As far as colas go, I prefer RC above coke and Pepsi.

But since I'm a mountain dew addict, like so many others have already said, I sure hope this promotion is for MD as well.

And where this promotion will be profitable is if a lot of people download iTunes to get their free tunes and then buy more once introduced to iTunes. So you people who plan on getting all the caps from their friends would benefit apple much more by getting their friends to download iTunes and spend money.

Pepsi

My entire family tree is addicted to Pepsi. I drink about a 6-pack of diet pepsi every day. Woo-hoo bring on the free tunes!

This is great!

Both my boyfriend and I are Pepsi and Diet Pepsi drinkers respectively. He's been on a Pepsi Twist kick for the last year or so, but I'll have to make him switch back to regular during Feb and March. :)

Guys, this 100 Million give away isn't really going to help the 100 Million downloads goal all that much. First off, the campaign doesn't start until Feb. 1st, which is only a month and a half away from the the end of the goal year. They aren't giving them all away in the first month. Plus, not sure if they'll count this in the 100 million goal.

Also, in terms of the cost to Apple and Pepsi, Apple may have just given up it's share of the .99 cents. That means each song ends up being roughly .50 cents for Pepsi. The exposure is probably enough for Apple. Free ads made by pepsi, and people downloading free songs encouraging them to buy more.

Next thing you know, we're going to see commercials with some stoned teenager on a white background telling people about how she switched from Coke to Pepsi.
"And then it was like, uh 'psshh!'... and then it was... flat."

Hehe... last time Apple and Pepsi had anything to do with each other, the former was trying to steal the latter's CEO.

I wonder what the superbowl ad will be...

:D LOL What a great post! Maybe John Sculley will reprise Bob Dole's Pepsi ad!

Interesting side note:

I installed iTunes on my PC tonight, and when I tried to access the music store, it said "unable to access music store, there is not enough memory available. There was an error in the music store. Please try again later."

Not sure if this is an error with windoze or with the store being flooded?? Hope it's the latter because it's probably more the first :)

Windows iTunes

I have no problems with iTunes or browseing the store on my PC. :D My PC has a 433MHz celeron but apple's requirments are a 500 MHz Pentium class processor or better. I also just formatted and reinstalled XP the other day. So maybe that helps. (no buggy OS yet).

i teach at a high school with pepsi machines.

i'll be having my students give up their caps to me. i should get about 1000 caps a month. could be lots of songs.

yiippppeeeee!!!!!!!!

Since one in three bottles is a winner, you are getting, on average, 33 cents worth of music free with each Pepsi bottle.

I don't know about it counting towards their goal, but the entire giveaway is only 60 days.. so it would be over well before the April 28 deadline.

Ugh. That's like adding insult to injury. ;)

I bet what Steve's really doing is trying to taunt Sculley.
I hope so.
In retrospect, Steve never should have brought Sculley over. As CEO, Sculley fired Steve and then slowly pushed Apple into the dark ages of Sculley/Spindler/Amelio.

I didn't realize that it was over only 60 days. Wow. But I doubt it will count as songs *sold*. Songs *downloaded*, sure, but not sold.

True, but Sculley was a good, or at least an OK CEO to start with. And Steve had to have been gotten rid of at that time, unless you wanted the Mac to eternally lack both a fan and a hard drive. Either that, or we would have had a debacle like the NeXT Cube on our hands. Steve needed to get fired and he needed to screw up a couple times at NeXT before he became the CEO he is today.

Yes, you're right about Steve's unusual ideas for Apple back in the 80's. But if Sculley hadn't become Apple's CEO, someone else probably would have. True, it could have been someone worse, but it also might have been someone better.

That said, near the end of his reign Sculley really started to push Apple in all the wrong directions. He wasn't as bad as Spindler or (shudder) Amelio, but he certainly paved the way for their mistakes and bad ideas.

Sculley had a few good, but mismanaged, ideas, like the Newton. Also, Sculley pretty much burned out. He was a talented CEO and became a second Steve in ways, but he did it for *ten years*, and that's more than he could handle. Of course, Steve's been at it now for five years, but he's shown no signs of slipping up. Let's hope Steve can keep it going.
