Silicon Alley Insider reports that Apple and Facebook were in negotiations for at least 18 months about a music-focused social networking service, but that the two companies were unable to strike a deal before Apple decided to launch Ping as part of iTunes 10 earlier this month.
Before Apple launched Ping, its iTunes team was in talks with Facebook for 18 months or more, a source with knowledge of the talks tells us.

While we don't know the details of their discussions, it makes sense that Apple may have wanted to build Ping as a music-tracking and sales service on top of Facebook's social graph. This could have allowed Apple to get what it wanted out of the relationship -- more iTunes and iPod sales -- without having to build a social network from scratch.
When Ping first launched, it offered users the option of using Facebook Connect to find friends who had already signed up for Apple's new music-focused service. The feature quickly disappeared, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs noted that the two companies had been unable to reach a deal due to "onerous terms" imposed by Facebook that Apple could not agree to.

A follow-up report claimed that Apple's initial usage of the normally-open Facebook Connect API was unauthorized due to the volume of traffic it was intended to generate, and Facebook consequently disabled Ping's access to the service. Apple was then forced to remove all signs of the functionality from the site, although the two companies have been said to still be in discussions about Facebook Connect connectivity for Ping.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall in a meeting between zuckerburg and jobs. Steve-o wins, of course.

I was surprised that Steve Jobs :apple: is not using Ping, I have searched but cannot see his profile.

He seems to have a love of music as demonstrated by the Keynotes.
Am I missing something?

Apparently not.

I think it needs facebook integration to get it going cause as of right now I don't want another account to manage.

Last.fm is good... (scrobbler keeps crashing my itunes wth) I'd like my facebook peoples to see my songs. I want facebook/itunes integration.

my 69¢

For me, ping would have been hugely successful if the facebook integration went through.

I love sharing music and finding new music - and a lot of my friends listen to similar styles. would have made new music discovery much easier and more of an everyday occurrence.

That was my immediate assumption as to the use of ping.

Since that disappeared, I have logged in twice since registration - both times with a visit span of 5-10 seconds.

I haven't been that impressed by Ping so far, but Zuckerberg is a punk for trying to extort Apple for connecting to their user base.

I hope Diaspora* makes a huge impact when it is released. Facebook is becoming onerously pushy for being a company that basically exists to data mine people through their interactions.

Apparently most of my favorite artists have decided to forgo Ping for the time being. Which means I'm getting nothing but Yo Yo Ma and Jack Johnson. Yo Yo Ma is a prolific Ping poster.

Using your real name in social media works as long as only your friends care about you. Once you get the attention of the general public, things can become dicey very quickly unless you are actively managing your public image (which turns social media into just another PR channel).

Ping needs facebook. If it can get into facebook, then the adoption numbers will really go up. Without it, it just becomes yet another network to manage. We don't need another one of those.

I've been trying as an independent artist to get our band a ping account with no luck yet.

Apple would have been better off going into negotiations with Last.fm. At every turn Facebook is becoming more caustic and hostile and it takes a lawsuit to keep user privacy settings.

Yes but only my mates are on my facebook profile and what i post is private between me and them. Im under the impression that what i post on there is public for all to see?

The privacy settings are simple and allow for only your friends (followers) to see your actions or for nobody to be able to follow you, thus keeping your actions completely private.

I love it how Apple noted that facebook had "onerous terms" with the deal. For once Apple didn't have the high ground and of course they lash out with that accusation like a child who got beat at their own game.

And yeah, ping without facebook integration is dead. What's really scary for Apple is if Facebook starts a music service incorporating all of their services. They may not have the hardware but they could definitely steal music sales...

Ah ok. Reviewing an album or leaving a comment does show your name and pic though? What i don't want is,for instance, to badmouth a particular track or album and have everybody who views that be able to see my real name, location and pic.

ping really is a joke. i like the idea but it's less than half baked. kinda 10% baked. really can't believe how bad it is. i keep waiting for the "oh i get it moment" but don't think it's coming. it's the new apple tv or ipod hifi!
(i AM a hi-fi love, i must admit)
