OMG - A company that wont fall under the Apple spell.

Looks like it is the death of Facebook:rolleyes:

The article says "While we don't know the details of their discussions..."
Which means it's pure speculation.
Oddly enough, how long has iTunes had a presence on Facebook and been promoting the live shows and new releases? That seems to be about 18 months or so too? Perhaps their "source with knowledge" was just referring to that.

PING is pointless without Facebook integration. It needs to be back in place and it needs to be single-click simple to tie your Apple ID to Facebook login.

Wait, wait... does that mean Apple was working on Ping for at least 18 months? Really?

I don't believe it. 18 months and that's all they came up with?

I don't like Ping. I still buy the same number of songs and iPods after Ping as before Ping came out. I am curious if anyone likes Ping.

I've reviewed it and I simply cannot find a purpose for Ping. I'm not even sure what it's for. I search for an artist and it takes me to itunes music, what's the deal?

Not surprised

I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg wanted 75% of any iTunes sales revenue through Facebook connect.

Ping is as pointless as Bing. i'd stick to LastFM and Facebook thx very much. most ppl i know dont even know what Ping is and they all got itunes

Facebook is way played out. Ping is dead in the water. I wonder what the next social networking fad will be. Whatever it is, I'm not in. I have actual friends.

Hey guess what, so do I. And like me, they are in other parts of the world at college.

Man, I just wish I had some type of way to communicate with them casually where a phone call isn't needed. Ah, but those kinds of things are just fads anyway, screw my friends. Clearly I'm just going with the crowd on this one.

Just as Myspace blew up and then died, so will Facebook when the next cool thing comes along. I keep fine contact with people all over the country without being on Facebook. I'm an adult though, so it's not really as common to use these sites.

Myspace was much more of a tweens and teens thing. Facebook on the other hand seems to solidly be a part of the social fabric. Now, google's supposed answer to facebook may unseat it, but at this point I think its too engrained in our society to go down the tubes in any crashing manner.

I'd say facebook is to social networking as Google is to search engines.

The privacy settings are simple and allow for only your friends (followers) to see your actions or for nobody to be able to follow you, thus keeping your actions completely private.

I have discovered that as long as you know the name of at least one person that is on someones friends list you are able to message them, see their pictures, etc even if their profile is private.

don't ask me how I know

I think the message is that it's ingrained in society, but I don't know any males over about mid-20's who use it. Yes, this is a tech site, so there'll be more on here, but beyond younger folks and middle aged females, I don't think others care about what it offers.

Uh, Facebook is HUGELY engrained into business at this point. Do you live under a rock or something?

This. I'm astounded that they didn't just write the whole thing in the last four days before the keynote, because that's certainly the impression they gave. Why oh why do they keep slamming their heads into the wall and embarrassing themselves with these pitiful excuses for online services?

So was AOL, Altavista, Askjeeves, Lycos, Yahoo, etc. Facebook is around because nobody has come up with an alternative the people who are trying are basically mimicking the site and giving it a new name.

Young people are fickle and drive change no matter how "hugely ingrained" facebook is it doesn't change the fact that Facebook is popular and their parents are on it which makes it uncool. The older people will follow suite soon after because they want to be young and hip too.

What business? Again, I think that's the message, but not the reality. Beyond entertainment and tech fields, what would be the point? For advertising, maybe, but nothjng serious. I am close to people in education, automotive, energy, medical, and others and I don't know anyone who uses it for business purposes. I think maybe since you're in college, you're hit with the hype about social networking technology, but it's all smoke and mirrors.

Yeah AOL was pretty deep at one point. I do think Facebook will fade away.

I am not really sure why it took off as it did. It doesn't make sense to me personally... but I have been online almost 30 years, so I didn't and don't need facebook to talk to people online.

Facebook originally was only for College students, then they expanded to high school students. I thought that was actually a good way to grow it up. I am really surprised though it has become so popular outside those demographics. Facebook is plagued with verbal diarrhea from others and from people exploiting others.

Eye,

I guess he meant marketing. That is all any businesses do with it. Facebook is used to exploit its members into advertising stuff to other members. It is the biggest marketing exploitation in the history of the world. Since I do online marketing for a living, I know how it works and what is going on. If people only could step back and see what they have enabled. Yet the same people will complain they don't want ads with websites or tv shows with commercials... Yet they are exploited beyond all benefit to market and solicit others for all kinds of businesses.
