i could care less about a video ipod, my 40GB ipod is all I want from Apple beside their operating system.

I really wish they'd focus on OS X and their computer line, where are the tv commercials for the imac and mac mini? When will they take advantage of the so-called halo effect of the ipod? The ipod won't stay 'cool' forever, so how about bundling a mac mini and an ipod for a special discount this xmas, and running ipod-like commercials from now on, showing both products working together?

very frustrating!

they're giving ipod minis away to students who buy a mac (except the mini i think). i think this promotion could turn out very well for apple.

while siting and thinking about previous post, I came up with something. People are comparing a future video iPod with the PSP. What if Apple intends to aim at the PSP a little. Remember the post by apple for JAVA programmers for games and such. They could be building a game library for iPods. What if they open a link on their website or iTunes for downloadable games. Then they can be synced wirelessly via Buetooth 2.0 from your Mac. who knows but I am sure there are a few games out there that can be played with the click-wheel. just a thought.

Can't say I'm all that excited by the ability to buy a music video from iTMS. There are a couple I'd be interested in picking up, I guess.
Looking ahead, I'm much more interested in having the ability to hook my iPod up to a TV and playback video content stored on the hard drive. If this is a necessary evolutionary stage to get there, bring it on.

*shrugs* There is nothing overly special about this other then its purely groundwork for the future. There have also been rumblings that Apple has been in talks with major studios. (Think I read that on engadget, I think.) So if the first iPod Video does show up this Fall along with an iTMS update for music videos I'd fully expect the movie store to show up in a year to a year and a half. However the problem still remains: bandwidth. Depending on where Apple intends the movie to be played it could be a pretty small file (Mobile device) or a huge file. (Video out to a TV.) In either case Apple would have to seriously consider distributed files for a movie store. Probably scattered thoughout North America. So when someone downloads a file off of the iTheatre store several streams are established speeding up the download. Obviously this would cost Apple WAY more in terms of infrastructure costs compaired to iTMS sooooo. Could they do it? Yah. Could they do it with quality? Yah. Could they do it with quality without becoming a money backhole? *shrugs* The Internet2 can't get here soon enough.

Nor me, photo's hooked up to a TV fine...but streaming movies from your iPod to the TV, it'd be easier to drag a DVD along and probably better quality/extras? I know a few guys who have dropped all their DVD's into a Windows PC and interface it thro' their LCD projector/plasma screen on the wall, but can't see folks using an iPod for a DVD collection.

I suppose if you can playback video, that would cure the advertising conundrum...low cost alternative...make a hip Apple advert as a free download and share/show it amongst your friends. We already get 'spam' from Apple about iTunes releases, new products etc, what's a little bit more?

I sure as hell would buy some! MTV sucks and I wouldn't mind some old Pink Floyd music videos for my collection.

That's the rub of it. If Apple provides only new music videos its going to bomb IMHO. (Yah there are some good ones out there but there is a heck of a lot of crap.) But if they provide old school classic music videos. DAMN. I know there are a LOT of older videos I would LOVE to get my hands on.

Imagine having to watch "Lord of the Rings" on an iPod Mini color screen - 1 inch..... Yoohoo. What a treat :p

But hooked up to a 50 inch Plasma showing HD quality should rule maximum.

Music Videos don't interest me. I've already seen Sledgehammer, and that one Palmer video, so that more or less takes care of that.

But, put me in the stack of people who'd like to put videos on their iPods. All those little funny internet vids like the original Tripping the Rift, would be fun to show in bars.

And, I'd also sign up for a full-on Movie rental service. Not quite sure why Apple hasn't gotten into that more. Perhaps they have their hands full with music.

But sure, an iPod, with video, that you can plug into the TV and play, or you can just play on the iPods screen. It's been said a million times.

dudes.... watching the matrix on a 2 inch screen.... *think*.... if this does come about... a totally new ipod line must be introduced...

my thoughts:

Music videos: Free to watch AND bundled with the actual songs for 50 cents more. (or better yet, that automator script does not work anymore that allowed me to save music videos from iTMS)

Video Podcasts: Bring them on, free

Movie Trailers: Open them up for saving in iTMS

Movies/TV Shows: Now is not the time for either, however 30 minute tv shows offered as podcasts each week for $4 a month could be kinda cool. TIVO for your computer, except it's actually tv? Think of it, every episode of Family Guy on your computer to watch whenever you want? . . . Legally.

I guess my biggest gripe is how you pay for QT Pro in order to save videos but it still will not let you save some things Apple puts up. I think since Apple's going this way with video on iTMS the saving for QT should really be opened up as standard, possibly full screen as well. They added more than enough in QT 7 to make pro worth it.

I have in interest in the iPod Photo. Agree that $1.99 is high for the video. Advertising should come into play with the pricing. That is why a movie trailer is free. Will just have to see what kind of deal Steve will negotiate.

I know what you're saying. A week or two ago I was watching VH1 and they showed Chili Pepper's "Under the Bridge" and I saw the director was Gus Van Sant (Cannes Winner 2003 for Elephant, great depressing film) and if they had a music video archive I would like to see if there were any other special directors for videos as well. Who knows who did videos the further back you go.

