I feel fairly confident that if they do go ahead with this partnership, they'll integrate it much in the same way they integrate other useful stuff. Like if you search for a (US) area code, it offers maps. If you search for "Jacksonville, Florida", it shows you images of the city, as well as a map.

Similarly, you'll probably be searching for U2, and the top link will be iTMS links and some album art. I doubt they'll make it another tab - to specific.

The world's biggest search engine + the worlds biggest music store: it's like a MSN only better. It's obvious that with or without apple, Google will do this: Gmail to counter Hotmail, Google News agains MSNBC etc.

Google seem to be building up a portal with just as many features as MSN or Yahoo but are making it simpler - where have we seen that before in the world of computers.

After this I wouldn't be shocked if Wikipedia became Google's version of Encarta.

Plus it's good for consumers - you're trying to find the name of a song, just google a line of it and you'd get a link to the store at the very least. Only thing apple could do to better the store after this is bring in something like MyCokeMusic's Coke Tag service when the iTunes phone comes out.

Apple + Google.............just has to be good :D
Apple + Google = .... Goople?

;-)

Goofiness aside, Google and Apple would be excellent complementary companies. Apple has the hardware, OS, and music stuff covered ... Google has tons of awesome web stuff.

Also, both manage to take preexisting mediocre technology and turn it into something wonderful, inventive, and popular (Apple and MP3 players; Google and online mapping).

They are two companies that rely on being creative, innovative, and just plain cool. Dare I say it ... I almost think they should merge (they don't compete and their products complement one another ... why not?).

I think Google is one of those "Think Different" companies, similar to how Apple is (or, more like Apple in the 80's). It'd be an interesting merge, but this is great for now.

I'm guessing that Google will just include links to the iTMS in searches related to music, and that's all. Doesn't make the story too interesting, but a nice extension for Google.

I love Google :p

I used to often say how amazing Google is. Now, I most often say how amazing the Internet is, since Google IS the Internet. I am close to saying that if Google cannot find it, it is not on the Internet

Don't read up Microsoft's history, then. You'll be freaked out for life.
It's not done until Lotus won't run!

Could also be a handy feature for local musicians to feature their stuff. Wouldn't it be neat to also see something like: "Check out these local, up-and-coming, groups right in your hometown/region."

No, not really.

The thing that made me switch from altavista to google (and originally, yahoo to altavista) was that google didn't PUSH stuff onto me. It never tells me things i don't ask for, which is why I like it so very much. If I wanted to know about up and coming groups right in my hometown, then I'd do a, well, I'd do a google search, quite honestly.

So, it should only show iTMS links if you've actively searched for a song or band, much like it only shows movie times if you've searched for a movies.

For those of us that have lived from the dawn of computers:

Google - the ultimate search/web engine (beat MSN/Altavista/Yahoo solidly)
Intel - the largest chip manufacturer (been there from the start)
Apple - the ultimate software provider (speed & reliability)

Anyone see were this is leading?

Cringeley talked a few weeks about a possible Intel/Apple merger. Now if we speculate further.

A Google/Intel/Apple merger should be the ultimate competitor in the market vs. Microsoft.

they should improove their backstock

get some more underground electronic stuff in there

they hardly sell anything i am interested

Maybe you should try http://www.bleep.com - far more eclectic electronic oriented, featuring stuff from well known indie labels as well.

Best of all, they use LAME encoded MP3's! No Fairplay/DRM bollocks!

Photos

Maybe the music link-up between these two great companies could be followed by development with other parts of the iLife suite.

I'm not aware of the differences between Picasa (which doesn't have a Mac version yet) and iPhoto, but could Mac users benefit from Apple and Google working together with their photo software?

Hello (Google's 'photo chat software') sounds pretty nifty, anybody here know anything about it, or Picasa in general?

I wish that it was possible to find and download album art from iTunes. Scanning it in wasn't so bad for me, but finding the right settings for the images was a pain in the butt. I finally found the "secret sauce" settings that provides excellent album images, but won't explode the size of each song file. :p

Nonetheless, it would have been easier if I could have just imported the Art from the MusicStore or Amazon.

Wow, excellent insight here. I never thought of it that way. But Apple could be looking at a way of marketing iPhoto for Windows through Google. Picasa is a great application, and probably the best photo browsing/casual editing software on Windows right now.

Video Content

Here comes the content for the video iPod. Steve has always said that they would only do a vPod when it wasn't a 'tourtured user experience.' Well mix video.google.com with the iTunes interface and subscription capability, and bang! Search for say "The News Hour With Jim Lehrer." Subscribe and synch, and it gets added it to your video iPod for later viewing. Easy. Payment via ITMS.

Cheers,

I just can't see that happening...especially the apple/intel bit...

Google promo

This may mean nothing, but Apple are still mentioning an advertising discount deal with Google here, but if you click the linky the Google side of it has vanished. It was a one-shot deal, so the promo may have simply run its course.

I don't get the promo? It states
Google AdWords
iTunes and Google have teamed up to create a special offer exclusively for iTunes signed labels. Purchase keyword advertising from Google and get a one-time promotional discount when you link to your music on iTunes.
Do labels have to pay for a link to there music on iTunes??

Good thinking....It may just be one pivotal step in that direction where Google whets the appetite of the crowd and Apple swoops in to offer a "packaged" version of a VideoStore.

Maybe this news is also reason why the recent Errol Morris ads were cancelled......?
