Welcome to the MacRumors comment forums. If it hasn’t dawned on you yet please know that negativity, condescension, denigration, and hatred of anything Apple is the norm here. It wouldn’t matter if Apple perfected clean and free energy for mankind. These forums would tear it down and demand that Tim Cook be fired. Or they would claim Apple stole it from Fermilab in Chicago.

With a hearty dose of barely hidden racism and homophobia.

So far only one positive comment out of nine. Saddening that readers have to find judgment towards a simple PR message to help bring this generation’s awareness of all that MLK stood for.
We have schools to bring “awareness.” And also about a million streets named after the man.

What does Tim Cook or Apple do to celebrate Lincoln’s birthday? Anyone? I mean, he only started the war to end slavery. Those evil, white patriarchal men....you know, the hundreds of thousands of white men who sacrificed their lives so black people would not be held in bondage.

Many of us are bone-tired of social justice virtue signaling and identity politics, especially when it comes to Apple. Identity politics and social justice permeates much of what this company does.

Wow these comments are a cesspool of hate-filled immaturity. Hopefully you all can someday find it in your heart to embrace the message of MLK. Tim Cook may or may not be the right person to lead Apple, but MLK would’ve stood by his side to embrace the social and political message he conveys.

If you think the siege at Evergreen was "fringe", then you should also explain other similar "fringe" cases with the Berkley riots and arson, which also escalated to the streets with armed thugs beating people over the head with bike locks, or the Univeristy of Missouri professor who during an occupation of public land felt legitimised to assault students in the third-degree. All of these cases started because of charges of racism, for either "white people not leaving", "hosting conservative speakers", or an alleged "poop graffiti swastika". In all cases group racial indignation was the justification for behaving in a disgraceful manner. If you think these things are fringe you have a very warped definition of fringe, and are in no place to question my use of "Identitarian", which I included with the modifier "left", that I take as self evident. Besides, such a term and its derivatives is being used widely by commentators.

The one thing all these protests have in common is they were not peaceful as per MLK dream. Do you think MLK would want to kick white people out of a university for a day, for contrived solidarity? Do you think MLK would want to stop a conservative from speaking with violence and arson? Do you think MLK would want professors to order other students into man handling a media student because of some graffiti somewhere? Come on we are better than this.
Yes, those are fringe instances and have been decried by liberals overwhelmingly.

Here is one of the biggest "liberals" going. This is what the overwhelming majority of liberals believe from my experience.

If you want to make an argument on the use of a word, don't use a Koch brothers "news" outlet to do so, Spiked, nor a magazine that had Boris Johnson as an editor, to try and say it's "widely" used by "commentators." It's not. "Identitarian" is a far right term used by nazis no matter the "modifier" you put in front of it.

Apple is skin color and “diversity” obsessed. Watch their adverts. MLK: “judge by the content of character and not by skin color.”

MLK would not approve of this diversity madness. Identity politics is toxic; if you (the general “you,” not this poster specifically) buy into it, you’re a simple minded fool.

Lincoln didn’t really end slavery. He supported abolitionists since they were on his side but he didn’t really know how to bring an end to slave labor completely. The Emacipation Proclamation was a bandage solution for states that left the Confederacy but it didn’t become law. The 13th Amendment was enacted after he passed.
You could still honor this day without advertising it as if MLK have iphone xs to sell.
I don’t see any iPhone XS on that landing page.

Actually your answer just shows that you are the one who is clueless. His fight was honourable and just, what it turned into is a victim mentality cult blaming everyone around who doesn't see it your way.

I didn't blame anyone.
I indicated that lumping in BLM with antifa was erroneous at best.
You think just because we had legislation in the 1960's that racism went away?
Do you think that 7 years for the killing of an unarmed black man on film is okay?

Me, victim? Not even close.
But I have been stopped by the police for "walking while black" as a teenager and "driving while black" as an adult.

I suggested the poster understand history and read "A Cross to Bear".

But clearly people here have some pent up hostility and aggression they need to deal with.
Have a reflective and introspective Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Just be clear Lincoln did not have a desire to do anything with slavery.
In his letter to Horace Greely
"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that."

