This is what I love about Apple and I have the strong believe and feeling this is not pure marketing but what the people leading this company stand for and believe in.

I liked this kind of advertising under Steve Jobs because I believed in him and where he was going, regardless of how flawed he was.

Under Tim Cook, I don't believe it. I'm not a socialist and i have no personal problem with Apples structure, but how do you balance his 0.05% tax rate outside of America with his "strong belief" in social justice etc.

You realize you can move to a state that is more oppressive if you so choose right? I was for freedom so I moved to Texas.

For the record, MLK day is a Federal holiday.

We do not get paid to stay home today. For local businesses here its business as usual (albeit with less traffic).

As for moving, you are 100% correct and once my kiddo enlists I am so out of here its not even funny.

Normally, I count myself among the most cynical of individuals. In this case, I really can't find a reason to doubt Cook's sincerity. Love him or hate him, Cook's pretty transparent about his social justice stance. Honoring Dr. King fits that profile.

Maybe, but all the political views he states in public sell quite well to the general demographic that buys Apple products.

If Tim Cook is on the Google board in 15 years time will he have quite the same concern with regards to privacy for example?

That's the freedom we have in the US so why not use it. I do not get paid to stay home today either, but hey, if I really wanted to I would get a government job and take less money. I can't blame private businesses as they have enough risk as it is.

No government job for me. I make decent (for me) money to essentially do very little. Every penny not spent on my kiddo or bills goes right to savings. I have 3 years to go and then I am gone.

Growing up here wasn't bad, but I'm going to be an empty-nester soon and since I have no other attachments here (parents both passed away) I can go and jump start a new life somewhere else. Be a citizen of the country so to speak.

All in due time my friend, all in due time....

I wish Apple had no political agenda and social justice goals to pursue.

Agreed, political agendas should be kept separate from big corporations. Apple is here to sell products, don't get it twisted.

I wish bitter men on the internet would not reduce human rights, particularly my rights, to a "political agenda". MLK Day is a national American holiday, and Apple is an American company.

They have every right to honor this great man. Shame on you both.

Most of Apple's political agenda is pure political correctness gone mad, but they got this right. It's too bad most people claim allegiance to the ideas of MLK, but in fact do anything they can to destroy what he envisioned.

MLK was one of the last to envision society where race did not matter and a process to get there without violence. Today, violence is accepted and race is routinely used as an excuse for preference. I'll bet MLK is turning over in his grave. But he was a visionary and his life ended too early.
"political correctness" is at this point a right-wing buzzword used to describe everything that reactionaries don't like.

Apart from self advertising and getting people to view Apples products, I'm struggling to see the connection here between a giant American consumer electronics corporation and Mr King Jnr's death?

CmdrLaForge, Toutou,
Rigth there is your answer to why political and especially social justice goals are for. If you don't give a damn about your fellow citizen, fellow human being and their rights and witnessing inequiality and injustic only to do nothing about it, let alone forget it and forget company's are run BY people of all walks of life ... then why are amongst people on this planet anyway? You have a right to be here just as much as anyone else, that's why.

So you should care vs question why the company isn't just feeding products down any orifices with a wallet attached to purchase it ;) lol.

#MLK had a VERY powerful speach and it wasn't just about In-Equality it was about EQUALITY for ALL ... THAT is what brought about change his vision for fellowship, brotherhood amongst ALL people! I guess you missed that ... shame on you if you ARE an American citizen, I'm a Canadian citizen and I definitely didn't miss this.

Nicely put sir.

Leeching off of great people to sell more. This was awful when Steve did it, and it's awful now. You suck Apple.

I'm sure you or anyone here REALLY know Job's well enough to understand his intent to say it was unbecoming in any nature. But again who really knows his intent.

Then that would make Pepsi, Coca-Cola Co, etc etc etc just as bad right?

So wonderful to see the Apple MLK tribute website on my 3+ year old Mac Mini, my 4 year old iPad and my MacBook air from 2010! Wish they had some new product to buy. I'd even go for a MacBook Pro MLK edition with extra ports and an SD slot.

