Apple is spending billions to develop content across several media. Perhaps they intend to use some of those in-house resources for marketing/ad content as well?

Wow...I mean wow...the callousness and inhumanity on display in this post is staggering.

Setting aside that no one, and I mean NO ONE deserves to starve based on their skill level at a particular task, you do realize that finding a job in America (and other countries) is not based solely on talent/merit right? That numerous other factors are at play?

Wow...
Wow... that’s a LOT of wow!!!!

Since you apparently have never held a job or met anyone that has- let me explain it to you!

If you have a job in advertising at one of the top firms in America, that Apple uses- you are likely making above poverty level.
If you have children you probably have thought to set aside more than like fifteen cents, you know, if starvation was a concern of yours. Further, in the case of layoffs- there’s this thing called “drawing unemployment”; its a program set up so children don’t starve to death while their parents seek new work!
The notion that any of the 50 graphic designers that got laid off actually now have children that are starving is absolutely ludicrous!!! Get real. There are actual poor in this country. Starvation is REAL. You know who’s starving? Homeless vets, abused/neglected children, etc.
You know who is NOT starving??
The children of recently laid off well-paid graphic designers.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so think of me what you will.
I personally find your attitude VERY callous to those that are actually starving... to think it’s cute using that word to describe those infinitely luckier than them, that are NOT experiencing that whatsoever, and never will.
I’d equate it to the same offensiveness level as casually saying to rape victims, that you got “raped” too, by being accidentally overcharged $2 on your last fast food order.

My point was DEFINITELY not that some children should starve or whatever bizarre way you interpreted it- it’s that there is ZILCH chance of starvation being a result of these layoffs, & that all that type of talk is over the top, seeking attention, shock & awe exaggeration.

Wonder why Apple doesn’t just buy these guys if they supposedly like them so much

Nobody who worked for an Apple-exclusive ad agency is going to starve or not find another job, relax.
But any juniors or middleweight creative won’t be on salaries that will make them immune from such an event like this. Even higher up individuals could feel the pinch depending on their circumstance.

Seems like it’s their (the companies) fault. They’ve seen several companies fail over the years because of being too dependent on Apple. I’d be hesitant to work at a firm that only has one customer, they can pull the rug at any time.

Poor workers. We often forget they’re also people... people with families, people with kids. Now they’re going to starve because Apple cut them off. I hope they find new work soon, because I really liked all their recent ads, especially their iPhone X ads back in 2017.

it’s very unfortunate.

getting made redundant does have the unfortunate side effect of starving to death.

Between salary and benefits they just saved $10 million in next fiscal year. Someone in management gonna get a nice Christmas bonus.

Maybe they can all go work for Sir Jony's new company. Apple's supposedly going to be his only client, so those laid-off 50 employees will surely find themselves right at home, right back with Sir Jony and his obsessiveness with "maker it thiner, thinner... no, THINNER, I say!" (Meanwhile, Jony drives off in his 250,000 ton Maybach to his 3,405,000 square foot mansion in ...oh.... I forget if it's in California or England.) /s

"Staff cuts were made in multiple divisions, but many of the employees who were let go worked in the strategy division that helped Apple create ads for its newest products. "

Oh ... so will this will crappier ads?

That can be said with most companies nowadays. Contract workers are quite common. Less cost for the company as well.
Yep, that is the current business model. The so called "gig economy". I can see why companies do it but it has a knock-on negative impact on the economy. The people with no employment guarantees are less likely to commit (or even qualify in some cases) to big ticket purchases like houses and cars.

Yup. But nobody seems to be complaining, and the tech community seems to be all in for this “gig economy.”

Bit of a daft business model to be so heavily invested in getting business from one other company that on a whim might stop giving you work(far worse a fate than ending your contract).

Comments sections are a great reminder of how awful the average person is. Regardless of their résumés and salaries, regardless of how commonplace it is, 50 people lost their jobs before the holidays because their company short-sightedly put all of its eggs in one basket. My sympathy is with them.

You need to put a sarcasm tag on your response. Otherwise it seems a contrived troll. Those laid off employees will starve? Really? And it’s all Apple’s fault? Really? Can we sympathize with those who lost their jobs? Absolutely, but people lose their jobs every day in every walk of life. There is no such thing as a job for life. The economy changes, technology changes, businesses fail for varying reasons and people lose their jobs. What would you do if you owned a business that lost a major client and your were faced with closing down and letting all of your employees go or laying off just enough to keep going? Unless you’ve been in that predicament you have no idea how hard it is to make that decision.

Those laid off employees will likely find jobs in the advertising business somewhere else, and quickly.

Can't say I'm surprised; I had a lot more hope for this The Machinist sequal.
