dammit!! i ordered my 17' mbp over 15' mbp on sunday just for the matte screen and now they offer it on the 15'

More options are always a good thing. Some people have never given up wanting the matte screens back. Glad to hear they'll be able to get what they want now.

Which costs more to produce, matte screens or glossy?

I wonder, head to head, what will be the buying public's choice between matte and glossy?

Will Apple keep track of it and let us know? If glossy sales take a back seat to matte sales, will Apple ditch the glossy for sake of the matte and ditch the $$$ the up charge fee that used to not be there?

Will matte find it's way back in other substantial products (iMac, please, please, please)! :apple:

Very, very unlikely. Put a glossy and matte screen in front of your average Apple Store browser and they're gonna go with the pretty glossy one. While I'd like to see the option extended to everything (even if I prefer glossy myself) I don't see it happening. Note that, thus far, "Pro" products are the only ones getting it.

this is nice for those who like matte.

laptops can easily get high glare with glass panels. Matte panels still show glare but such a diffused glare that people overlook it.

Better late than never, I guess.

Whoever had the bright idea to only supply glossy displays really needs to be shot for being an idiot. By all means provide the option of a glossy display (apparently some people like them) but don't ignore the views of the professionals who depend on these computers.

Whiners? For some of us the glassy was unworkable. We never made you adopt matte, each has its pros and cons for different audiences, but for some of us it was a serious issue. I'm such an Apple fan, but the glassy thing was such a problem, I even was considering a PC so as to get a matte. Finally, we have the OPTION.

Why don't you respect the needs of others and recognize that different people have different requirements.

Dude, you dare question the wisdom of Apple and Mr. Jobs!? HERETIC! Didn't you know that if you own a Mac you're supposed to tow the party line? Come on now, Apple never makes mistakes. It just changes its mind. Get with the program! (For those lacking a sarcasm detector that was, indeed, sarcasm.)

Really guys..?

I don't like matte at all, but even if you were getting the BASE BONED DOWN $1699 MacBook Pro (Stock, nothing changed), the matte fee would be $50. You're spending $1700+Tax (Not including AppleCare) on a laptop, and you're complaining about 1/34th of the price?

*$%&$#%$*!

I want to be excited about this but man how I do wish it had simply been offered from the beginning!!! I have agonized over switching from a 17" to a 15" mbpro for years because of the lack of the glossy screen. I finally decided to do it about 2 weeks ago and bought a new 15" with the glossy. And now they release it with the matte!!! Time for an exchange. What a pain.

At least in the end Ill end up with what I have wanted for along time.

Thanks Apple...I think.

It is a big deal when it is only available as a BTO. The millions of people walking into Apple retail stores cannot walk out with a boxed laptop with a matte screen.

Which sucks too. After buying my Unibody Pro online, I'll never do it again. I upgraded the RAM. It was on an educational discount and I was surprised at how reasonable the cost was. I figured, "Eh, it's not much more expensive and I don't have to take apart my brand new machine."

Well... one of the fans had an issue and made a TON of noise. If I'd had a "standard" model I could have walked it right into the Apple Store and exchanged it. Instead, I had to ship it back and wait for a new one to be shipped from China.

It wouldn't have been so bad except I'd sold my old Macbook to a friend the day after I got the new one and didn't notice the fan problem until a day later.

Apple knows how to earn money.

Get the Firewire off and call the laptop as Macbook. Then after 1 year put the Firewire back call it Macbook Pro the 13".

Discontinue Matte screen and list your reasoning. Then launch it back with 50 dollars extra cost.

Still I believe it is a good step for people who would like to have matte screen .

I wouldn't worry, you might have saved some money but trust me the 17" screen resolution and the better battery are well worth it. Plus the portability is almost the same if you look at dimensions and weight. I can fit my 17" antiglare MBP into most 15.4" laptop bags.

PS: You and I have had this debate before, and I refuse to get into it again. Search for the thread where we discussed this already if you want to start another argument.
Yes, and your arguments are just as weak now as they were last time, because they come from an apologist point of view. You don't care about right and wrong in this matter, your priority is to defend Apple no matter how far fetched the arguments are.

The problem with your argument is that Apple already have a machine out there with a higher PPI (133) than the 15" would have (129), so if such a high resolution is undesirable/unpopular, you must think Apple are idiots for offering the 17" with 1920x1200.

Apple is really pushing it with this one.

First they remove the matte version and introduce glossy screens.
Now they put it back and want $50 for what essentially should be there in the first place.

Why not do the same trick and remove Firewire again? How about that remote? Maybe the superdrive as well.

They are slowly trying to piss everyone off.

I need my screen replaced on my MBP, so if I order now then I can have a matte screen instead?

(Yes this is probably a stupid question but I just want clarification)

The fact that these kinds of things happen relatively frequently with Apple just shows how amateurish they can be. If they had done any kind of resarch on this before they introduced the glass/mirror screens, they would have found out that a lot of people don't like it. I didn't think there would ever be another matte option for the 15" and so I went ahead anyway and bought a glossy one. Now Apple has changed their direction again and I'm mad. It's one thing to make improvements, but it's really poor business to first remove something and then put it back in the next revision. Apple needs to be more consistent and that involves doing some thinking and research BEFORE making moves like this.

Whatever....

Thank You Apple!!!!

I have a SR 15" MacBook Pro with the Matte screen and I love it. Since they have added back the Matte option and FW, I would definitely consider buying another 15 MBP when the time comes.:D
