Google Maps uses now Gulf of America worldwide, no matter your location … I agree, though, that should be localized based on what your official government calls it…
Google Maps will show "Gulf of Mexico" to users in Mexico and "Gulf of America" to users in the US. All other countries will see both, with "Gulf of Mexico" being the primary name.

It is unfortunately a wrong map information because the internationally agreed to legal name is Gulf of Mexico. Will Apple now willingly use more wrong names just to please the president? This is concerning.
did you read the article?
Google and Apple use data from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) when naming world locations, and GNIS updated its database with the "Gulf of America" name change this week.

Nope, it's 'Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)' in the rest of the world. No biggie. An example from Europe: the city of Liège in Belgium is called Luttich in Germany and Luik in the Dutch speaking parts of the Benelux.

I remember having to change Mt Mckinley in Alaska to Denali when Obama signed an executive order to make the change.... It's at the whim of the President apparently

Yes, I believe the difference is the locals who consider the mountain sacred wanted it changed (BACK) to Denali. It is the key mountain in a park called Denali National Park... not McKinley National Park... but perhaps that should be followed with "yet."

While admitting this is quite possibly the stupidest and most childish thing Trump has ever done, which is saying a lot, the government of the United States did officially (and legally) change the name of the body of water in the database Apple Maps pulls from.

I do encourage everyone to "Report an Issue" and flag that the name is wrong though :) .

Trump supporters will see this as a patriotic win for our country over the Mexican Meance they're so terrified of.

Trump dissenters will see this as a waste of time and a rich man bowing down to kiss the ring.

People who think for themselves will realize this is a stupid, surface level issue that exists only to distract people from the fact that, whether you support Trump or not, we are in a constitutional crisis.

EDIT: Ahhhh, what else should I expect?

This is nothing new , the American political class loves renaming stuff (for example, those bases named after America's Civil War generals)! I think it's silly, but I it's hard fault Apple Maps for going along with the official names.
Yes, changing the name of military bases named after traitors from the 1860s is an awful destruction of tradition that must be reversed, but renaming a body of water that has 400 years of being called the Gulf of Mexico is a-ok, because we must "own the libs"

I would have gone with Gulf of North America, but Gulf of America is ok. I could see getting upset if it was renamed Gulf of the United States, but it’s not. It’s a gulf in the American continent. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I agree with your viewpoint in that it can be referring the continent, and I also like that personally. However, I'd be willing to bet anything that was not the president's thinking when he signed that order. Good thing no one put it in his ear that America can refer to the continent or he would have gone with Gulf of the United States! Went with America because that's what on the red hat.
