Hello all :)

Couple of days ago I've finally got my XS Max in Space Grey - I had to return the Gold version since it wasn't to my liking. I even got a little friend help me to unbox it:

This is what I saw upon closer look, while iOS update was installing in the background.

What's even more interesting is that Apple Support straight forward admitted, via email that this is a cosmetic defect created during production. Historically they used to deny those kinds of things.

I'm curious:
1)
Do you agree with me that Apple's QC has gotten visibly worse for the last 2-3 years? Personally I've never experienced it pre-macbook-2016 time and pre-iPhone8Plus ever.
2) Has your XS or XS Max arrived spotless?

On a side note, that back is beautiful though:

Whats the issue? The gap between the glass, stainless steel?
2 small cosmetic defects but visible under good lighting. I've added another photo that comprehends it better.

Stainless steel frame also has a defect.

Is it a chip on the edge?? Struggling to see with all the reflections.
Some kind of particle stuck between frame and screen layer, plus frame itself it slightly damaged - legitimately small but looks like a production machine did it.

Did you pay the full price? So you should get the product they always claim to be perfect.

When I bought my iPad Pro I opened 2 packages at the store because they had defects.
My decision is made long time ago, I'm just curious about those 2 aspects I've asked in the main post :)

Ah yes, sorry skipped that, to early :D

1. I think Apple's spotlight in the public gets bigger and bigger and each little scratch gets more attention that it deservers. Machines make also mistakes when they produce stuff, this is fully normal. Any producer of anything has this kind of cases, the problem with Apple is that as soon as there is a small dust cloud on something it gets medial attention as if the the queen died.

2. I picked up the X last year at store and it was fine. But when I bought the iPhone 5 many years ago, I returned two because they had scratches.

Well as long as you got a replacement and are happy that’s great. Was this thread a statement because of something you’d read here btw?
Rather trying to gather others' experiences of purchasing this phone.

And general curiosity for what you think in terms of bad QC. I am observing this since Macbooks Pro 2016 launch - blemishes and faults out of the box etc.

For the outrageous price, should be perfect.

Not quite. Apple manufactures 600,000 iPhones a day, you expect every iPhone to be ‘Perfect’ without cosmetic defects? That’s not possible. What Apple should be known for, is at least acknowledging and standing behind their product and making the situation right for the customer. _No_ tech manufacturer is perfect with their hardware, not even Apple.

Agreed, it's just that 4-5 years ago it used to be single incidents here and there. Now it happens a lot. I guess it comes with the quantity.
Curious about your opinion and others' opinions anyways :)

I have often wondered whether the ‘new’ product sold in the store (or online) is actually new. I know that if you have a device replaced, maybe after one or two months, that the product they replace it with is Refurbished. Apple told me this when one of my phones was replaced.

When a product is massed produced in the millions upon millions, there are going to be manufacturing defects along the way for some models. That doesn't mean that Apple has lowered their standards. It simply shows that man and machine are imperfect. Automobiles, clothing, coins and many other items are affected the same way.

4-5 years ago they would just return it for a new one at the Apple store, no hassle.

now they all make new postings online about the "damaged" iPhone out of the box, and keep asking for others to share their same damaged fotos from years ago to confirm that Apple is loosing quality control.

You should work for a news agency :), they just said " yep damaged will exchange it" that's all, no world news, admitting that world wide all phones are damaged.

stick to reality guys, this is just one of few of milloins delivered, get it exchanged and go on with your life :)
