hoping for an update since one's battery is starting to fail. I'll wait to replace it I guess.

Think About that for a minute. Because an iPhone SE is subsidized and discounted through carriers. The iPhone SE is new $399. Where iPod touches are still priced lower. Why would an iPod touch be subsidized?

An iPod touch doesn't need cellular service. You can get a brand new SE for $159 on straight talk. Sure, it's tied to a carrier, but you needn't have it active. It would still work over wifi, just as the iPod Touch would, except it has a newer chipset and more features.
