Seriously though, if I ever see "Yahoo Search", or "Bing Search" on my iDevices, I'm out the door.

OMG, run!

Then there's Mozilla and Firefox, all of which got its start with Netscape pretty much, and they are doing just fine these days.

Firefox - If by "doing just fine" you mean losing market-share at a consistently alarming rate for the last 3 years, then yes, things are going swimmingly ;)

OMG, run!

The option is fine, being forced is not! Kudos for the screenshot efforts :)

Edit: Even using anything other than Google for the default would irritate the majority.

This is one of the things I love about Apple and iOS. Because Apple isn't trying to compete in every single thing on the web, they can and do partner with others and everyone wants to be on the iPhone. Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, you name it. I don't have to worry about turf squabbles like Microsoft and Google users are going through on WP and Android.

What are you talking about? iOS has been a giant turf war between Apple and Google. And now I'd expect Facebook to be the next in Apple's sights.

Apple's biggest problem is depending too much on data owned by companies that are or could be competitors; they need to use a lot more of that $200B nest egg to own their data and form their own content relationships.

Oh! Integrated comments section!!! I love trolling their brain dead conservative following!!

I really doubt that the "deeper iphone partnership" that this article talks about is changing the default search provider.

Of course not. But the point is that even if they did, it's not a big deal. People who don't like Yahoo or Bing could just go into their settings and change it back.

UK source, US source.

Anything else, sir?

I really doubt most people actually care what search engine they use, so long as it gets them the results they're looking for. Google's domination likely has more to do with the fact that A.) it's the most well known search engine, and B.) it's the default search engine for most browsers.

Yahoo is the worst service ever. My email has been compromised by them multiple times and I get spam requests on messenger all the time. I really hope they do NOT do this. I would be impressed if they were trying to get rid of yahoo for everything except mail. I mean the weather app is so inaccurate and basic because of yahoo.

Curious how many iOS users even pay attention to what they're using? I mean if the default was Yahoo! or Bing would they scream 'why isn't this Google?' I know a lot of people use the term Google interchangeably with the term search.

Can't argue with you there, fully agree. I would just imagine that changing something that ~90% of people are used to would irritate the majority (who are generally non-techie consumers).

Ya. Those graphs tell me google needs to be investigated by the EU.

oops ! They are.

;)

Touché :p

Also agreed, but I still think it would irritate the majority of consumers who are now so used to a given service, no?

Edit: PS. That wasn't a rhetorical question - genuinely interested in your opinion :)

Apple wrote the App and Yahoo gets their data for weather from The Weather Channel.

Back on topic... I wonder if perhaps if one of the things they're in talks over is integrating yahoo messenger into the messages app? As I recall the Mac version already works with services like YM, so it seems like a logical progression.

What advantage would this have over the existing Yahoo messenger app you ask? Well the iMessage app handles multiple devices better; I can start a conversation on my iPod touch, then move to my iPad and still be able to see what was previously written. Also push notifications aren't only sent the last device that I used. Plus for all we know Apple might incorporate a quick reply feature for iMessage in iOS 7.

Way to partner with a winne. Yahoo is about as popular as Alta Vista.

If you had an opportunity to travel or just bothered to research before emiting brain farts like this you would know better.

Yahoo is massive in many parts of South East Asia. They are still one of, if not, the, biggest email providers in the world.

Having said that, i dropped them long ago because their services didn't measure up especially in the area of security & integration.

I dont mind Apple cherry picking sources of data/services as long as they give me a first rate experience.

Agree. This is April Fools Late, right? Yahoo is poison. Like using Yelp as your main Map info engine; we know how well that works.

Personally this excites me. It means that the iPhone may come preloaded with even more stock apps that I'm going to have to put in a folder and hide 3 pages deep...

I don't mind being stuck in the walled garden, but I don't care to be stuck in here with Yahoo!

I would welcome currency updates in Notification Centre, as well as news updates, but only based on selected personal interests in settings (e.g., national news, international news, business, no sports). If this does go ahead though, I really hope they allow us to hide information that isn't relevant to us. Maybe I don't own stocks, so why do I constantly need to see the ticker when using NC?

In return though, I hope Apple demands that Yahoo improves it's weather service. It's so horribly inaccurate!
