You mentioned Best Buy being "one third-party retailer" and not widespread, as if only 1 in 5 people have access to Best Buy or something. The heart of all of my posts has and continues to be that you get a much better piece of electronics that does everything an iPod Touch does for the same price and the same amount of storage if you buy a prepaid (of ANY carrier) iPhone SE from Best Buy for $199.99 or less. You and 'ol JPack are the only ones making anything about what I was getting at more difficult than it needs to be. More powerful and feature-packed item for the same price point. You don't have to activate a prepaid iPhone on any network to get the same use out of it as a lesser-spec'ed iPod Touch.

Feel free to continue arguing semantics, point is and was, you were wrong and spreading false information inadvertently about a prepaid iPhone that was locked to Verizon. You keep diverting and yet still fali to own what you said was incorrect. And yes, others did agree with what I and That other forum stated. Furthermore, Best Buy was just one retailer, which isn't applicable to who don't have access was my point. Time to move on from this discussion.

Given this iPod really has more in common with the iPhone and iPad than it does with any other iPod that has ever existed, I think they should rename it to:

iPad Nano

It runs iOS but doesn't have cellular, and does way more than just music, just like all base-model iPads.
Exactly what i've been thinking, but it would be a low cost Plus sized device to make more sense in terms of pricing.

I wonder how much less it costs to build a technologically dated iPod touch vs. an iPhone? How expensive would it be to take the current iPhone, strip out the phone specific technology, and create a truly updated iPod touch that might appeal to parents? That would seem to be the logical market for an iPod touch today, and there are 25 million kids 6-11 years old in the U.S. alone. For parent who aren't buying their children a phone, the only reasonable option is an outdated iPod touch or an Android device. Seems like a lost opportunity to get kids to use Apple products...

Apple today tweaked its iPod touch storage and pricing configurations after discontinuing the iPod nano and iPod shuffle.

ipod_touch_6_lineup-800x312.jpg

Apple's new iPod touch lineup is priced as following in the United States:

o 32GB: $199
o 128GB: $299
o 16GB and 64GB discontinued

Apple's previous iPod touch lineup was priced as following:

o 16GB: $199
o 32GB: $249
o 64GB: $299
o 128GB: $399

The new configurations are currently in stock on Apple's online store in the same colors as previously: Silver, Gold, Space Gray, Pink, Blue, and Red.

Apple last updated the iPod touch in July 2015 with an Apple A8 chip and 8-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera.

hopefully they will do price adjustments (and storage) on the MacBook/Air/Macbook Pro.

Macbooks are not selling well it has be below $999 mark. Best buy has 8Gb/512GB for $1099 for 2016 model. still not sold out.

wish Macbook's storage reflects iPad storage strategy. 128GB SSD is not enough.
Yeah Apple is leading in terms of storage capacity in iOS devices but falling short on Macs. Obviously price (due to higher performance) has something to do with it, but I think it's now time to focus on capacity for a while. All MacBooks should start at 256GB. I would like more at the base price but the problem is that with the large different in flash prices, Apple is hesitant to put more in if the user isn't going to use it. With a hard drive the difference is so low, there was no harm in putting more in.

For kids. 'Cause you don't give an 8 year old an iPhone.

My observations as a dad: Grades 3-6 is all iPod touch or iPads. Parents don't generally start giving out phones to their kids until 7th or 8th grade, at the earliest.

Exactly. But honestly, is an A8 chip going to support IOS much longer? Is it worth shelling out $200? I'm not sold...

Capacity bump is merely a catch up to capacity bumps in iPhone from last year (7 and SE) and iPad this year.

Lack of processor bump and Touch ID are strong indicators that iPod touch is headed for discontinuation in a year or two.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. However, I'm hoping that Tim Cook and company stops their circle jerking long enough to give us an updated "iPod" device with all of the latest tech in an iPhone such as BT, Wi-Fi, Touch ID, A10 processor, etc. Not everyone can or wants to be tied to their cell phone.

To take it even further, they should reintroduce the iPod Classic with click wheel to be a dedicated music player. This would be great for people that travel, want to go for a walk, etc and don't want to be interrupted by notifications, games, texts, etc.

Ya but that's a pretty small market. And if developers already have the latest model they probably aren't buying anymore.