Apple's the market leader, so they don't get to take big risks on things like the ipod. they have little to gain and much to loose, and it could be really bad publicity, too. Everything people know about from apple these days is a success, except perhaps the ipod photo, but they've hidden that one well enough.

And, remember, an ipod video is a risk. Nobody really knows if people will want to watch on such a small screen, if people even want portable video, b/c you aren't going to do it while jogging, now are you? And if they make a large screen, it's a lot of money, a lot of risk, a lot of lack of portability, and a serious embarassment if it fails.

Oh, and most important.... remember when other portable video/mp3 devices were coming out, like 6 months ago, and we were all a little nervous the ipod would lose it's crown? Lots of hype about them, and speculation that apple would join or die? Yeah, who's even seen one of those devices, that bill gates himself said was the wave of the future.

Like with the ipod, apple is going to wait until the market is on the cusp-after a decent selection of video players become available, when bandwith and storage reaches levels that can easily support video, and they're just starting to reach the mainstream. Then, look at what's out there, and how it should be better. Make it right, but do so just before the market takes off and just before other quality devices get out there.

That's apple's plan. There will be a video capable ipod, but it will not be now. Only techies own video players now, and that's not a big enough market.

For myself, this is a much better idea for a video based iPod. Watching movies doesn't seem to make sense to me, but being able to watch a 3-4 minute music video would. Plus, it keeps the iPod as a music player.

I would buy Fatboy Slim's Weapon of Choice with the dancing Christopher Walken. And the new one with Jessica Simpson washing a car in her pink bikini.

They are commercials not product

For cripes sakes... Videos are commercials for the songs, not product in and of themselves. They are created to carve out mindspace so that people will BUY THE MUSIC, or BUY THE ARTIST, certainly not to buy the video.

A concert maybe. A truly artistic montage. There have been only a few videos that have pushed beyond commercial. And even those were commercials.

People will and do buy music to be the soundtrack of their lives. Videos are transient and certainly not worth more than the track.

I hope they do more than just 'promos'. If they've got any imagination they could use it for 'live performances', special one-offs and such. $1.99 for a music video is a little steep.
Yep.
Also, don't forget that there are many iPod users who dislike MTV. They might not care about teen videos, but they might like to get videos from bands long gone.

Indie bands can make a little promo video in their basement or backyard (using Apple apps off-cause) and try and sell them just like their songs.

Music videos is NOT just MTV/VH1.

There's nothing ideal about video/movies on an iPod.

Except that many people already watch sitcoms on their cellphones while travelling to work. So, I think it's something that is clearly going to be on the rise - and especially if all it takes is a firmware upgrade to existing iPods (and let's hope so).

Imagine downloading the nightly news from the previous day and watching it en route to work. Or MacNeil/Lehrer...or Charlie Rose...now that is of interest to me.

Oh man! That iSight is a neat little camera. Podcasting goes video would be an interesting evolution. There has to be an interest for that.

I thought I heard somewhere that there is already some video podcast out there. I'll do some research.

EDIT: Yes there all ready Video Podcasts, Check out: Trucker Toms Movie Review of White Noise with Michael Keaton. If you want to find more video podcast search for: video podcasts

PS- The won't transfer to you iPod in Audio or Video form.

Having it on your iPod is just a little extra, if it happens. The videos themselves--usually played on your computer itself--are not just ads to everyone. Some people really enjoy some videos. SOME (emphasis!) are quite artistic, and fun to watch for your favorite artists. I wouldn't pay a LOT for them and I wouldn't buy many. But I'd pay something, and I'd buy a few.

Nagromme you have changed my opinion. I was a nay sayer regarding tiny vid screen, but viewed as an extra, a little extra, works for me. It's a darn good idea, and hilarious that formerly free music videos could be a source of revenue! I'm saving my pennies to get one this Christmas.
Next bring on the games - but gamers are likely to be a little more critical about screen size etc. How 'bout an ipod BIG BOY - a new line with a large screen..... or perhaps the ipod MAX....

EDIT- One more thought - how will video affect battery life? I imagine it will suck power big time,,, anyone have experience with similiar issues ?

People are reacting as if this is the first time music videos have ever been sold to the public. Go to your local DVD shop and check out the "music" section. You'll see tons of DVDs which are collections of music videos. The same music videos from MTV. The same music videos that the iTMS currently sells/bundles.

One might also say that singles played on the radio are commercials for the album. Why would anyone buy a single?

I think more that a new addon would be needed. The thing simply can't be an all in one device without seriously impacting the portability of the device. Unless Apple wants to give up the notion of portable, pocketable music in the iPod video they are going to have to do something different. My thinking is a modular device. You get an iPod photo that we all know and love but the package comes with an optimal sized device that probably looks like a subnotebook. Or subsubnotebook. Really small.

Something like this:

movieplayer.jpg

But a lot slicker, a lot bigger, and it would feel like one device when they are joined. And doubtlessly it will only work on the iPod Video just like the iPod Photo adapter for cameras only works on the photo. *just my WAG* You mileage may very on it.
