I agree there is some kind of market here. But pricing them at over twice the price of the song seems absurd. Have Apple suddenly lost their negotiating skills with the music industry?

Doubtful, more likely a question of Apple wanting profit, they probably won't as many music videos as actual songs, and also the fact that the industry has now seen that Apple can sell through the store. Don't forget when the music store was first negotiated there really wasn't anyone else and the music industry probably never thought it would take off like it did.

I don't think the next generation of iPods should center around video capabilities. What we need is iTMS music vids, firmware upgrades for all colour iPods to play video and then, seperately, release the multi-media player/device Apple have almost certainly been experimenting with behind the scenes.

I think Apple has got the image and the skill to produce a decent multimedia device at a reasonable price, but to mix that with the iPod would be stupid, and Steve knows this.

Who the hell wants to buy music videos?

Can't see where that would be safe to watch while I'm driving in my car. What am I going to do, hold it up in front of me?

for awhile i've always been...not against, but not really for a "video ipod" i figured it would be a feature I wouldn't use that much. but the more I think about it the more I would like it. I embraced the digital music revolution early on and I think if i got going on digital videos I would like it very much. And since the screen on the ipod photo is so much better than I imagined they could make a color screen it makes it more worth it.

i think it would be cool to watch movies on your ipod on the plane, or take your ipod to your friends house to watch a movie or show that you have on there. (making shows available to buy and download, thats were i think a huge market is. They would be affordable and it wouldn't take up as much space as movies.

if apple becomes the new MTV I'll switch to pc period.

PLEEZE.
wifi vpod with video chat.

It also spawns speculation about video-capable iPods as well as the possibility of Movie sales in the future.

Yeah, speculation is the word. I seem to remember a couple keynotes ago that this would not be the direction they would go. Correct me if I am wrong (I know you will). Anyway, I thought MTV died years ago.

Also, how long would it take to download something the length of Return of the King... on 56K?

a few answers:

1) Wireless iPod for networks
2) Wireless chatting on iPods w/ keyboard connector
3) Better yet, wireless chatting that comes directly from brain waves
4) iPod Movie Mini
5) FM RADIOS IN THE FRIGGIN THINGS!
6) An iTunes Gift Card worth at least $10/one CD w/ purchase of iPod.

And then in the 20th anniversary iPod 14 or 15 years from now: gapless and cross-fade playback.

Does anyone else see only 47 music videos in the Library on itunes? What's going on???

I see 574 videos when I click on Music Videos from the main iTMS screen. Settle down, Beavis!

I don't think apple will jump into full movies right away. because downloading would be a pain. Then storage, these things will add up fast. How much would they charge? you can get alot of DVD's around 10 bucks(except for newer movies and those run from 15-22 dollars). Okay what if the created software to rip DVD's onto your Mac. This is possiable, howerver, how would they keep people from renting movies and ripping them onto their computer. Same with people using NetFlix or anything of the like. The movie industy have been crcking down on stuff like that.

This is why I think that Apple is waiting for the music videos to test the water. As soon as they strike a deal with the music industry we will see them selling videos and still including nice little videos bundled with whole cd purchases and other single deals. Again I think that the current iPods will be able to play these but alot of people will buy these and watch them on their Laptops and Desktops. I know tons would like to buy music videos(the new jessica simpson video anyone). This would help to pave the way to a more robust machine for apple down the road.

I think a device similar to the designs that people are coming up with that flips open. but has the normal ipod stuff on the outside. when it flips open it is like a mini laptop with a keyboard. Kinda like the Nokia phone that does the same but the same size or a little bit bigger than current ipods. this is because it will have chat and webbrowsing and other goodies.

Right now, however the videos are just going to be marketed as an extra. Until it catches on. who knows, I was just thinking outloud.

I am with you on this! :D

did anyone notice the videos are simply another draw to iTunes? you can watch most (all) for free (full length)

hell, when was the last time i could watch an Elvis Costello..VIDEO! Death to MTV, long live Apple.

The current iPods need nothing but a quick firemware update and they'll play videos, the only reason they can't right now is because Apple hadn't got around to fixing deals to get music vids up onto iTMS.

It would be nice if they can strike a deal with groups like MTV to make available the really creative videos from the 80's, when bands were treating it like a new artform instead of a cheap piece of self promotion.

I'm thinking of, things like, Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, Art Of Noise's Beat Box (Diversion One), and Tom Petty's Don't Come Around Here No More.

(BTW, does anyone know where there isn't anything by Art Of Noise in ITMS?)

I wish they would just get these things out and have the music video/ hopefully tv shows too/ maybe movies available for download. I keep waiting to get a new iPod because it seems like I will get an outdated version otherwise, but by now I have been waiting too long! COME ON vPods!

That's the Internet connection speed of a few people that aren't in Apple's core demographic.

Any movie service isn't obviously aimed at dial up users.. :)

The length of time to download Return of the King over dial up must be horrifying!

Why would anyone pay for a music video to view on a tiny screen when you can see them for free on TV? 1-2 times is usually enough to see a music video anyway, most of them are horrible and boring.

what if the just updated colour ipods are capable of video playback already and we just dont know about it?
makes sense to me.....update them quietly then when enough are sold, let people know they can already use them for videos with a simple update to enable it. :D

The transitions in photo are pretty smooth, so you're probably right. But Apple has a nasty habbit of denying new features to existing models. I know, it's business, but still!

It's curious, though, that when I try and sync a list that includes a video clip I get a message that says I can't sync video to "this" iPod. Carefully chosen language?

Don't assume anything. The iPod has a much broader market appeal (read: mass market) than traditional Apple users and in being so means there are many more slow internet connections connecting to the iTunes store than we may think.

Hang out at the Genius Bar and you will see waht I mean.
