So will we get "macBook" and "macPro" and "macMini" now?

I kinda like that. I know Apple don't do simplification, but I'd love them to just tidy up all the OS and product names and the 'i' moniker is becoming a bit irrelevant.
I want:

macOS
tvOS
watchOS

and...

phoneOS
padOS

iOS is getting stretched over two increasingly different devices (with increasingly different use classes).

2017's supposed game changing 10th anniversary iPhone should just be called Phone, or maybe phoneAir and phonePro. I dunno. I thought that sounded simpler, but now it just sounds stupid...

But yeah, definitely different OS for iPhone and iPad.

As I see it there are two major posibilities about this.
1. Someone in PR or something, just mistypes it for whatever reason.
2. They are actually going to change the name soon.

My money is on the first.

The little "m" works for me because it's consistent with the other naming conventions. Sure, it looks weird today, but we'll eventually get used to it. It's like when they changed the name from Mac OS X to just OS X. At least the word "mac" is back in the name now.
I never got used to OS X.
I typically will refer to OS X as OS X unless the version was still called Mac OS X (e.g. Tiger, Snow Leo, ...), but I never got used to it.

It sounds so undefined. Like calling a car "Car 2" or something.

When talking to non-techies I will usually just say "the Mac operating system" (operating system in my language though) or just "Mac OS X".
As soon as I say Mac, even non-techies know what the **** I'm actually vaguely talking about.

Because, you know... Apple doesn't really run a lot of Mac ads here in Germany, so for the non-techie, the term "OS X" is meaningless most of the time.

Great naming decision back then, oh well...

I have a hard time believing that this is just a slip-up.
This looks a lot like testing the waters for the name/getting everyone used to the thought of a "macOS" so that any reservations that may be temporary are gone by the time the change is officially announced.
You'd be surprised how staged everything at Apple is.

Feck! Call it Tim's Magical Pipeline OS for all I care.

Just make it WORK!

On another note, if they can't go a day without having these kinda slip-ups I'm not confident they will. o_O

Its time to go to macOS 11. Once you get into version nimbers like 10.12 it gets harder for people to remember.

I dont know why people think it needs to be a major overhaul. Mac OS 8.6 to Mac OS 9 was not a huge rewrite or anything. It was mostly about adding support for the OS X transition with Carbon. Not a lot of changed.

It's always been OS "ex" to me even though it is supposed to be pronounced "ten". I'm looking forward "macOS" again.

I’m pretty sure that there are be people who will think that macOS is pronounced ‘mac-os’. Who could blame them with this confusing capitalisation. :p

I think Apple will copy Microsoft and do away with all names and number schemes for its OSes. No more OS X 10.11.4 or El Capitan. Just macOS. Simple.

So retro

All in all, I'm ok with the re-branding, though I'm curious to know what will the next version actually entail. With annual upgrades, its rather difficult to have major features that are fairly bug free. There seems to be a consistent theme about Apple rollout out a new version of OS X (now Mac OS) and it being fairly buggy. People are still complaining about El Cap and its been almost a year later.

and would play in with what would be a name change based on what has been rumored previously.

I thought Apple just wanted developers to know this was a mistake personally.

I wish i could be like this.... rumor stuff ......... make mistake based on a wording in a previous rumor then get my 5 minutes in the spotlight...

So easy..

I'm starting to really crack up here...... when there must be a debate over with is upper and lowercase lettering since we must be technically correct.... I thought only Phil cared about that.

You'd have thought if they were going to change it, then changing it when Mavericks came out would have made sense - a move away from the cats and OSX.

Apple Again References 'MacOS', This Time on Developer Website

Eh, Macrumors, it's not MacOS but macOS ... with small "m".
[doublepost=1465477638][/doublepost]And BTW: this time we will get simply macOS 12 ... not any fancy mountain or cat name.

I think SJ said OS X naming was for a decade or more. It's been all of that.

Also, who really cares what it's named?

Please let them drop these strange names (for non US) as well. El Capitan, Yosemity and Mavericks. The cat names were fine, but anyways, the other OS's don't have it.

But now iOS makes no sense anymore...

Why? it is for "i"devices like the iPad and iPhone....sounds good to me.
