Apple and Meta Reportedly Discussed AI Partnership for iOS 18

Many people here are getting exposed to too many fake news or conspiracy theories.
Chill, don’t panic over something you don’t fully yet understand.
Nevertheless it doesn't change the fact that Apple has opened it's doors for OpenAI if the customer agrees. It doesn't change the meaning of my previous statement. Just keep in mind that Apple is looking for an AI partner in China.

Considering how often ChatGPT has been down lately, it would be more of a surprise if Apple weren't having talks with a whole lot of other AI services. 😅

Guys, Apple is treating “AI” like search in Safari, pick your own.

No one is forced to use anything. No one is “desperate” for a chatbot.
Apple has build in the past intentionally the "golden cage" because they knew that customers are not aware of what they are clicking on and really happens with their data. With that option Apple has put many users under the risk that they still agree and don't know what's really behind.

None of their data is passed to ChatGPT unless you’ve opted to log in to your account for it (and I don’t know why you’d do that in the first place)…

You must be a fan of The Terminator.
If kept under control AI could be a great assistant. Fill it with general knowledge but nothing personal about you.
Think of it as your Secretary; she could get greedy or mad at you, and use what she knows to drag you into the mud, or be a happy and efficient assistant. It’s a chance you took when you hired her.
That's an epic "if".
15 years before the Terminator was Colossus The Forbin Project and 7 years before Ahnode was Demon Seed. More ominous warnings.

I'm already very against this AI craze and META has to be the worst of it all regarding protection of its users. Absolutely not for me.

What is hindering you ?
If the managing of AI settings in the 16 series is a mess with multiple 3rd party integration for offloading requests, i'll then switch to a basic phone/mp3 player. I don't want another 'select your default browser' selection window but for AI. I'd rather ios 18 had a default for no for everything ai related when it comes to third party access

Steve Jobs era Apple- sure, I'd trust that he had the huevos to keep Facebook in check.

Tim Apple era? Get ready to be pimped out for them shareholders and watch your data get leaked on the dark web when their lack of software QC fails

I have great unease about anything AI.

Without a clear understanding on how AI can’t, not doesn’t, make me the product, I’ll be a cautious late adopter.

And meta? Big red flag. If Apple were to work with meta I’d def need an opt out switch in settings. Needed for all TBH.
Could just look into how it works. There are plenty of papers and documentation on how this stuff works. It’s still just code at the end of the day. It’s just a self categorizing system.

No thanks, does Apple know where all the AI information goes? Directly to Zuckerberg.

No one is forced to do anything, agreed.

However, I wonder if AI was much further ahead instead of chasing the pack, would Apple be positioning it like a search engine or even giving people an option?

Did they take this strategy because they had to, or because they fundamentally believe in giving choices. The later is not a very Apple trait.

As long as its true that we can choose not to use AI on iOS18 and beyond I'm fine with not using it and leaving it disabled (or never turned on I should say). The world has existed fine so far without it, I don't trust it and have no desire to use it.

I’m interested in the on-device search. Being able to have Siri search my messages and photos vs having to manually scroll myself sounds good to me. Not interested in asking questions of an internet aggregator though (Open AI).

Perhaps both. Apple may very well have been behind on training models. Nonetheless, vast training has never been compatible with their privacy stance. In other words, Siri has been quite limited seemingly because Apple has restrictive its data harvesting reach. Therefore, Apple might now be taking the approach, Siri is good but if you prefer these other (“better”) chatbots err digital assistants, you can now… But you need to accept how/why they are more “knowledgeable."
