Mine says it'll be here by the 11th of December. :)

Same here. I was a little worried by the "3-5 weeks" quoted by Amazon, but in my order it said estimated ship date: November 29th, and the web site says estimated delivery December 6-12. No sweat. Oh, I ordered mine on Friday at 4:15PM PST.

Why is it OK(For Apple) to be all out for a profit and not other companies? I always thought the reason people went to college or saved money to start a business was to make money someday. Take a look at Microsoft, they get sued every week and have to pay up Billions of dollars. Apple is going to be sued by the European union most likely(over Ipod dominance) and they should start saving their money for the judgement. Of course it would be nice if Apple gave a little more of a discount, its just not to be.

Brand value is very high on Apple's list. They are not going to cheapen the perception of the Apple name by being known as a discounter. It worked for Bose, it's working for Apple.

Hey, don't put Bose in the same sentence as Apple. Bose is crap. They have great marketing and nothing else. Apple actually has great products.

We owe Apple nothing then

Although most of us love Apple and the products they make, and Apple wants to make it's customers happy, they are a corporation, not a good friend.

If Apple wanted to give the best deals possible, they would sell iPhones for the cost of the materials only. But they don't. They need to make money. Does anyone else remember when Apple almost bit the dust due to bankruptcy?

I am fine with them wanting to make a substantial gain on the products they make.

It is very kind of them to give any discount whatsoever, as they don't owe us a thing.

In the same line we thus do not owe Apple anything. Thus like other companies, if the specials are not good enough, we don't purchase or don't purchase from them. Low discounts thus will equal lower sales for Apple or any other company. Apple, having a monopoly on Mac hardware as well as iPod & iPhone hardware would probably sell abut the same number of units without a special. For that reason the lack of really good specials is showing up this year.

Office 2004 to 2008

Nice move by Microsoft to keep Office on lots of macs in spite of iWork. I mean, how could you not buy it? Well, I'm in Canada so I'm not invited, but still, enough of you go out and buy office for Mac today, that keeps market share up and theoretically, you might convince iWork users to go back to office down the road.

(edit: this assumes the student edition, where your final price ends up around $68)

Happy shopping, I'll be thinking of you all while I'm at work today! :)

Amazon's price was $123 with a $6.99 upgrade to Office 2008 Special Edition. For me iWork won't do the job. Office will. At least one of the Open Office type programs will do the job for me. I just have to see how much work they will be to convert my Excel tax program to.

More market share would be lost to the anti MS group, in my opinion, than to those switching to iWork. I have iWork '08, I just can find nothing useful yet with Numbers. With upgrades coming I've tried, but either things would not work or they were so slow or extra time consuming that I have stopped using it until at least another upgrade. I mean upgrade, not just update.

Minor side 'vent' and than I'm done with the subject. All companies have clever marketing that succeed. Apple doesn't? Don't pretend not putting that blowfly up your nose. However, I'm tired of hearing -- no pun intended -- about Bose being "crap." Granted it it may not be the best thing you've ever heard or be as "lifelike' as they claim but it is by no means crap. Maybe overpriced but that's opinion and I'm not going to go into that. Opinion again yes but only so far...If you think that something of similar size with the same number of similar sized speakers sounds as good as something like the Bose Wave Radio, you're mistaken. I'm not claiming that they have some kind of phenomenally breathtaking technology. I'm most certainly not saying that there aren't better audio systems out there because there absolutely are. I'm saying for the size of the unit and speakers it does quite well. A home theater will sound better but that's like comparing a Mac mini to a Mac Pro. You may be "trippin'" but there's no way you could realistically think that some kind of $25 "boombox" or whatever those compact battery powered radios are called is comparable.

I got a great deal at Amazon for a Mac Mini 2GHz for only $735 after rebate with free shipping and no tax. [Got tired of waiting at MacMall. Besides, I didn't care for the free printer or Parallels (I'm getting VMWare Fusion)]

I am a student at a local community college that sells Apple products and even with the student discount, after adding tax, I saved $110 going through Amazon instead. :D As much as I want to support my local community college, I couldn't pass up saving $110 off of an $800 product! :)

It looks like prices are back to normal now.

One thing I noticed thought that I didn't catch. The description says that the Mac Mini comes with Tiger instead of Leopard. I thought all Macs come with Leopard now. Could this be old stock? Could I still get Leopard from Apple if I do end up with Tiger instead? (That was one of the reasons why I waited to upgrade to an Intel Mac Mini - I wanted Leopard) Anyone have this type of experience before?

Changing the HDD

Hi all,
I am about to buy my first mac in a few days. I was just doing some comparisons and it seems the education discount on Apple's site gets eroded anyway with the sales tax and if the other places dont charge tax then i guess there really isnt any reason to buy fron the Apple store.

So my issue is the same as that of another forum member who asked about hard disk replacement. I would certainly like the 7200rpm HDDs but it seems no one has those listed on their websites as part of the notebook or an upgrade.

Has anyone actually bought a notebook with the 7200rpm drive from any store ?

I may have to go to the physical apple store and buy my notebook so i had another question, would they have notebooks with the 7200 hdd in store or do they simply replace the HDD ?

thanks.

Parallels
Through our affiliate vendor, Digital River, you can get $10 Off Parallels Desktop 3.0 or $10 Off on Parallels 3.0 Upgrade.
I realize MacRumors is pushing Parallels but a brief comment about Parallels. After using it for a long time reasonably happily I tried VMWare (Free 30 day trial) this last weekend. I have to say it is far smoother in every respect. I did a parallel (pardon the pun) instal so I have both able to run, but you can also convert the Parallel's installation if required with an additional utility.

I suspect Parallels is not totally Leopard friendly (due to increased problems I have had since Leopard installation) whereas VMWare is. It is hard to put into words why it seems better. I would suggest anyone interested try the 30 day test run and see for themselves.

If it did have Tiger, you would be able to get Leopard from Apple

I liked the Parallels concept of being able to run a win app transparently and within the Mac OS desktop (Coherence). Does VMware have something like it ?

I do too, and VMWare has an even better implementation. As I said, I use Parallels and I am not knocking it. However I find VMW even better.

Apple Store UK are having the sale (if you can call it that) this Friday.
Most european countries now have this on their apple sites.
We'll see how "generous" Apple will be to non-americans, maybe 1-2 % discount ?
Or a free Apple mousemat ?

Mine looks to be on schedule. I ordered mine Friday morning.

BFD deal Microsoft Rebate!!

WTF, when I went to check my rebate status for the $100 rebate on Microsoft office, I found that my rebate request was unqualified according to the http://rebatestatus.microsoft.young-america.com/entrypage.asp order status website. I ordered my office on November 23rd from Apple Store online and followed the directions for the rebate, I sent my emailed Apple Store invoice and the original front page of my MS office manual for the rebate. Anyone else receive a rebate yet? I have yet to find out why my request was rejected I will call soon or should get something in the the mail soon regarding my rejection as the MS website said they would be mailing me soon.
