Washington Post Reports 91,000 iPads Sold in Six Hours

The Washington Post has reported that Apple sold an estimated 91,000 iPads in the first six hours of the presale.

"On Friday, the first day that buyers could pre-order the device (it arrives in stores next month), Apple racked up an estimated 91,000 sales in just the first six hours of availability, putting temporarily to rest the Internet's persistent "iPad fail" meme. Analysts predict the first-year sales could reach 5 million."

These forums are a great place to go for entertainment. Comments range from the informed to the inept, or just plain stupid:). But, it is entertaining. Looking into my crystal ball I can see one of the first threads to appear after the iPad release. Does your iPad have a yellow tint:eek:? Oh no, not again. I was blessed in that I was one of the vast majority of folks who have an iMac 27" i7 that came with NO issues (week 47). If there are issues with the iPad I may have to start taking drugs or stay off the forums. The real iBashing begins on April 3rd, stay tuned:D. You know it will happen.

BTW, I'm a PC at work (since 1984) and I'm a MAC (since 2006) and PC at home so I'm not totally anti MS. I just like Macs better.

So, basically, I could take my $499 model, that I reserved for in store pickup, and turn around and sell it for $599, and then wait a couple of weeks to get another.

50k in two hours and 90k in six... If they carry on slowing down like this, by the end of the month, nobody will want an iPad! ;)

As a netbook owner, let me add to this gratification you seem to acquire from others' jealousy or self doubt.

Yes....I am jealous for the following..

* I am jealous that for the past couple of years I have had an ultra portable computer running OSX Leopard instead of waiting for something that does not. Oh, and I also run windows 7 when needed.

* I am jealous that unlike the iPad I run all the software I use on my home computer(mac mini) on my netbook. Adobe, iLife, iWork, Aperture...etc...

* I am jealous that I spent HALF of what the Cheapest iPad model sells for.

* I am jealous that 10x the storage capactity of the base iPad was included with my netbook, HDMI, card reader, etc..

* I am jealous that I run a dual monitor setup with FULL HD 1080P resolution (Netbook & 24" Display) as opposed to iPads 1024x768. Of course you have to purchase the extra connection kit to output video on the iPad.

* I am jealous that I have a near full size actual keyboard to type on. And sadly no, it does not take up a significant portion of the screen when using it. Yes, it was included! No extra purchase necessary!

* I am jealous that I have full functionality of websites and apps, unlike the iPad.

* I am jealous that I have the option of going with any broadband wireless carrier versus being forced to the superbness of At&t.

* I am jealous that I have a built-in webcam!!!!

* I am jealous that I can connect ALL of my electronics, drives, accessories, etc to my netbook.

WOW, I never realized just how jealous I actually was! I DO feel really dumb! YOU must feel amazing now though! Oh well......Enjoy!!
:)

I am jealous you are brand new here.

I am also jealous you snatched up the name Macrumors account.

Finally I am jealous that your netbook is and does so many things nobody else can get one to do in the world.

Kudos to you!

Really?

You mean like the wildly successful Mac Cube?

....you don't really know what you are talking about, do you? It'd be a good idea if buy some Tums tonight. With that attitude, you'll need some help to control stomach acid.

No, you didn't read my post. I said right now. As in currently. Not in the past, pre-Jobs. You disagree that Apple has managed to build brand image?

I am not saying the iPad is a "bad" device. I know some people will really like it. I don't think it is anything ground breaking though. My point is that many people will buy this device just because it is an Apple product, when they wouldn't give a similar device produced by another manufacturer a second look. That is present reality.

The Mac Cube is a bad example because that was way back when Apple was marginalized, had no brand image, and was on the verge of failure. Show me an Apple, Inc (as opposed to Apple Computer, Inc) product that has flopped, and I'll happily eat crow.

I don't think you will find one. I'm not some Apple hater. I use iTunes and own a Mac. I just think it's amazing that Apple has managed to build a brand to this extent. HAving a brand be synonymous with quality is one thing. To have a device automatically be "must have" in a lot of people's minds purely by virtue of its brand is quite another, and is pretty unprecedented.

