A little over the top, but agreed. WWDC is a developer confernce, so Leopard and the Mac Pro. I'd be surprised if he even mentions Merom. Forget about MB, they just came out and Steve won't kill sales during the back to school promo. Geez, he's a genius, not a moron...

Um, Back to school is all the more reason to drop in the Memrom in the MB ASAP..

Ma and Pa looking to buy Jr a laptop and is told by wise ass sales drone at CompUSA that they shouldn't get that MacBook, cause it only has the Core Duo, while this PC has the Core *2* Duo..

If SJ hasn't taken complete leave of his senses, MBP will have the Memrom chips w/ 4MB cache, the MB will get the 2MB cache. ASAP. Now that Apple is using the same chips as Dull, Crapway, etc, they CAN'T sit back and release chips 6 months after they're available... Not if they want to continue to grow share.

Merom*, named after "Merom Lacus, lake in the Hulah Valley of Israel."

probably a dumb question...

I perusing the sunday ads, I notice several non-apple computers advertised as centrino mobile technology intel core duo (or solo) processors. is that the same chip currently being used in mac laptops/mini?

Please, let the new MBP be socketed!

*fingers crossed*

I don't know why you want a socketed MBP. Besides the issues of size, heat, and stability already mentioned, the Merom 2 (due Q1 07 with the Santa Rosa chipset) is a completely different socket and so it will not be possible to upgrade the current chip except for the same chip at a different speed and I doubt the cost will be worth the upgrade.

I don't think the drones at CompUsa know. You give them too much credit.

Before you get bashed, becuase you will, I will tell you what everyone else will tell you

First off: Buy when you need it. Do you need a computer now? No? Then wait until you need it. I myself am not heading out to school till late september so I have no reason for one till then. I am hoping that that will be enough time for Merom to come out.

Second: Santa Rosa is supposed to be early 2007 I thought I heard. My guess is Marchish or sometime around then, but that is a completely wild guess from trying to remember past posts. I doubt Apple will go to a new enclosure. More likely just enhance it, i.e. better screen/thinner/magnetic latch... or whatever (just guesses). If anything my guess is that 2007 would be the earliest we'd ever see a redisgn.

But welcome from the dark side of the moon my friend. That sucks there are no Macs there, here in Texas there are alot of Macs but no one cares to talk with me about them, so Macrumors is my only refuge.

Goodluck.

P.S. I would wait for Santa Rosa if you could. That will add 800 FSB over the current 677, and hopefully should incorporate the new Wireless N technology; let alone the things apple will also add to it by then.

One thing you will find on here is that all is speculation and no one but Apple knows whats acctually gonna happen, everything said above is just speculation and guesses.

i dunno. but i have a feeling we may not be waiting too long.

the competitor models are coming soon. so...

bet it ships in volume soon.

that said i don't believe they wanted to do it same week as the wwdc.

so.... hope it's next week

I don't mind if someone just post up some rumours of it coming next week,.. even if it's fake.
it'll at least have me expecting something...

it's been too quiet after wwdc... no news whatsoever on MB and MBP

Mac Book Pro this Tuesday!!!!!!!1111oneoneone. 😀

Yes, I am in the same boat. Once they update the 15" I'm grabbing one.

I don't think Apple is going to announce until they can ship them and they can't ship them for about another two weeks.

I will be very happy if the introduction of the 2.33 Core2 Duo processor in the MacBook Pro results in a price drop in the existing Core Duo models.

I don't need to have the latest and greatest by any stretch, but I do badly want a MacBook Pro, and right now the retail prices are just a little too high for me to get one for myself. I'd be more than happy if a new tier model was added with the new processor and the existing models lowered in price..

Unfortunately, you are most likely correct in your thinking... the challenge for me will be trying to place an order within the 14 day return window to capture the announcement without getting screwed...

End of the iMac?

hi folks, i have combined some interesting things:

1. the mac pro is explicitly advertised as an workstation (class-computer)
2. the imac reaches the end of its (3 year) product-lifecycle
3. since january, apple is in direct competiton with dell and hp (and none of them sells AIOs, because the market for that is too small), and apple rolled out computers which are quiet competitive
4. the mac mini (over here in germany) is selling FAR better than the imac (a good indicator for that is the ebay-listing, i watched it for a couple of months)

in short: i think the imac will end up as an education machine like its pre-predessor and apple will begin to sell just a desktop between the mini and pro + an affordable display like the one from BENQ where the mini or xMac will perfectly fit in.

good?

I don't think completely removing their flagship, all-in-one machine is something Apple would entertain for the time being. Also, since the G3 didn't last 3 years, but closer to 5 and the G4, two and a half, I can't see the G5-Core Duo design being replaced just because it has been three years. I can however see a slight redesign and introduction of the black model.

I am one of the biggest believers around here there will be a headless iMac or something of a similar price with higher spec, (or preferably a standard model starting at lower than iMac prices with same spec and going up beyond the iMac in price, with higher spec, but stopping short of encroaching Mac Pro sales). I do however believe and want the iMac to remain. It is the last real throwback to the original Macintosh 128k, with all-in-one, handled design.

IMO, no way.

1. Your point? The PowerMac/Mac Pro has always been marketed as best-available hardware for professionals. With the Xeons, Apple finally has a chip worthy of calling the machines "workstations."

2. The all-in-one design has been around for 22 years. It's an important part of Apple's thinking. It's not going away anytime soon.

3. HP, Dell, etc. don't sell all-in-one's because a) they don't know how to design one that's actually attractive for buyers and b) they'd have to charge more. BTW, Dell does make an all-in-one (XPS M2010), as do others like Sony.

4. Umm, no. Check out Amazon and the online Apple store. The iMac is the best-selling desktop, as it always has been. Plus, the iMac has much higher margins than the Mini which is reason enough to keep it around.

I do agree that there is space in the market for Apple to introduce a Conroe-powered, media-oriented desktop model that's not an all-in-one. The Mini is OK for an entry model but it's inherently limited given it's tiny footprint. My guess is that Apple's priority, hardware-wise, has been in migrating to Intel. Now that the transition is complete, you'll see some new products join the lineup.

i wonder if demand will be higher for the updated MBP than the original coreduo mbp was back in january. EVERYONE is waiting to pick one up ASAP

i know the morning i wake up and see them on the online apple store, im calling my local store and reserving one
