Hilarious!

Just watching the forums to see the reaction of Uncle Steve's faithful to the news of a News Corp/Apple pairing will be good for ****s & giggles.

I'm just hoping the Apple users in general are intelligent enough to not be part of the NewsCorp's "War on Factual Reporting".

I would so subscribe to this. Big fan of the FoxNews approach (e.g. Fair and Balanced reporting) and News Corp in general.
They ever plan on actually being Fair & Balanced?

Much like their roundtable several days ago with Chris Matthews discussing Obama's European Trip that included 2 Republican Congressman, a Tea Party member that believes Obama wasn't born in America, and a Right-Winger that couldn't go a few seconds without calling Obama "Anti-American"

Yes, very fair and balanced

News is a wrapping for advertising.

Putting the Murdoch/political angle to one side and all the irrelevant stuff about Fox's mission statement, this has the potential to revolutionise news delivery and publishing formats with News Corp exploiting first mover advantage at what is, I'm sure, a loss-leading price as they've done over the years with the cover price of The (London) Times, driving others to the edges of the market.

Floating 'highly visualized and interactive content' means they're taking things a considerable step further than most offerings so far, particularly with advertising I suspect, and will undoubtedly drive an arms race amongst news and media suppliers to match production values and cost.

Online advertising costs compared to print are far lower. The angle for advertisers here is what they can do with the medium and how much it's going to cost them. Another nail in the coffin for print media...

...and the Kindle.

What!? You have NO right to call yourself a TRUE Amuricun, sir! ;)

I am indeed happy about the news but would be happier if this didn’t get the horrendous Murdoch name and its questionable slapped all over it.

Hahaha...great sarcasm...though a little subtle.

I think 99% of all news now is biased and poor. CNN/MSNBC/ABC/NPR lean very left, FOX leans right. The only decent news I've seen lately happens to be Russia Today (RT).

There's very little investigative journalism these days. It's all slated so bad its laughable. It's forced people to go to the internet to find some shread of news.

Sadly I think even TMZ has better news than any mainstream network.

Just because they say at every commercial break that they are "fair and balanced" doesn't mean it is true.

In fact, whenever you meet a person or organization that constantly needs to reassure you of something, you can count on it actually being the opposite. Pravda, after all, meant "the truth" even though it often printed the opposite.

Fox News is provably neither fair or balanced, but if your prejudices happen to be tickled by their slanted bias, it feels fair or balanced to you. Studies have shown that those who get their news from Fox are the least informed of the population . . . but they think they are the most informed, of course.

None of this has anything to do with this story. This won't be Fox News on the iPad, but a Murdoch product of some nature and bias that is not yet known. In other countries Murdoch doesn't push the fake conservative nonsense that we see on American TV, and so The Daily might be quite different. We'll have to wait and see. Murdoch, after all, is not especially conservative (not in the American sense), but rather he is after profit and power however he can find it. If profit meant he should push liberal ideas, Fox News would instantly switch to being liberal.

One thing I do know about The Daily: the price is right, but only if they provide something that cannot easily be found for free elsewhere on the Net. In other words, it can't just be the daily news. If they provide more, they may succeed. And if Steve Jobs is involved, I bet he knows this already.

Explain yourself Apple!

There better be a good explanation for helping this company.

Apple has been the most positive company IMHO for people in these economic times. What would we do without out iPhones, iPods, etc.

News Corp has been the most negative company IMHO to our country causing division and extreme polarization with racist remarks on Fox News, lies about our president, and feeding misinformation to the public.

Maybe Apple feels they have to do it before Google does. I don't know. Just let News Corp make their own App and do it all themselves. Let them figure it out.

ya i don't really know what to think of this... its degrading into a political debate really fast. I truly think the only good reporting that is ever done is PBS especially the Frontline programs, however these are free already. Maybe a PBS frontline ipad app would be cool with interactive content, that would be nice!

The best innovation here is the somewhat reasonable pricing. Now I haven't seen the content, so maybe it's a little overpriced or a little underpriced, but $1.00 a week not that outrageous, it's in the ballpark to get people to sign up in sufficient numbers to sustain. I do wish Apple would drop their obsession with everything having to be in one dollar increments. Some things might sell a lot better at 50¢ each, or $1.50. Better yet, get microtransactions working that can even do fractional cents. Just opens up more possibilities.

I will so subscribe to this. And I have no idea why you would rate this negatively- even if you don't agree with the political slant of his news organizations, you cannot beat the idea that this will spur other publications to follow suit. That's good for the environment- less news printing.

Political arguing aside, the answer to "Why would Apple do this?" is simple. Anyone who pays attention to ratings knows why . . . FNC outperforms all other cable news channels, COMBINED.

Most popular smartphone? iPhone. Most popular music player? iPod. Most popular tablet? iPad. It seems Apple likes being on top.

And less hot air! If Murdoch's "reporters" will train their efforts on print/tablet "journalism" and less time spewing lies on television, climate change could be slowed. I'm all for it.

Good posts.

My hunch is that it will be advertiser-driven at that price, almost a freesheet, stuffed full of celebrity gossip and sports. News Corps can leverage their own content from all over the globe at little extra cost. The only relevant comparison to Fox is the production values they'll bring to the game, which is why Steve Jobs is so interested as it'll show off the iPad's capabilities.

Another possibly interesting angle for advertising and consumers: how easily it might be able to be customised on an individual basis depending on location and readership demographics.

I would so subscribe to this. Big fan of the FoxNews approach (e.g. Fair and Balanced reporting) and News Corp in general. Aside from this, what I am most looking forward to seeing is the meltdown here when Rupert Murdock joins Steve Jobs on stage to introduce this.

Apple should have launched with this on DAY ONE of iPad sales.

I doubt this revelation would be of any surprise to MR regulars.

This is satire right? Right?

The fact that The Daily's offices are in the NewsCorp building bodes ill for anything other than a highly biased slant on the news.

The price is right and if the quality is there, then this could take off. Murdoch is more known for his online failures than his successes. He simply couldn't leave his hands off MySpace and ran it into the ground. Also, if The Daily doesn't successfully connect with all the other social media companies, it isn't going anywhere.

Murdoch isn't stupid, but I reserve judgement until a year after this is launched. It may take off, it may not. time will tell.

Hope they bring this to iPhone/iPod Touch as well. Will subscribe day one if they do.
