This is why I’m waiting until December to pick my XS up. They’ll hopefully iron out production issues by then.

Same thing happened when I bought my iPhone 7 around launch. Had some defects such as the screen having an uneven curve, so whenever I applied a screen protector, it wouldn’t fully stick to one side. Also, my 7 had weak Taptic vibration.

I went to Apple a few months later, and they exchanged it for a flawless iPhone 7.

Logical fallacy.

4-5 years ago they would just return it for a new one at the Apple store, no hassle.

now they all make new postings online about the "damaged" iPhone out of the box, and keep asking for others to share their same damaged fotos from years ago to confirm that Apple is loosing quality control.

You should work for a news agency :), they just said " yep damaged will exchange it" that's all, no world news, admitting that world wide all phones are damaged.

stick to reality guys, this is just one of few of milloins delivered, get it exchanged and go on with your life :)
Agreed, no world news, they just informed me that [mine] was damaged during production. That's all. I din't say anywhere that AAPL has admitted to worldwide problem.

Judging on everyone's opinions so far is some of us are more OCD than others :)

Hey that hamster is a beauty!

Well you opening post is very judging, and also doing a poll about it suggest you want to turn it into a "gate" thread, and it's the bane of this forum, and many will hate you for it :)

It's a shame you have to open a topic with poll, to have others tell you how you should feel about the small damage,
instead for you to decide for yourself ;)

And I thought I had OCD.

Seriously, how do you even bother thinking about this "DEFECT"?

Your hamster is perfect though, what a cutie! :)

In answer to your questions:

1. Yes I would return the phone with the scratches/damage as I see it in your pics, unless it would be a big hassle then I would just leave it and get on with it.

2. I have had every single phone since the first iPhone, plus most iPads, MBP’s, two Apple Watches etc. and all have always been pristine. So based on my experience, I don’t see any issues with Apple’s quality control. I don’t recall friends/family/colleagues having any issues ever either.

1) Do you agree with me that Apple's QC has gotten visibly worse for the last 2-3 years? Personally I've never experienced it pre-macbook-2016 time and pre-iPhone8Plus ever.

2) Has your XS or XS Max arrived spotless?

To answer your questions above:

1.) No, I wouldn’t agree. Apple makes tens of millions of new iPhones every year, and the fact that this is your first time receiving a phone with a tiny blemish really should tell you just how rare this is.

Even if a thousand phones had some kind of blemish, that’s still like one hundredth of a percent of all phones produced.

2.) Yes, my XS Max arrived with no cosmetic defects.

And to answer your poll, it depends. If it bothers me enough, I’d certainly take it back for an exchange.

The ratio of iPhone model production vs reported defects seems absurdly small. Blown up on forums everywhere. My precious is damaged when opened, the horror, stuff happens it’s called life. Get it replaced and move on.

But I want attention.

To the OP.

If read read the post correctly and reviewed the pictures correctly, the blob of whatever (technically speaking) is not a cosmetic issue. That is clearly a manufacturing defect which is covered under the 1 year manufactures warranty.

But I am glad you won this round against the giant in covering a defect that occurred in the manufacturing process.

I will say the most impressive manufacturing defect I have seen is a finger print on the screen. The specialist tried everything to remove it.
The customer was hilarious. At first he thought it was the location he needed to place his finger to unlock the phone.
I guess Apple admitted to cosmetic defect when they handed him a brand new in the box phone.

The left ear on your rat looks defective, return it for another.

Hello all :)

Couple of days ago I've finally got my XS Max in Space Grey - I had to return the Gold version since it wasn't to my liking. I even got a little friend help me to unbox it:

Well if that's the impression I'm sorry, and admittedly that thread could have been named better by me.

It's not a gate thread, I really wanted to know what would you (and you and you as well) think/do.

Well it's not about "winning against giant", that would be absurd to think - however I know what you mean.

To be frank Apple support has called it 'cosmetic defect' - their words.

Well to be frank when it comes to phones/PCs/Macs I have a huge OCD.

New phone arrived. Replacement is also not in perfect condition, lots of dust and dirt between steel frame and rest of the phone. I wanted new phone badly but the weird-dusty-finish is also visible at the top right corner of the screen.

I'm returning this one and staying with my 8 Plus.

It took me about 14 phones before I finally found a near perfect one. I had been getting space gray and decided to try my luck with a gold one and got lucky.

I had similar problem with my iphone x, straight out of the box It came with e dent which was really noticeable. I get to the apple store (20 mins after I opened the box ) and they said that the boxes are sealed really good and I have dented my phone...

14 phones that's not for my nerves nor time  Every return is a hassle with chasing TNT delivery men...

I'm also starting to think that most blemishes are visible on Space Grey versions...

Have you checked with Apple to see if you’re ‘flagged’? (And I ask seriously). Another Member was flagged for excessive returns and was not notified by Apple until attempted another return, in which they were denied.

Regardless, what’s interesting what you said in your post, is that it took you ”14 phones to actually find a near perfect one”, which you’re still saying the ‘15th’ phone still isn’t perfect. My thoughts are that if you have 14 defective phones, then maybe iPhone isn’t for you in general. I understand defects can occur with phones and I’m not saying you have not found legitimate issues with your phones, but I have never heard of anyone returning 14 phones.
