Since Apple can't make great services, since iCloud is always a constant issue, as least their good as something right ? Staying on top.

Even though the feeling of should be what Apple says... in reality......its clearly not, and while i admit this stuff is tough..... Apple only introduces more problems than they fix.

Shipped and sold ara two different things.
Apple reports sold numbers

  • Apple records an item as sold, when it is shipped to a retailer.
  • Samsung records an item as sold, when it arrives at a retailer.
Samdung reports shipped numbers...

Samsung doesn't usually report quantity at all, except when they hit major marks.

Big difference between shipped and sold I might say

To analysts and Apple and Samsung, "shipped" and "sold" are the same thing. That is, they're talking about the "sell in" amount, which is how much is sold to retailers. That's revenue for the phone maker.

What you're probably trying to mean, are items "sold through" to end customers. Neither company reports that, although you can make rough guesses with Apple since they report channel inventory changes as well. See my post #80 above.

You can read a bit more here. What Apple really means when it says it has "sold" a product.

(Note: for simplification I'm ignoring direct consumer sales here. In those cases, they're not counted as sales until they are in the consumer's hands.)

It is not doing poorly; not just as well as it was and still way better than any other manufacturer aside from Apple

Hmmm. Let me ask another question...

If Samsung is not doing poorly, why did they fire several high-ranking mobile execs? ;)

Really?

"Poorly" is relative. This poor quarterly result by Samsung equals an Apple record only 3 years ago.

They are not doing as well as they have recently, but they still dwarf every other androd manufacturer and still have results that are still the envy of many.

So Apple are presently doing better, 12 months ago, it was the other way round, perhaps it will change again? I don't know and you don't know. I would hazard a guess that things might be different come the summer, after a few product launches here and there and not necessarily from Samsung which may eat into Boths performance.

Not to the people at Samsung who lost their jobs.

I seem to remembering some pretty high profile folks have lost their jobs at Apple over last couple of years too.....

When a company employs nearly 300,000 I suspect plenty of folks lose their jobs on a regular basis, even during successful times

They didn't fire them because the company was doing poorly. Every year is a record braking year for Apple.

They probably got fired because Cook cough them telling jokes that made fun of gay people ;)

So, are you implying that those Samsung execs lost their jobs...just 'cause? You know, I asked the question to toy with you. Everybody knows (except for those in denial) that those executives lost their jobs because Samsung is doing...err...not so good lately.

I bought a couple shares of Apple stock a few weeks/months ago at about $100/share. Finally I get another winner after losing a couple through bankruptcy. I wish I could've bought more, but baby steps!

This poor quarterly result by Samsung equals an Apple record only 3 years ago - but since three years ago, Apple has gone from record to record while Samsung has gone down. This year's profit is about a third of their profits one year ago. Imagine you are the boss of Samsung mobile. And you stand in front of your boss and tell him "my profits went down from almost 6 to less than 2 trillion Won". Do you think you'd get a pat on the back? It's _your_ responsibility and you are down 4 trillion? Do you think you deserved one penny of your salary if you just lost 4 trillion?

"Perhaps it will change again"? This is a major trend. And the trend has turned against Samsung Samsung is hit by a double whammy: They can't compete with Apple anymore at the high end, and they can't compete with the cheap chinese manufacturers at the low end.

Apple is doing better now, but it was different 12 months ago - no, it wasn't. Apple has _always_ been much more profitable than Samsung in the phone market. Samsung has just sold more cheap phones at near cost.

Yawn....

You have no idea what Samsung can or will do. I won't question your religion again, I promise

No surprise. My wife and I both upgraded to the iPhone 6 a couple months ago and Apple absolutely knocked it out of the park with these. The iPhone 6 is proof that the post-Jobs Apple can make great products.

Anecdotally, I've never seen an iPhone release (except maybe the first one) that had so much buzz. I've been asked about it by so many people and I'm seeing a lot of Android switchers.

Every iPhone release so far is better than previous

I don't know about you, but I can't wait until Apple is the only tech company in the world. I personally will be beaming with pride when everyone on the planet has an iPhone.:D:D

That won't happen: there always are people looking for a cheap Samsung phone :D

And you do? LOL.

But actually, we do know what they can do. It's all over the news. What they can't seem to do is compete with Xiaomi or Apple. What they can do is report yet another quarter of declining losses. There is no guess work here...no speculation. It is reality.

What will Samsung do? Most analysts speculate that they will not be able to do much to reverse their fortunes with Xiaomi destroying them in the low-end and Apple pummeling them from the top.

Everybody who is looking at Samsung is saying, "uh-oh"...except you. We will not question your religion either, but you better start praying soon.

Obviously comprehension is not your strong point. That is the point NO ONE knows, so we can spend our lives speculating and squabbling over who's conjecture is more right or we could just wait and see. My speculation is, for clarity, is that this is not the demise of Samsung or the rise and rise if Apple. History teaches us that things change quite dramitically, e.g in less than a year Samsung gone from totally dominant to back in the pack. Apple is not immune to the same issues, despite what you might think, although might be stronger or better at dealing with them.

Finally, the Analysts that everyone castigates here somehow are now full of wisdom when it comes to Samsung?

So now we are getting nasty, huh? I'll let this one slide since I know how depressing these news must be for those who love Samsung products.

Exactly. Things changed quite dramatically for Nokia, BlackBerry, and even HTC (thanks in part to Samsung). Apple is not immune to the same issues, and perhaps our favorite phone maker will face difficult times in the future. But the thing is, these "same issues" are happening to Samsung right now. You just can't grasp that fact.

They have to to get it right one of these days.

Look, I don't mean to be nasty, sorry if offence was caused [Ill choose my words more carefully next time] but in all fairness, you continue to suggest things that I believe or say, when I do not. I am not a Samsung "lover" and will reiterate again, that in the absence of having a company S4, I would personally select a 6+ [and with all honesty, it is the only iPhone that has ever interested me]

With regards to my denial of the Samsung's position, I am not denying it, I am, however not ready to believe that they are going to disappear any-time soon. They are still by a country mile a very successful business, not quite as successful as they once were, and presently clearly not having the success that Apple enjoys. It is my firm belief that there has been an alignment of the stars with regards to Apple, which is contributing to this success, namely:

  • Samsung being off its game for the last 12 months & also distracted by new competitors in their home market.
  • Apple entering into a brand new aspirational market [China]
  • Apple finally relenting and giving millions of pent-up Apple fans the big phones they have been craving

I believe that Samsung will have new vigour and Apple will eventually lose the halo effect of the bigger phone, i.e. will 75M folks change their phone again any time soon, I honestly think not.

This time next year China will be just another market, a big one granted and will be a very competive place, not least because of the indigenous manufacturers.

We will just have to agree to disagree and move on.

Wow! That's the most over the top self righteous thing I've read here; and, I've read doozies!

Unless you doing the vulcan mind meld with Samsung, this sentence makes no sense at all...

Also, someone spending so much energy and emotions on commenting is a bit too invested in this to be calling out anyone on their supposed "religion". You know that whole, pot calling the kettle black, thing.

Yes, it was inappropriate and I apologised...point being that there is sometimes an almost irrational religious attachment to what at the end of the day is little more than a vanity trinket that we use to talk to people on. We're all guilty of it at times. Again, I apologise for using an unfortunate term. (@gnasher729)