Really need to fire that Cook. It's almost too late.
I agree. He is so busy touting social issues he seems to have no driving vision for Apple. Just update after update.

Misogynistic behavior and communist associations? Seriously? Like Trump? At least we won't have to wait to see his reprobative behaviors...they're out there every single day.
[doublepost=1484603634][/doublepost]

No. Just humans. Real people with flaws and frailties who manage to thrive, do good and lead.
Jesus was a real human - not that i really want to see a Jesus page on apples site during Christmas. Anyway I like Apple honoring important people.

What specifically are you talking about no vision?

Vision(s):
Simplify and strengthen SupplyChain for Product sources from chips, storage, materials, and evangelize recycling taking heavy advantages of USA (as well as other countries involved in the supply chain) for tax heavens related to saving on wastes and re-use of materials. Ahem another "Social issue" here affects us all on this planet btw.

Works on contractual agreements that when supplychain supplies dwindle that source company's pay a hefty lack of revenue and yet STILL must fulifill the contractural agreement for volume in set times.

Just to name two critical important moves that since 2010 has strenghened Apple's revenues, profits and the bottom line. There is a reason why he was on the former CEO's Q&A Panel on former mishaps like Antennagate (notice he said NOTHING at all just smiled, but was present just in case).

If you think celebrating Martin Luther King is a "direct shot at the incoming administration", then you must have a pretty awful incoming administration. But then of course, you do.
[doublepost=1484600636][/doublepost]

If you care, you might write to Donald Trump and see what he thinks about helping poor people everywhere in the world. Well, they aren't going to vote for him...

Show me other times Tim has praised Martin Luther King on Twitter, or made such a display on their website. I"m open to being wrong but I honestly don't remember.

I am not from the US, but just how important is Martin Luther King that something like 50 years later Apple CEO takes the time to comment on his death publicly and it makes it to the front page of a technology reporting site?

My understanding is that USA killed each in a civil war to end slavery about a 100 years before MLK.

I wish Apple had no political agenda and social justice goals to pursue.

actually, Apple's political and social justice is whats pushing to keep our info private online, which is nice.

I almost crapped my pants at the "... MacBook Pro MLK edition with extra ports and an SD slot." Bravo! :)

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrates the man's birthday, not his death.

Meanwhile back in the "real world" Trump prayed with Martin Luther King III to our Heavenly Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in whom many of Apple's core leadership rejects but MLK trusted in for deliverance from God's wrath.
Please stop trying to rewrite history in order to make merchandise of them.
What's next? When Billy Graham dies Apple will do a front page tribute of how he was forefront on promoting alternate lifestyles?
The "reality distortion field" that Apple created was never intended for social issues.
This is why Apple needs to keep out of social issues and get back to business.

Nope, "political correctness" is telling lies to get your way. You know that lie that everyone that does not agree with you is a racist, homophobe, etc.

That is a little Naive! Why do people buy Apple products, they are no cheaper, they aren't really any better but they are cooler. Apple knows that great tech isn't enough, they know a strong sense of focus on solving consumer problems isn't enough.

They know that their brand is everything! Their brand is on their products, billboards, tv screens, movie screens, their brand is Tim Cook, their brand is their store presence. Their brand is everything they choose to associate themselves with, and they associate themselves with which are only ever liberal, free minded, socially positive ideals. MLK is the most positive icon of 20th Century American history. They identify strongly with MLK's brand and thats great marketing.
I happen to disagree. I actually don't stand for 90% of the things Apple stands for. I buy because of the products and the quality I receive, and nothing more.

And I wish that people who said things like this realized the fact that they sound like racist, uncaring jerks who are against equal rights for all.

But hey, maybe they do.
[doublepost=1484602976][/doublepost]

It's upsetting and discouraging that people actually have an issue with this... honoring an individual who fought for basic human rights. It's not surprising, though, considering so many people have an issue with ANYONE who does ANYTHING to protest against inequality. The power of ignorance is amazing to me.

Self righteous and name calling much?
