I'm somewhat neutral in terms of 'fanboy' vs 'hater' categorization--I like tech, particularly if it does what it's supposed to and doesn't annoy me in the process. I'm also a hardcore home media enthusiast. The AppleTV was the only Apple product I've bought that went back to the store. I think it failed because it appealed neither to the enthusiast like me (missing way, way too many features even for just a media extender), nor the casual users who would just use a TiVo or a cableco DVR (and who thus were looking for a tuner and DVR functions). I honestly still don't know what niche it was meant to fill, and the only person I know who owns one definitely falls into 'fanboy' status.

But I'm sure this has been hashed out elsewhere. Guess what I'm saying is that while I am amused by the 'haters' and trolls, it's hard for me to feel they're wrong about the AppleTV. That thing was just fail.

90k units in six hours, however, isn't.

Anybody else notice the new Apple site global navigation bar? Is it really necessary to have an iTunes tab still? How many people use iTunes that don't already have an iPod or iPhone? Why not just put iTunes within the iPod/iPad/iPhone sections? They could also just make it "iPod+iPad" because the iPad is just an oversized iPod Touch w/ 3G as an option.

Yes, they have. It just hasn't done well. A failure by other headline Apple products.

Eventually these things have to be admitted. The Apple TV flopped because it's too expensive, does not offer enough, and has not be brought into the modern relm (no iPhone interactivity in 3 years!).

The Apple TV is really the only truly modern iFlop.

You need to ask yourself what apple wanted to accomplish with the Apple TV. They wanted to use it as a wedge for iTunes into the HD video market. It was a door opener for later portable devices (perhaps a portable device like an iPod touch only bigger with a much better screen and better computational capacity for running apps.)

So wait...why are people who preordered it wanting to switch to in store pickup? That's very confusing...considering it's supposed to arrive on April 3rd to their doorstep...what's the point of making that switch?

I know a lot of people who do not have an iPod or iPhone but like iTunes. I used it before my first iPod. A lot of my folks at work had it on their PCs before our wonderful management decided it was not approved software and had iTunes and Quicktime removed from any of our over 100,000 PCs that had it installed:mad:. Go figure. Oh, but windows media player is okay because it was part of windows, UGH!

Stupid question, has anyone who reserved for in store pickup received a conformation email? I have not. I went to the Apple website to reorder just on the off chance my first one did not hit. I received a message telling me I already had placed an order and could not place another one.

Until the day I pick the device up, I am assuming I both have and don't have a reservation, just like Schrodinger's cat. I hope the wave collapses the correct way.

Will it be possible to remotely run a real Mac from the iPad? If I knew that I could get a hold of my primary computer anytime I wanted to that would help in making the decision to buy.

Tons of them. Back to my Mac, Jaadu, Logmein, Backtomypc, and probably a dozen more.

That's exactly why I ordered an iPad. I'm moving all the files from my various computers to a new Mac Mini server and will access it remotely. It will mean I'll have ALL my files available all the time at a moment's notice.

Total blowout.

Like, who didn't see this coming?

Only a few dozen analysts, geeks and veteran Mac haters who insisted it would fail.

I never would have thunk this... eva.
I thought people bought apple products because they were awesome.
Apparently not.
The iPad is 'meh' not 'awesome'.
The iPhone is awesome, the mac pro is awesome, the 27inch imac is awesome, the 17" MBP is awesome and the (cracked)apple tv+airport extreme is awesome .
Everything else is 'meh'. That includes the ipad, ipods, small screen imac, mac mini and the magic mouse (i get some severe RSI from using it it's such a painful thing. I wonder how painful the ipad would be to use while laying down to type/read/multitouch ).

So it's no good just because it doesn't meet your needs? Apple was smart enough beginning about 10-15 years ago (when Jobs returned) to stop making products that they thought would suit everyone. They make great products that thrill a given audience. The people who love one product may not like another, but that's no big deal. The iPod, iPhone, and iMac have done spectacularly well and it looks like the iPad will, too. Not everyone has to have the same needs or desires as you.

Already ordered mine to ship to my office, a magnificent birthday present from my magnificent girlfriend.

Does she have a sister?

I agree with this. Not that I'm saying some people won't genuinely enjoy the iPad. But I know that if HP or Dell or Microsoft had released this EXACT product, it would flop.

That is, of course, nonsense. Neither Dell, HP, NOR Microsoft is capable of doing something like this. They've had plenty of years and have failed miserably. If by some miracle they DID come up with something novel - and they didn't manage to mess it up, people would buy it. Heck, people buy their junk products, why wouldn't they buy a good one from them?

Google is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Despite Tough Talk, Google Still Censoring in China

That's one of the least problems with Google. Their blatant theft of intellectual property (by copying all the world's published books and making them available on the Internet) is completely unforgiveable. It has been put on hold, but they're still bribing legislators to try to get it passed.

I'm a big Mac fan, but I don't really think there is that much demand for this product. Too many pricing options -- not sure what to get here. No camera. Not to excited about it honestly.

Poll on CNN.com -- are you going to pre-order an iPad?

95% said NO
5% said YES

I've got to wait and see it first

I'm sure Apple is going to be broken hearted to see that only 17 million Americans plan to pre-order an iPad -- before they even get a chance to see one in person.

