Wont use Ping till i have the choice not to have my real name as my profile name

THIS x 10. I have complained to Apple on this ( not that it will matter ) and got no response. I don't understand why we can't just use our existing nicknames on itunes.

Good, I'm glad. Facebook sucks for music, and all an alliance would have done is hamper iTunes and Apple's idea of a music based social network.

NT1440, (rock comment aside) is right.

In 2010, a large number of companies moved their primary online presense to Facebook. Watch any TV commercial, and instead of a company URL at the end of the commercial, they'll show: "Facebook.com/company"

In addition, many major "free" and subscription services now have Facebook as their primary login rather than doing their own registration service. Major news and commerce sites are filled with sidebars showing your Facebook friends and telling you how many of them "Liked" this story or bought this product...

This trend has become so prevalent, that I fear by 2012 you will file your taxes to Facebook.com/IRS...

Again, just because it exists and is hyped doesn't mean it's as prevalent as some would have you believe.

I know zero out of hundreds of friends and acquaintances who rate anything online via facebook. I know zero guys over about 25 who even use facebook. Kids use it and women use it, but then just to engage in the strange practice of posting photos of themselves and saying hi to people they don't really care about.

Of course the crotchety media outlets use it. They're always out of touch with reality anyway.

And your experience means NOTHING to me ....

I am 38 years old myself, and a regular Facebook user. I have roughly 40-50 "friends" on there who are also regular users, all over age 25 -- and all are people I really did/do know in real life.

Most of us use it to share interesting web URLs to stories we know our friends would like to read, and to feel like we have some idea of what the rest of us are doing these days. (One of my friends moved from the USA to Taiwan, and another moved to Spain - so the time-zone differences alone make it impractical to just call on the phone and have a conversation.) With Facebook, you not only feel like you're "keeping up" with them, but some of the photos they share add a lot of value too. (My friend in Spain used to talk about the beautiful sunsets there, which meant little to me until she starting posting photos of some of them. Absolutely amazing stuff!)

Always an exception to the rule. This being a tech website, the posters here are probably more likely to engage in something like Facebook.