The Emancipation Proclamation freed only slaves in southern territories that the Union did not control.
The Civil War was not solely about slavery, and quite frankly what happened after the Civil War was far worse.
We had apartheid in America for 100 years.
We had the re-enslavement of black men using vagrancy laws that put them in jail for indeterminate sentences with fines that were impossible to pay. We had southern states than made significant revenue from leasing black prisoners to corporations.

The Civil War didn't end the south's addition to cheap labor. They found a more heinous way to get it.
This practice of enslaveing black men for being unemployed didn't end in the south until at least WWII and after that it still continued.

Think about how the cycle works.
You are refused employment by the same people that pay to lease you for mines and factories.
Pretty demented.

So your question demonstrates your lack of knowledge about American History and the struggle for Civil Rights.

It’s great to see these companies honoring MLK’s legacy. Some people today really don’t realize how much their everyday lives would’ve been affected had someone not fought for civil liberties.

For sure. Many here just use this day as another opportunity to cr@p on Apple and Mr. Cook. Every single year, on this day when Dr. King is honored. Very immature behavior.

I absolutely hate the negativity on this site by a few members.

It's beautiful to see Tim Cook trying to do some good in this world when so many politicians are trying to destroy the world. Here in the UK, our country is truly destroyed by hatred and lies coming from the Govt and right wing press. Tim Cook and Apple are a true breath of fresh air. I certainly do not see Samsung or LG or SONY or Panasonic trying to do good for mankind!
Seriously, please spread joy - it really makes a pleasant change.

I agree. There’s a lot of very angry people here. A shame they can’t just this once sit on the sidelines and honor Dr. King’s message and life.

I agree with the rest of your post but this isn’t true. Everyone, everywhere wants cheap labor. When Blacks moved North to take jobs they weren’t any more culturally welcome there. But businessmen wanted cheap labor. Throughout this country today businessmen are happy to accept all the cheap legal or illegal workers they can get.

Also, the North was happy to use child labor in their factories. And everyone used child labor on farms.

The point is there was nothing particular to the South in wanting and using cheap labor we today may consider immoral.

Very true.
I have never understood the need to hang out on forum just to spread negativity. I am Apple fan and I don't mind criticism that Apple deserves. Unfortunately, MR in the past few years has become a playground to spread so much hate on anything Apple does, good and bad.
Weird times.

I'm certainly not an expert... But I think it has to do with many unhappy people feeling they have little power or success in their lives. And the opportunity to hate on someone or some entity, that is enjoying some success or doing something positive, provides a short-lived blip of power that's otherwise lacking.

How insecure can you possibly be that you're this triggered by a homepage picture.

Proud to carry an iPhone in my pocket today! Thanks to Apple for contributing to the community on MLK day.

I can't take Tim seriously with his "social equality" mentality. Yes, it's MLK day. Good to honor this day...but when Tim comes in with any kind of social/historical topic...it's a cringe.

Well he's trying but I agree it seems half-assed, almost like an insult.

What I mean is in Tim's tweets I see ONLY caucasians ... I don't see any mix with any other culture ... kinda really defeats any reasoning for portraying any sentiment or the outright reason for today being a tribute in any way. [EDIT: Sorry was looking at his Jan 19TH Post as that was shown in the article]

Yet someone else showed a tweet with a picture of Obama holding the hand of a toddler aged caucasian walking into the White House! Holding hands yet walking Side-by-Side! This ... is profound and clearly not only properly honors Martin Luther King Jr but also for what he stood for and his message to us all ... UNITY.

Makes a world of difference in perception comes meaning.

Except that's not what he's doing. I get it, you don't like Tim Cook and his equal rights track record. Stay cynical and angry.

"Good to honor this day.."

It's a real shame you can't leave it at that.

Just another opportunity to slam Apple/Cook. Too bad you can't at least hold back on this one particular day.

MLK's legacy and great and all that. But growing up as a young (non-black) boy in the late 70s, Alex Haley's Roots did it for me. That was an epic made-for-television show and it made me realize that it's EVIL to treat fellow human beings as slaves or to treat them as lesser human beings.
