I honestly don't care what they do with the name, but I agree that they need to be consistent on the names of their products. Personally, I think macOS is kinda weak, but it does work with tvOS and iOS. Maybe something with 'a' (Apple) in it? Like aMac, aWatch, aTV, aMobile. I dunno.

Like I said, I don't really care what they do, as long as they start doing SOMETHING new with the OS. There really haven't been any significant changes or innovations in the software since Steve Jobs led the company.

Jobs = innovation & performance; Cook = style & looks. IMO that's just what I see from Apple these days.

I never did get why Mac OS went on for years with the major version being 10, yet iOS changed major version every year. This year both major versions will be 10! Maybe it'll be Mac OS X and iOSX!

I have a bad feeling about WWDC this year.

Almost every single news or rumour to come from Apple in the past year has been bad. The latest include app subscriptions and ads in the App Store. No thanks; I hate subscriptions with a vengeance and the same with ads.

The end of iTunes downloads? Two rumours suggests there's a fire. I'd use a mix of Amazon and CDs if iTunes shut down.

The whole approach Apple is taking under Cook is encouraging me to look at alternatives to Apple and technology in general. I have fallen out of love with the tech world. It is obsessed with ripping people off with IAPs and subscriptions, and there is nothing exciting anymore. Everything is static. Music has died; culture has died; hardware and software have atrophied. The world is running madly and going nowhere.

I've be nen reading up on Quantum Mechanics myself. It's a lot more interesting than technology. I still keep my tech knowledge up to date but astronomy has been my second big area of interest.

Its time to go to macOS 11. Once you get into version nimbers like 10.12 it gets harder for people to remember.

I dont know why people think it needs to be a major overhaul. Mac OS 8.6 to Mac OS 9 was not a huge rewrite or anything. It was mostly about adding support for the OS X transition with Carbon. Not a lot of changed.

Well, even though Steve had returned to Apple, I still think of anything pre-OS X as the old Apple. It was pre-iPod. They made big changes in a few years, and not much was done the same after that. For me, if it's not something major, it begs the question: Why now? Why go to 10.11 and then make a major version number change over some minor updates? I mean, I guess I get what you're saying about version numbers. I'm fairly involved in the Apple and Mac communities and keep up with the latest info, and even I still forget what the current version number is—especially with the naming emphasis on California landmarks. But does Apple really care if people remember what is the current version number of OS X? You'd at least think they'd wait until they could align iOS 11 and macOS 11 and tvOS 11 and just increment the major version yearly across multiple platforms. But I guess watchOS would still be the odd one out at version 4 by then.

I think Apple will copy Microsoft and do away with all names and number schemes for its OSes. No more OS X 10.11.4 or El Capitan. Just macOS. Simple.

And unworkable. The version is definitely going to stay. The question just is, whether Apple will openly market the version number again, so that users know that there is something new.

So will we get "macBook" and "macPro" and "macMini" now?
Yeah, just like we have the Apple watch, Apple watch Sport and the Apple tv right now.

Of course it's not going to look like that! You guys have gone off the deep end. Product names and OS names aren't mutually exclusive.

Serioulsy? Still people haven't got a clue about the numberingconventions for the OS?
I know that version numbers aren't decimals. I just wished Apple would've done a major update, from OS X to a new naming scheme.

I just now ran across this thread, so I haven't had time to read it all. This may have already been mentioned, but there are other references to macOS, MacOS, Mac OS, or other variations on Apple's site:

https://support.apple.com/manuals/macos

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203172
"Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired."

https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/4138

As long as it works, I don't care what they call it!

In fact it's so similar that iOS apps run directly on OS X with just a bit of additional framework support provided by the iPhone Simulator.

I suppose they're rightly keeping a firewall still between cursor-based and touch-based interfaces, which makes sense, but damn, it sure would be convenient to be able to run at least some iOS apps on OS X.

Anyone remember this one?

OS 8 was exciting. Was really really cool (compared to OS 7).

I don't care what it is called just please don't mess it up.

It is sad to say, but for the last few releases of OS X, I am more worried about what Apple will take away or change in a way that interferes with my workflow than I am excited about new features.

Change is not always bad, but it can be bad when change involves simply making sure that a mac works seamlessly for iPhone users (i don't own an iPhone and have zero intentions of ever owning an iPhone). That isn't to say I haven't enjoyed some updates. I loved what they did to Safari with the big overhaul. I like the new spotlight a lot. But they keep trying to move macs to the walled garden approach with things like limiting features for apps that don't come from the Mac app store and SIP so users can't modify their computers the way they want to. Hiding the library by default (being able to easily access program files in the library was one of the reasons I switched to OS X). So far none of the changes has been irreversible but I am getting scared.

So my biggest hope for MacOS is please don't mess things up. I don't want weird security features that make it harder for me to manage my computer (TouchID + encryption). I don't want Siri so please make it easy to completely ignore/disable. Even though I just bought an Apple pencil (and love it) I don't really want to be able to write on the trackpad, especially if that huge pad makes typing more difficult.

I would really love for an end to yearly OS X/macOS refreshes. 2 years with monthly stability/security updates is much better.

"Reference" is not a verb.

It can be used as a verb:

reference |ˈrɛf(ə)r(ə)ns|
verb [with obj.]
1. provide (a book or article) with citations of sources of information: each chapter is referenced, citing literature up to 1990.

2. mention or refer to: the media referenced our association in almost 40 articles.

I guess if Apple changes the name, then they can expect another 5 years to get the bugs out. Works for them, not so much for us.

Good, can we pretty please have serverOS?
Man how I wish Apple put real time and effort into their server product. It's "okay" but doesn't approach great by any stretch of the imagination, truthfully it was never that great. I've been using it since 10.3 server. It's uh...a moody operating system (or rather app now).