Google

--- "do no evil. unless there's money involved."

You make it sound so black and white. Remember the choice here. It is not to be censored in China or uncensored in China. It is to be censored in China or not be in China at all.

Many Chinese, including those arguing for political freedoms, want Google to STAY in China, because even in it's censored form, it returns far more varied and edgy results than the "official"search engines.

What does pulling out of China do, precisely? The Chinese Government could care less - in fact, they might prefer it. Staying in China, on the other hand, gives people a search resource that, while not as open as it should be, is still more open than anything else.

All pulling out of China in protest of censorship would do is deprive the Chinese of that resource in the name of "proving a point" to a Western audience. The Western audience isn't the group without political freedoms though, so I think it'd be a pretty silly move.

Life is not black and white.

AppleTV. It's flopped so badly that its picture was removed from the front page of the Apple Store today. I say this with sadness as I've owned one since launch. It never took off.

How do you like your crow served? Fried? Battered? Fricasseed? ;)

wow...there was so much criticism after the ipad was announced but now apple is already running low on supplies!

Unclear if they are truly running low on supplies or don't want folks to flip flop excessively between the two lines.

1. The Apple store page is *STILL* staying that the direct orders deliver on the 3rd and it is quite late in the day. It just may be the case they can't guarantee it will be the same day on launch. At some point the reserve line at Apple stores may cap out. Or if it doesn't Apple will wish it did. (If they have to inventory more iPads than they have space for it could get awkward. Nor particularly want to warehouse a overly large number of unopened iPads in store. Only push enough to the stores to daily keep up. That doesn't mean there are not more in a more tightly secure warehouse somewhere else. )

People flip flopping between the lines is only going to be the allocation logistics more painful. It also makes keeping an accurate count more painful.

Much better to tweak things so that folks get in the right line in the first place. If you screw up and get in the wrong line you go to the back.

2. There is already a post by someone who ordered 2 by direct order and 2 by reservation. There is going to be a set of people who are going to attempt to hoard iPad is there is a notion that they are scarce. Same effect when scalpers try to buy up the tickets for a show at a venue.

The stores may have a fixed allocation and the online store another. It isn't really conservation of an iPad to cancel in one queue and add in another when from two allocation block. If too many folks order online that shouldn't strip the stores completely of iPads. Neither should too many folks directing them to physical stores and starve the online store.

Once the initial 'day one' onslaught passes it will be more clear how to balance better. Plus, as noted, on first day or so there are folks trying to cause artificial shortages so they can make more.

Two on order for delivery.
Two on reserve for pickup.
Same account.

Think there going to notice?

If you need to pick it up in store, this seems unfair to people who don't live near one. (This would include me; the nearest one is a two-hour drive away. This doesn't actually apply to me, since I didn't order an iPad, but I'm just sayin'...)

You don't need to pick it up at a store, it can be mailed to you. Some people find it more convenient to pick it up at a store however (no one would need to be home to sign for it, as an example why).

So around 5 or 6 million units sold is a flop?

I always enjoy visiting this forum and love the varied opinions that are put forward, derided and later agreed with. I think the concept of the iPad is terrific and I think I want one but …

I haven't seen one in the flesh, I haven't touched one, I haven't used one and - for all I know - the slick video adverts that Apple have produced may not be giving the true picture of what using an iPad is like. I remember here in the UK the uproar when Apple were forced to admit in their iPhone adverts that the iPhone was not as quick as it appeared on television.

And so … I would love the iPad to be a success, I would love the experience of using one to live up to the hype and - I am sure - I would love to own one. But do I want a first generation iPad or am I happy to wait until some of the inevitable wrinkles are ironed out?

All of which makes me smile at the excitement of waiting in a queue to pick up an iPad on the day it becomes available. One of the advantages of not being able to buy an iPad in the UK at the same time as you can in the US is that the comments that the early adaptors make will enable us (waiting patiently in the slow lane) to make an informed choice.

I wait to see and hear what the iPad is like in use. Only then will my palms itch and I may have to start reaching for my wallet.

