EPP and the sale, 4gb Nano for $129, well, I guess that would be about the price when they hit the refurb section. After taxes, I saved a little (but not much) over macmall and amazon. They really should hold the sale on Jan 19th:rolleyes:

Six toasty minutes left for MacMall. I just picked up (11:47AM PST, 11/23) a Macbook, case, printer, and free shipping. After rebates, and after I sell the case and printer for about 50% of their value, the MacBook comes out to a total of $867! :D

I ordered Office 2004 from Amazon at 9am EST and it ships from Amazon on the 26th. They should've been more clear to people who ordered later that they may not be able to get the rebate.

I'm sayin'... i had no idea to check macrumors.com (figured it was a holiday for the site... oops)... i would have picked up a couple copies of office 2004 just for the upgrade later.

Unfortunately, I didn't find out about that discount until 8am this morning. Sheesh.

A question from someone suffering from the Amazon.com late ship date:

I bought office 2004 from amazon.com today and received a ship date well after december 23. However, I already have a copy of office 2004. What if I sent in the front cover of THAT instruction manual and the receipt from the new copy? Or would microsoft check with amazon and see that I still hadn't received my new copy?

Thanks for the help!

I'm in the same boat. Already have Office 2004, and Amazon isn't shipping until around the 24th. It seems as though including the manual from the copy you already have would work. Maybe just cross out the estimated shipping date.

Is this the manual for which they want the first page?

Yea when I read the 3-5 week shipping for Amazon, I just got it from apple for 25 dollars more since I will get it probably Friday or Monday. I got scared with the manual thing because you have to postmark the rebate by Dec. 23...

Well, it's Saturday and I can finally get through to Mac Mall's site. It seems they've actually LOWERED the overall price of the MacBook Pro to match Amazon (now $1749 after rebate instead of $1779) PLUS you still get the free (after rebate) case, printer and Parallels (or Fusion for $20 after rebate).

My only problem now is that I really don't want a lousy 120GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro. On Apple's site you can upgrade the thing easily enough, but they don't have these deals there. I see an option on Mac Mall to have them upgrade your memory for you to either 3 or 4GB, so why don't they have an option to install a larger hard drive for you? I'd like a 250, ideally. 120 is terribly small for going on 2008, IMO and while I could use an external or network drive at home, the whole point of a Notebook is portability so I'd like a larger one internal for on the go (not have to lug one with me).

I assume if I change out the hard drive myself I'm looking at voiding the warranty, so what are my options?

I'm going to look around some other Mac stores and see if they have any deals with upgrade options. I only want the 2.2GHz Mac with 128 video memory because it's $500 cheaper than 2.4 with 160. That's only 9% faster (tests show no advantage to the extra video memory under normal conditions) and only a lousy extra 40GB of space. It's a $75 option to get the 160 on the 2.2 at Apple's site. I'd rather have a 2.2 with 160 than a 2.4 at that rate, but there is no such option on MacMall or Amazon.

Update:

Other World Computing has a 200GB 7200 RPM Hitachi for $214.99 plus they'll give you $40 back on your 120GB MBP drive. That seems like the way to go ($1925 total after rebates for a MBP 2.2 with 200@7200RPM drive an 2GB of memory), but is that going to void the Apple warranty?

As long as they are an authorized Apple Service Center that would not void your warranty.

Question on the office deal

Hi Guys,

So last night I did the office deal $125 edu from amazon that way I get the $100 plus new version in 2008. it said ship few weeks, but has now already shipped. Of course ship date will be Nov 24 whereas the purchase date will be Nov 23. Think that will be ok for the rebate on the $100????

Next, what should I do with my old copy? If I uninstall the old copy on my machine, could I sell the old copy on ebay?

Finally, what do you guys send in for the 2008 upgrade? Do you send that rebate in already too? Do you send the bottom panel that has the UPC and stuff, it said "box top," which confused me cause the box bottom is what really has the details.

Thanks!

I just read about a dreaded keyboard bug where certain letters won't type (usually the first letter) and this problem has been ongoing for years, it seems and Apple has little to no interest in fixing it. A keyboard that won't type properly sounds like a deal killer to me. I don't think I can buy one knowing it's more than likely going to be screwed up in that department. Still reading the thread on Apple's site, but it doesn't sound good (LOOONG thread).

They'll do it for you by request ( phone order, of course ). The last I knew it was $39.95 plus the part. I can't find anything to confirm it on their web site, so you'd have to ask. Anywho... A 200GB Seagate Momentus 2.5" ( notebook ) SATA drive with 16MB cache and running at 7,200RPM is $210 or a Hitachi Travelstar with the same features for $205 or a 250GB Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" ( notebook ) SATA drive with 8MB cache and running at 5,400RPM for $193 all from MacMall. The last two being some of the best in performance. The 250GB has such a high data density, that it should be notably faster than even the 120GB stock drive at 5,400RPM. While Hitachi may have slightly better fperformance and slightly less power consumption than comparable speced Seagate drives, Seagate's 5-year limited warranty is always nice for those who plan to keep the machine / drive that long.

P.S. If you can replace the drive without breaking anything or otherwise making it obvious that you serviced it, your warranty will be fine. Apple doesn't use any kind of warranty void sticker on 99.9% of components or the casing. Judge for yourself if you are able to do it without issue.

Hi
We're all excited about our new toys...Oh...I mean tools. Anyone have their tracking number work who ordered from MacMall on Friday? I'm looking for an ETA. :D

I just called them and after waiting over 12 minutes to talk to someone, they told me they can only upgrade the memory (for 2x what I can do for myself by ordering the chips from Other World Computing and getting a $20 rebate back on the original chips) but they CANNOT do it for the hard drive as this will invalidate the warranty (odd for an authorized reseller; maybe they're not authorized repair/service, only reselling?). They said I'd have to do a custom build from Apple and wait until Apple ships it and no rebate would apply to the system (defeating the entire point of buying it right now).

So.... I guess I can either buy it now and take it to someone like CompUSA and let them put the hard drive in or do it myself and hope for the best (sigh). I don't know why everything always has to be so complicated. If they had just designed the thing like they did the Macbook, you could easily change it yourself without voiding the warranty.

I am an Amazon Prime member and decided to get next day air on this offer.
Since Thursday was the holiday and we then have the weekend, I will be getting it on Monday (for $3.99 thanks to my membership).

I just checked the tracking and it is already arrived at the local distro center awaiting to be put on a truck on Monday.

Amazon Prime may be $80, but it is definitely worth it (IMHO). I only use it a few times a year, but the free second day air and $3.99 Next Day Air balances out over the year for my purchases.

News to me. Anywho.. The MB hard drive is so easy to get at. :) Great design!
