Once Apple have left them in their wake, they can only hope to sell enough clones to make up the loss. That's what you get for being greedy little douches. No doubt Apple will turn their next chip supplier into a bigger company than samscum.
Er... make up the loss? Bigger company? Samsung is pretty much a planet of its own. They entered the telecommunications industry when Jobs and Woz were peddling Blue Boxes. They're the #1 electronics company in the world... but also the #2 shipbuilder. For all you know, your Apple hardware may have sailed from China aboard a Samsung ship. SHIP. Samsung Life Insurances(!) is a Fortune Global 500 company.
Yes, surely Samsung will run home to mommy crying.

am all chilled back in my chair

pop corn in hand
see how this plays out

hear my kids telling me about economics class and business strategy some distant future

But Apples bottom line numbers are not as great as Samsung. Rough numbers quoted were 4 million to Samsungs 8 million world wide weekend sales after release date of comparable products. (but this is all speculation and nonsense, carnt believe I let my self get dragged in to this:) )

You just quoted the numbers, but not what they meant: Apple sold about 5 million phones on the first weekend to end users. Samsung signed about 9 million in orders from resellers which then were actually sold to end users over the next two months.

Does this mean no Samsung 830 solid state drive in the 13 inch rMBP?

Or if they are going to dump samsung at least replace it with a non-sandforce SSD.
Go with Crucial. But why not just stay with sammy.

if you are referring to the old I'm a Mac/I'm a PC series of commercials, they worked at a completely different level -- John Hodgeman's PC was funny and sympathetic, and PC users did not walk away feeling like their intelligence was insulted -- everyone on both sides enjoyed those commercials. As for the Samsung ads, they are clearly painting iPhone buyers as lemming morons and the ads end up insulting them. People do not like being insulted by companies trying to get their business.

Interestingly, I found the last Samsung ad that I saw as "appealing to lemmings", in the sense that only someone with the brain of a lemming would fall for it. Who would buy a phone because some "actor" who most likely is a barista in real life to pay the bills tells you that the big screen makes it "cool"?

Some negatives for Apple but no choice

By abandoning Samsung, Samsungs chip manufacturing lines will now be free for their own use, and other Apple competitors. Apple was able to hog production lines, which has given them a big leg up on the competition.

But, with Samsung using their proprietary knowledge of Apple's products, Apple had no choice. Samsungs attempt to create a Chinese wall, so to speak, between their chip division and their product division was clearly too little and far too late.

Apple has a healthy relationship with MS and, if anything, it's Google who did the bridge burning when they developed Android while leaving their CEO on Apple's board.

Apple seems to have excellent relationships with a number of players - Twitter and Facebook, for instance.

You do realise that Twitter and Facebook are not business rivals so of course they will have an excellent relationship with them.

The "healthy" relationship between Apple and MS came after a huge courtroom battle between the two companies back in the 90s.

They were not always friends. Hardly.

It is really interesting to see how some people on this forum think that somehow Apple and Microsoft are great american buddies, looking out for each other's backs.

Looking back at history, I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years from now, people on this forum will be talking about the "healthy" partnership between Apple and Samsung whereas Microsoft is back to being the "great evil" company that back stabbed Apple after the release of windows 8 way back in 2012.

If that were truly the case - then why does the iPhone out benchmark most if not all of Samsung's devices.

If Samsung really had this knowledge - wouldn't they make sure (even using Android) that their own version of chips/devices outperformed their rival?

The international version of their S3 (with their quad exynos chip) outbenchmarks the iphone 5.

I have to wonder how long it will be, before Apple finally severs all business and manufacturing ties with Samsung. They may have a difficult time finding another quality vendor or doing their own work on displays for their products.

"Apple is threatened by Samsung’s rapid rise. Apple is excluding it from major projects. However, it can’t completely wipe Samsung from its business partner list,’’

Nice spin!

Where's the spin?

