Unfortunately, customers new to IUP are not elegible for preapproval. They’ll have to apply in the moment, wait the couple of minutes for approval, and then continue the preorder process.

That is the only reason I’m not switching to IUP this year. It’s a good deal otherwise.

I'm under the impressive all IUP has to be done in store and not delivered.
Only t mobile carrier purchases it says on Apple site. Otherwise no I can do it online. I tried with 8 but didn’t fill out or apply completely. I just want to be sure that it holds my order in place as long as I am approved. Cause that would suck.

Some are going to get a shock if they've done a credit freeze.
Glad I'm buying it outright and not having to worry about all that nonsense. Still, going to be a short window to get in on the first round of shipments.

The freeze would only affect people using the IUP. People using the carrier upgrade programs (and that are an existing subscribers) won't have a credit check.

I know pre approval isn’t for new customers. What I’m asking is. When I order the phone it gives me a date before I click confirm and go through Apple upgrade form. Does that shippping date stay with me or get altered depending how long it takes to get approved.

I feel my phone date shipping would be locked in as long as I am approved. If not my phone goes to someone else. If you catch my drift

It’s a 0% finance, so even if you can afford to buy immediately, you’d be better off getting the finance and putting the $1000 in an interest earning bank account.
But you're also buying AppleCare+ which doesn't kick in until year 2. Since you trade up after 1st year, you wasted $129 and APPLE THANKS YOU VERY MUCH. You can also get 0% financing with the major carriers.

I am wondering that as well... If I check out right at 12:01, and the credit check takes longer than usual, does my shipping date slip?

Who said I was? I may buy it, but then I haven't paid for a new phone since the 4S and have had my 6s since launch because my stupid phone insurance replace my broken 4s with it. I'm not one who feels a need to get a new phone every freaking year. Especially when the upgrades are getting to be more and more of a joke. The X is a major one, so maybe I'll get it. But in the long run you are paying a FORTUNE for a PHONE that you will NEVER actually "own" because you are constantly upgrading. How does this make ANY financial sense?

So you are essentially paying $600 a year for something you'll never actually own and you will be trapped in this endless cycle of chasing the latest and "greatest" even thought the changes are minor - like this year's iPhone 8. It's better to bite the bullet and pay it off up front than a "death by a thousand cuts" method of getting stuff.

What's the point? But people like what they like and I would never begrudge you for it. Two year cycles always made more sense to me, then this stupid yearly updates. This is why the quality of the iPhones have gone to heck is because all of these manufacturers up updating every year when in reality there's not much that CAN be updated on a yrly basis.

Realize, you don't HAVE to upgrade every year with iPhone upgrade program. You can continue paying off your phone for the second year and then you get to keep it. It's financing at 0% and you can pay it off at any time and then you own it. It's just another purchasing option that you have.

With the iPhone X, I could definitely see my girlfriend wanting to have the phone after the first year. If that's the case, I'll just pay off the iPhone X and give it to her before upgrading. Options man... options.

In my opinion, IUP is smarter choice than spending up-front. You have the advantage of building your credit further, zero interest financing, and AppleCare. It’s the same reason why I use credit cards for everything, why pay cash when I can game the system and be rewarded for it.

That's not accurate.

Yes, AppleCare+ is an extended warranty, but it also covers things from the date of purchase the warranty does not:

AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $29 for screen damage, or $99 for any other damage, plus applicable tax. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone.
So without AppleCare+, as an example you won't get a shattered screen replaced for $29.

Allowing customers to "pre-upgrade" is what they very successfully did with the iPhone 8; I pre-authorized my upgrade and then was able to complete the order immediately when orders went live.

Think again. One inquiry on your credit report lowers your score... be it 5 points or 20, it lowers it... FACT.
Honestly, I've done it two years now and it has not affected my credit score in any major or noticeable way (I check my score often). In fact, I don't even have any Citizen One hard credit inquiries on my account at this point. I'm fairily certain it was there after I signed up, but they have either already dropped off or maybe I'm remembering incorrectly. Either way, no hard inquiries on my credit from the past two years.

I have two, one for each year of the program. The first should fall of any week now (they typically last two years). It seems to be pretty inconsistent on whether they use a hard or soft pull.

Your shattered screen will cost you $29 + $129 for the AppleCare+. Also it "Extends your coverage to two years...". Since you'll only have iPhone for 1 yr who cares about yr 2?

Actually I do it because I ran the numbers, and the amount I pay for a year's "lease" through the IUP until the new device is announced has always been less than the difference between what I would have to pay to purchase a new phone outright and what a one year-old phone typically sells for on the used market.

It's not as much of a concern with me as the accidental damage coverage is, and should I decide not to upgrade (say all next year's phones are FaceID only and FaceID is flaky) I have that extra year of coverage; you cannot purchase AppleCare+ coverage more than 60 days after you purchase your device.

For those purchasing outright, AppleCare+ coverage is transferable to a new purchaser, and it does increase the price you can get for your used phone if you want to upgrade anyway (but in the cases I've seen it would still cost you more than the iUP payments.)

I'm wondering about store pickup versus shipping, and how it relates to available stock. If I choose store pickup, am I limited to the stock from that store or do they allocate a phone for me and have it shipped to that store? I've seen some implication that you are better off having it shipped because there is more inventory that way. Is that true?

Just want to point out that getting a new phone is not upgrading your phone .... its getting a new phone. If George Carlin was alive still today, I would think he might include this in one of his many genius rants about terminology and how we use words.

At least for the initial launch, they will allocate you a phone out of the store's stock, and they know how many each store will be getting for the sake of upgrade orders.

For example, when I upgraded to the 8+, I could choose pickup at all but one of my local Apple Stores because one wouldn't have availability, and the site would only allow me to choose a store that would have stock or delivery.

That being said, there could always be delivery issues or other factors that could result in your phone not being available, but the general case answer is yes, if the site allows you to choose say the Apple Store at The Grove in LA, the Apple Store at The Grove will be getting a phone that will be reserved for you.

What I can't answer is whether that is an "extra" phone they are sent or just a matter of one of their known size shipment of phones is set aside for you.

I think it depends where you live...(someone can correct me if I am wrong). If you live in LA you might have a better chance of getting a phone if you choose store pickup (due to the number of apple stores in LA) whereas if you live somewhere where there is only one apple store within 50 miles it might be better to get it shipped..

Again someone can correct me if I am wrong

If you need a loan to get a phone, maybe you shouldn't be getting it in the first place. I know I sound like an elitist or something, but still....

While I could just buy the phone outright, I chose to join the IUP for the upgrades every year without thinking of what I’d do with my old device.

This past year, for instance, has been the first for a few years that I’ve gone caseless 100% of the time as I haven’t had to consider the condition of my phone.

Even though I don’t necessarily sell an old device to fund a new one, I’ve still liked to preserve as much resale value as possible.

So with the upgrade program It’s been very liberating and pretty cost effective. I’ll be using it for the foreseeable future I think.