Do you have any clue how silly your post is?

{in reference to the Mac Cube} No, you didn't read my post. I said right now. As in currently. Not in the past, pre-Jobs. You disagree that Apple has managed to build brand image?

Maybe you were sleeping for those years, but the Cube was introduced after Jobs returned. So it IS an example of a Jobs-led Apple product and it clearly didn't do very well. Thus, your argument that Apple fans would buy anything Apple developed is cleanly disproven.

I ordered around 1PM on Friday and received my confirmation within 15 minutes or so, with full details about my order and the store information.

iPod revolutionized the planet? MP3 players yeah; but the planet? hahahah!

This makes no sense; you make it sound like Apple comes up with all these idea's on their own (phone, music player etc); which at the least, is quite wrong. Apple simply takes idea's that have been around for (quite) a while and does their own version of them. By your logic people went; "Wow I think I need a phone! How did they ever come up with such an idea?" when the iPhone came out.

Sure there were MP3 players, and there were phones before, even some smart phones, but it was not until Apple injected their ideas and their understanding of what makes a product great that the products exploted. Apple took an old idea and revolutionize it, and people said wow, I need that.

I'm in the same boat as you, as in I have yet to receive a confirmation email about my reservation and I tried reserving another one and got the can't place another order on this email address message.

I would be pissed if they tell me they don't have a reservation for me and I need a confirmation email for proof of reservation. Especially, after driving 1.5+ hrs to the Richmond, VA Apple Store & waiting in line for who knows how long.

I ordered around 1PM on Friday and received my confirmation within 15 minutes or so, with full details about my order and the store information.

Lucky you.

Good luck! I go the confirmation around 10:30 a.m. Eastern time on Friday, so maybe the earlier in the day ones they replied to quickly, and the later ones they're still figuring out if they have enough to go around. I'd be surprised if you don't find out one way or another before April 3rd. I'm sure you'll find a way to pester them for a definite answer. I would.

Actually not haha, though I do prefer Google services/products in general.

It's funny you mention Google though, because Google also has been pretty effective at developing its brand. If Google released an iPad it'd probably sell pretty well too. Right now, the way I see it, brand worship follows this pecking order.

1) Apple
2) Google
3) Everyone else (who don't have a chance in hell)

It's strange to me that a lot of people don't really evaluate the product as much as the label attached to it.
I'd consider buying into your perspective, IF Google hadn't had to price reduce their Nexus One "Google Phone" within a week or two of introduction. I disagree that if Google had released an iPad, that it'd probably sell pretty well too.

still no answer for the rest of the world yet.. grrr.. "australia ipad" no google news yet ;)

i originally dismissed it, but now I look at it more, thinking of apps like pressdisplay, it would sure save me that bloody early morning start so i can buy the paper. yeah, yeah, internet news and all of that but i still like a collation of the news in one spot. being able to read, skip over etc.. instead of loading 20-30 tabs and seeing if there's anything on them or not ;)

the only thing that bugs me is i really cant justify spending for the 3g version. for a sim card that i'll use maybe three times a year... if they allowed you to tether your iphone, it would be sweet, but i know they're not that silly...

Demeaning, Ignorant & hypocritical.
Seems like something a 6 year old would say.
:)

I found this hilarious. I wondered what gives someone the right to respond on a public forum in such an ignorant manner.

I would assume that the individual finds the safety of an internet forum provides the necessary environment to demonstrate how important he wishes he was.

Fascinating to be critiqued by someone who's career options seem to have reached the heights of DJ.

It's all marketing to build hype. 1st gen ipad adopters are going to get burned. I will be waiting a few revisions and a price drop before getting one.

Burned how? I'm capable of reading the tech specs and deciding how and where to spend my money. Are you thinking they're going to sell me a fake plastic mockup or something?

Don't worry, I'll keep the receipt just in case.

dude my ((yourgen) + 1)th gen iPad is going to rock your (yourgen)th gen iPad I can't believe you are going to buy one that's dumb. (gist: when does it end?)

Burned?

I say it was more likely Apple would get burned with the first gen iPhone then the first gen iPad. iPhone was totally new, new OS, new market for Apple. Now 3 years later, iPad has the strength and success of iPhone OS as well as an unmatched App Store to rest on. The technology has also matured, and I'd say Apple knows what they are doing in designing the iPad. Sure there may be some bumps in the road, but by and far, the iPad will only improve on what is a phenomenal product it is.

But only time will show how wrong all the trolls are.

I'm going to get burned? I am buying one for:

A) Business travel
- read books on plane and in airport
- listen to music on plane and in airport
- watch movies on plane and in airport
- watch slingbox in hotel room
- read and respond to email
- surf web
- light word and excel annotation
- read work-related pdfs
- play powerpoint/keynote presentations through a projector

B) around the house
- read books, surf the web, read email

C) in the office/in court
- take/read notes
- lookup documents
- research rules/statutes (using my own apps)

Are you saying the device won't do these things? Because if they will, I don't see how I'm getting burned.

Just remember, if it doesn't do absolutely everything on a checklist, that automatically means everything else it does is crap.
