Apple in the doghouse

Not exactly an advert, but I am also amused by the phrase on the apple homepage "What's an Intel processor doing in a Mac? A lot more than it's ever done in a PC." Intel aren't really worried by this negative marketing by Apple either.

>>> It seems there are a few Intel Execs that disagree with you...and they have done so publicly. Blows my mind...within the FIRST WEEK of their public partnership and Apple (Jobs) has already pissed Intel off. Just amazing....

My wife-to-be does the same thing when I highlight a song track on TV as coming from a previous iPod commercial. We havent had any Apple/Intel ads down here yet :(

She actually mentioned to me about what computer I was going to buy when recently watching an ad on TV for a Dell PC until I gave her a weird look. So she asked me when do Apple have sales? I had to tell her that they are the only computer company that don't have computer sales - unless they are selling the old line at a reduced price to make way for the updated model. She was a bit shocked at how much I said I would be paying for a new G5 iMac though ;)
For the past few years, Apple has had sales the Day After Thanksgiving (aka: Black Friday).

Yeah I've been reading the thread but I agree, I still dont get why Windowuser et al are aggravated by the ad. Its obvious, Apple are not in it for plain market share, they want to differentiate from other vendors now that in basic hardware terms they are on the same page. If that means slagging off the others then so be it...it's the same as the 1984 ad.

And yes, I am an intellectual snob. Sue me.

what a lame advertisement, just goes to show the stuck up mac following that dissed intel forever and now is all about them. I don't like the theme either, not very original IMO. Maybe something less flame-worthy?

I haven't seen a Mac fan dis intel in years. And when they were dissing, it was the brief periods of time when intel was behind.

Read the quotes. Don't read the headlines. No one at intel said they were mad at all. They said:

(not quotes, sorry)
- They didn't know about the words the ad would use
- They wouldn't characterize their customers as dull

Nothing in either of those two sentences suggests that they are angry.

perfect. this is exactly what apple needed. no pushy switcher ads, just straight forward iMac CoreDuo image pushing via television and internet. gogogo 5%

Why does Apple pay for advertising?

It's apparent that everyone here at MR knows better than the people who're getting paid to do this.

Apple doesn't want you to remember OS X. Apple doesn't want you to remember iPhoto, .mac, or an iMac.

This is targeted to Windows users who will remember "Intel, Mac."

Period.

Doesn't to me. What designer would chop a tiny bit of the left of the Apple logo off? I could do it better than that. I would think it would say "Apple", not "Mac" but that's not really true I guess.

They want to create brand awareness for the Mac. I like it. If Apple keeps advertising going all year, I think it would help sales.

What they're adds need to do is focus on the OS. To me, the biggest selling points of the Mac is the OS and these adds need to show people sitting @ their computer using Spotlight, iPhoto, Exposé, Dashboard fast User Switching, iMovie, iDVD,...you get the picture.

Was anyone else disappointed that Jobs didn't preview Leopard? That was the number one thing I wanted to see. :(

Not really, as Steve clearly stated he would preview Leopard at the WWDC, and there were no rumors that it would be otherwise.

To the ads: You know, here in Gemany, I would say, Apple is suffering a bit from a stuck-up, arrogant image. When my buddies (PC-users) read the "Was macht ein Intel in einem Mac? Viel mehr als in einem PC!" (What's an Intel doing inside...), they gave me that "typical Apple" look. It definately has a lot to do with the whole "G5 is fastest PC" fiasco, when a number of acclaimed computer magazines criticized Apple for misleading benchmarks, and the Schadenfreude later on, when the G5 was trailing behind.

Therefore, for Germany I would recommend Apple to stick with facts rather than dissing PCs again. It just doesn't seem to work with Germans.

That's true. The quotes were;
"Never would we characterize our customers that way"
"It's probably a good thing that we didn't see them earlier"
"We certainly hope that this innovation engine kind of picks up and that you do see the beige box makers going, 'You know, maybe we could do something that looks and feels like that.' That would be a good thing, I think, from our perspective."Link

The last one makes me think that Intel is actually a little happy to see this commercial. Let's be honest, if Intel really didn't like it, they wouldn't let Apple run it. Right now, Intel wants to stay friends with everyone; they make Apple happy by letting them run their commercial, and they keep their other customers happy by saying "we don't entirely agree with it, so don't blame us."

You need to give the Apple marketing department way more credit. After all, some of the worlds most famous commercials came from them (1984).
These people know what they are doing. This commercial is just building hype, that's all. Apple does not want windows users to switch, yet. Apple is in the middle of a big transition, and there are going to be problems. Apple doesn't want new users to be subjected to that.
I think the Apple marketing team knows exactly what they are doing.

but see, i have a problem with commercials like the one that was posted here, about the intel chips.. to the average joe, what does that mean? Nothing, they need to explain to the basic user that there is an alternative, and that alternative can do everything that windows can do and thensome, without the struggle, and need to shatter their old image.

This is perfect for the average joe. For the last decade EVERY SINGLE ADVERT for PCs and PC shops has displayed the Intel logo with the plinky plonky jingle. Every one of them. And then when they've gone brainwashed into the shop the idiot sales person has reminded them of the fact the Mac doesn't have the plinky plonky noise and logo with it so therefore it's not as good and not what they need. This should go some way to addressing that attitude.

Eric, I think you misinterpreted my post. I agree with you wholeheartedly. The majority on here likes to play armchair quarterback while Apple has hired EXPERTS to do the studies. I think the people getting paid for the job know exactly what they are doing. They are leaving the thought of "Intel and Mac together" in the viewer's mind.

I think Intel does really like it inside - they're probably bored of dealing with the same old companies and enjoy the challenge of working with Apple..

If they really hated the ad, they could have it pulled. And besides, so what if HP or dell don't like it..what are they gonna say? "Hey, Intel..we didn't like that ad so we're gonna stop using you and use AMD instead" - hmm..I don't think so

i dont understand why apple doesnt advertise their computers.. they shud explain in the commercials that windows cant get viruses, and theres an alternative to everything on windows.. they need to shatter the perception that ignorant windows users have, and i think more people wud switch.. that is the biggest things i hear other friends say when i tell them how good macs are.. they usually say.. macs suck.. they are so slow.. nothing is good for them... but i thought you cant watch movies on macs... stuff like that..

Do you remember the "Switch" campaign?... apple.com/switch

ellen-feiss.gif

yeah...

Edit: I saw the new Apple/Intel commercial on TV last night during 24... they had Keifer Sutherland narrating it... is that how the original one was from MWSF?

I like the banner ads. They took the best frame of the commercial (the slight smile of approval) and created the banners. That little smile I feel is the most memorable and powerful part of the intel commercial.

You all must remember this is an informational campaign not a campaign to sell the product. It is targeted towards us and other IT, technical, gadget related people, who are curios to learn more about the transition to intel.

I feel it is effective. just my 2 cents.

Apple does not get it to me.
This sounds, but no video. And anerror is popping up
about a component not avail on Apple server.

What a message. Pretty dull.

I disagree..

Paul Otelinni (sp??) seems to be getting a kick out of this whole Apple is the new kid on the block scene..

He's not gonna lose customers. With the exception of Dell..Who is going to be switching to AMD in 6 months..;)

Oooooh, is this official or still speculation? Good move on Dell's part if so! AMD has had the leading chips in the desktop market for a while now as far as performance goes....and price :)