Are you saying that Apple isn't threatened by Samsung?
Apple isn't excluding Samsung from major projects?
That Apple can't wipe Samsung from its business partner list to date?

What exactly do you think is "spin" ?

Any potential partnership between Microsoft and Samsung will not be anywhere as big or significant as the one between Microsoft and Nokia. Nokia makes the best Windows Phones thanks to the exclusive partnership and they will have Microsoft's priority for a long while.

At this moment, Samsung needs Apple a lot more than Apple needs Samsung.

Care to explain how? If Samsung stops making chips for Apple, where do they get them from at the same price?

Samsung should just cut em off.

In case you didn't know, Samsung is a giant conglomerate with several business units. The division that makes components (e.g. chips, screens) is separate from the division that makes smartphones. They are completely separate, meaning they make their own profits/losses.

I'm pretty sure the head of Samsung mobile has begged the head of Samsung component manufacturer (whatever they're called) to do just what you've described, but the component manufacturing head probably told him to get lost and that if he has a problem with Apple, then he should go work it out.

The competitors.. I assumed you already saw the few Iphone 5 tear down available on the internet and Samsung content is minimal. The only one that they have Apple by it's throat is foundry service for the A5, A5X, and A6 processor. And it looks like Apple got it covered with TSMC for the next generation processor (20nm)...And the current processor needs is covered by existing contract... . Samsung already builded the semiconductor capacity for both their own smartphone, TV, tablet etc.. use.. Now a big chuck of capacity just become available...It is not pretty when those plant has to idle...

Sersiously... Didn't we already know this?

We knew it would probably lead up....... Its like anything.

This would then, affect Apples prducts, from a consumer point if view

Its like saying "your a bully, i'm not gonna be your friend anymore."

Let bygons by bygons, kiss, and make-up..

But, with Samsung using their proprietary knowledge of Apple's products, Apple had no choice.

What proprietary knowledge did Samsung have to share between its divisions, that would've been of use?

Apple buys a few chip types (CPU, memory, amps) from Samsung, and used to buy displays.

Obviously Samsung wouldn't know the case or antenna design, radios, battery size or anything else not related to whatever chips Apple bought. (Although that info gets pretty widespread on the 'net before launches.)

... Apple sold about 5 million phones on the first weekend to end users.

Apple counted sales to retailers in their total. We don't know how many of those sales were counted while still being shipped to retailers, and we don't know how many end user sales there were.

What we do know is that the iPhone 4S got four million sales during its opening weekend. Apple opened iPhone 5 sales in two more areas (Hong Kong and Philippines) than last year and got five million sales in the same amount of time.

Did anybody actually read this story? It seems not. This is a whiny story about Apple designing its own chip. Go ahead, reread the first post instead of just whining about who makes more annoying commercials. (for god sakes people, buy a Tivo, already) And the article itself.

Every single claim made by the author about Apple separating from Samsung is refuted right in his own article by actual quotes from people involved. Talk about FUD, although I'm not sure where it's directed...Apple? Samsung? Chip designers? It's too random to decipher.

Genius reporting. And great reading comprehension here in the forum.

TSMC has proven quite capable for this task when they produced the...well, I'm sure that Apple will be able to maintain supply somehow. Do you really think the plant will have to idle, or the chips will just find their way into other products...And can TSMC provide them as cheaply and reliably as Samsung?

Given Samsung's obvious tendency to copy and steal Apple's designs, small wonder that Apple would want to move away from them....

It's always fun to come in here and read so many posts from people who are completely uninformed when it comes to business. I love how people are painting this as an emotional battle between the two giants. It is nothing of the sort. Apple is sitting on $117B in cash, it's an excellent use of Apple's financial resources to bring more and more of its chip design and fabrication in house. Ideally, with as many resources in house as possible, a company depends less on outside factors and can execute in a much more efficient manner.

This is good for Apple and its stockholders.