I don't entirely disagree. If anything I think an iPad mini approaching the $200 mark would be a better product for kids and others to get into iOS.

Apple of course knows the sales numbers. Maybe the 199 price point as an iPod to get into Music works well? Who knows..

surely not enough sales to keep the product going tho?

I know.. honestly I can't imagine a lot of these being sold.

The iPad Mini makes more sense as a gaming device for kids and an entry level iOS device. Pare it down to its basic functions and sell it at $199.

Fully agree here.

Not everyone wants to pay lots of money on a plan every month. I have a prepaid phone that cost me $100 for 1000 minutes (last a long time) and I use wifi to connect my Touch.

Except, just make it like an iPad. That way, a customer has the choice to enable it when they want/need it with no penalty.

Frankly 128GB is still too small to make this truly attractive to the one audience that would find this device really useful -- the original iPod die hards who want to carry around their entire music collections off-line. The iPod Classic was 160GB. There should be a 256GB offering which would allow maximum music storage on top of the base iOS system and some essential apps. Heck a 512GB offering and iPod enthusiast would probably grab it up.

Without a bigger screen it doesn't really make sense for much else, not for gaming certainly. There are better devices at a better value. And the SE dropped down in price would likely make a more compelling device for the price, with the latest technology. Hard to imagine this will stick around much longer ...

Dang, just bought one the other week for my son's birthday (tomorrow). a 16gb one.

well, he should be fine anyway just stinks.

Why not return/swap it?

Same thing actually happened to my son 2+ years ago with an iPod touch. He got a 5th gen as a gift, and 2 months later they refreshed it to the 6th gen (significant jump, A5 to A8). I asked Apple about exchanging it (wasn't expecting them to say yes) and they were happy to do so.

Yeah, it's also useful for developers, people who want a low cost iOS device for communication (or even a dedicated homekit/ATV remote), and even Apple use it themselves for certain applications.

I'd buy a 512GB (or more!) iPT with touchID immediately regardless of cost.

Like I said before, it's my main device at home. I use it overall more than my iP6s+.

It's the FORM FACTOR that matters to me.

I need the big screen of the iPhone because it lives on my dash as my Nav and entertainment system. When I'm not driving I want small and light.

They should make an iPod with the below specs:

A9
2GB RAM
4”
4G but no voice
Touch 2.0

128GB for USD 249
512GB for USD 349

>30 hrs usage

Would sell like hot cakes.
If they are going to stick with the form factor and branding, then the changes I would make would just be the A9 and 2GB RAM, Touch ID (1), and maybe color changes. And keep pricing the same. Obviously I would want more than that but it is a somewhat realistic wishlist.

I don't understand why they would cancel the nano and shuffle but keep the touch? I see more use out of super small music player than an ipod touch when everyone owns a smartphone that can do everything a touch can and has always has internet connectivity. I guess maybe for kids? Or maybe just lowering the price to sell remaining stock off before discontinuing.

So they can get more money from the people who buy these, when they buy Apps

What about updating the processors on the ipod touch too?

Also these devices (IPT6) have been faulty since the beginning battery calibration is a complete mess on these devices.

how are the sales on these? can't see how people still buy them? i may be in the minority.
You buy them for kids that don't need a cell phone and therefore don't have to pay a monthly fee. Also, if you are in a place with wifi, you can use it to make FaceTime or other VOIP calls at no charge.

I wish they'd drop "Touch" from the name. There is only one iPod now.

The same could be said for the "i" in all of their devices. Being that it started with the iMac which was to distinguish adding Internet capabilities to the Mac it all seems redundant now. iPhone, iPod, iMac...

Exactly what i've been thinking, but it would be a low cost Plus sized device to make more sense in terms of pricing.

That sounds ideal to me.

Apple used to market the iPod Touch as a gaming multimedia device. It seems a low-cost non-cellular 5.5" iOS device would be pretty good for that.

Then again, the iPad Mini already sort of hits that criteria, and the last rumor was that it was being discontinued.

I use the iphone just for the street.
[doublepost=1501183894][/doublepost]I don't know but with today's news i've the feeling we are getting closer to the end of the ipod touch line up but only Apple knows that for sure, many of us thoght the ipod touch 5 was the end of it and we receive a 6 generation. Hope we get a 7.