Will it be possible to remotely run a real Mac from the iPad? If I knew that I could get a hold of my primary computer anytime I wanted to that would help in making the decision to buy.

My apologies if this is a repost, however this may be the answer to your question if you didn't know about it already. None of us know if this is one of those apps that will port right over to the iPad. You could wait and see/send an email to find out if they will in fact be doing an iPad-specific version of this app.

That's a matter of opinion. Steve Jobs intro'd it in its shipping version the same day as iPhone at Macworld 2007. Made a "Take 2" attempt the next year. And now Apple has removed it from the forefront display section of the online store.

So around 5 or 6 million units sold is a flop?
I guess we'd have to ask "compared to what?" Compared to all shipping iPhones, iPods, and Macs that I know of, 5 or 6 million units is pretty small over a product lifespan of nearly three years. (And, you're basing that number on analyst estimates - Apple has never released sales figures for AppleTV...)

I wasn't taking anything away from the AppleTV. As I said, I've had one since launch and I use mine (almost) daily. In my opinion, however, AppleTV is an example of an Apple product, released during Steve's return, that never took off, even with the shiny :apple: logo affixed to it. All this to say I believe, in general, that people buy Apple products based on their features/value and not due to the mere fact that Apple ships them. I expect iPad will be successful in a way that AppleTV hasn't been. I can see 5 million units moved in 2010 alone. But I'm the first to admit that I'm not as learned as the "analysts." ;)

I logged on to pre-order...

I paused and decided against it. I'm a fan but I will wait. I am sure I'd regret buying one when the camera gets added in the future.

To be honest I think the number of models is an issue for me. Rather than focus on just memory and 3g I would have preffered feature based pricing. I'm sure a higher priced model with camera would have been a better option to put to people then a real choice would have been available.

I also bet that a more expensive 3g/camera/64g/usb/hdmi version would have been sold out first.

Yes, they have. It just hasn't done well. A failure by other headline Apple products.

Eventually these things have to be admitted. The Apple TV flopped because it's too expensive, does not offer enough, and has not be brought into the modern relm (no iPhone interactivity in 3 years!).

The Apple TV is really the only truly modern iFlop.

 What are you 6? Get over the GD camera! Its not a feature, it never was. The device is the wrong shape with the wrong angle of use for any camera.

It has a compass for use with Augmented reality, just in case someone ever discovers a meaningful use of this tech.

Beyond that, the camera is silly, trite, overhyped and underused... its just a means for internet dorks to criticize. You're just a young individual who has been caught up in the hype. Bless your soul, but save your allowance for something you research with an open mind.

I disagree. They have not made a real attempt with it. Until Apple stops thinking of it as a hobby, they will not adopt anything really advanced into it. It sounds like that is changing, but I don't expect anything really knew until next year.

The other thing I'd say is I don't recall Apple really pushing the Apple TV. As in, really putting their weight behind it. It's been "out there" for a while but never really advertised with much vigor or anything else. It has always struck me as a product Apple, for now, *intends* to be sort of a niche product for people already into Macs and so forth, as opposed to a mainstream product. Because of that I don't know that I'd call it a flop. Wildly successful, no, but a flop? Not really.

And an aside - some people seem to think I've been trolling. That's not my intent. I was merely pointing out a phenomenon, the "I've gotta have it because it's the cool thing from the cool company." This has always existed to an extent, but Apple has perfected the way to tap into it and it seems to be a pretty bottomless well! So yes, I do think a lot of people (not all people) will buy an iPad because it's the newest thing to have, not because they really want or need it. I do think a lot of people would NOT buy it if it came from a company that wasn't so cool. I do think that's a sheep mentality.

BUT, I am not saying the folks here in this forum are sheep. In fact, most of the folks here are technically savvy, know what they are getting into, and have a use planned for the iPad, hence their decision to purchase one. I am talking more of a significant portion of the public at large who will buy this product, as with many others, simply because it is the thing to have.

Demeaning, Ignorant & hypocritical.
Seems like something a 6 year old would say.
