Ok I'm confused. I use Google search on my iPad all the time. I use youtube frequently. I use Google maps on my iPhone. I don't use gmail but I'm guessing a fair number of iOS users do. How exactly did Steve screw things up re:google? Considering Apple and Google are direct competitors in the mobile space (and Google is getting into hardware now) it makes perfect sense that Apple wouldn't want to be dependent on Google for all their services.

If we're going to fault Steve for something it should be for not investing enough in services - iCloud, maps, Siri, etc. NOT trying to break away from Google. Apple having to be dependent on their biggest competitor seems pretty pathetic and embarrassing. Where Apple needs to throw some of their $140B is in the cloud, on services.

If you actually believed any of what you just said here, you wouldn't own any Apple products. You'd stick with Blackberry since they're the quiet ones not out to "dominate all the things"

Every company wishes it could dominate the market. And one must remember that once upon a time Blackberry did just that. Blackberries were the hit thing before iPhones! Every teen had to have one so they could chat with their friends over BB messenger.

Weekly the "buzz" shifts to another product or project. "Apple's going to do this" or Apple's going to do that" is not playing as well as they would like it to.

Who is "they"? There are lots of rumors out there but how many of them are even close to the reality of what's going on at Apple right now?

Thats True but completely irrelevant considering the context of the post i quoted and my reply. Yahoo used to be on top too but he still likes them because now they're "quiet" what ever that's suppose to mean.

Yahoo is one of the last companies I'd expect to partner with Apple on anything... Their investing page isn't bad though (but Apple already uses them for that).

Yahoo Fantasy Sports are huge business!

I am probably on yahoo finance or yahoo fantasy sports page on a daily basis.

"They" being Apple. Despite the various rumors, I've read more critical articles about Apple across the blogosphere than ever before. Articles that question nearly ever aspect of Apples operation.

Not in a harsh sense like a make or break situation, but nonetheless they're questioning Apples decisions unlike in the past. These are very interesting times observing Apple in their attempt to transition away from the Steve Jobs Era into a company who no longer is defined by just one person.

It's been proven time after time, when a company is lead by a highly visible individual, they've got their eggs in one basket. When something happens to take that person out its a big hit to the company.

At Apple time may tell sooner than later.

I don't really get all the Yahoo! hate.

They aren't the pioneers they used to be, but except for an uncharacteristic kink sometime around 2010 (I think) their email has been rock-solid since at least 1997 for me. Gmail syncs a little better with the iPhone but not by much.

They do need to update their other services, Search, Flickr (which is not as good as Picasa) and they are lightyears behind in social networks and productivity, but I do like their frontpage and will check out a news story at least once or twice a week.

I think it would make sense for Apple and Yahoo! to get together. They complement eachother.

iOS isn't a turf war. Google is falling all over themselves trying to put their applications on iOS.

And Apple was falling over themselves trying to get Google off of iOS. Apple Maps is the result of that scrambling. It might be Apple's home turf, but that doesn't mean it's not a war.

You win, I bought an S3.

Too bad as of 10 April 2013 NZ Time that Samsung still hasn't provided a version of Kies that is compatible with Mac OS X 10.8 yet. I mean honestly, they haven't even got a Windows 8 certified version - is Samsung really that crap at software that they spend 99% of their time on the hardware and just ignore the software component entirely? does that explain why their Android support is so utterly crap?

NOOOOOO~!!!!!

Yahoo!Weather is complete CRAP! It's ALWAYS off by oh, I dunno ... LIKE TEN DEGREES?????

Yahoos other services are equally crap. Their Mail management and others... I blogged that Apple should be DROPPING them... not integrating more of their crap!

Yahoo deserves to shrivel up and die.

By the generally negative responses, it's obvious Yahoo has an image problem no matter how well it may do the job. Apple's choice to align themselves with this "second class" operation is just another questionable move.

Wrong partnership, one is about quality, the other is not, terribly, horribly and ultimately not.

Ok I misunderstood your comments. When you said "is not playing as well as they would like it to" I thought you meant Apple was leaking stuff. But yes I agree they've not done a good job to change the negative perception out there. And being such a secret company doesn't help either, especially when you go 6+ months without any major product release.

I really doubt most people actually care what search engine they use, so long as it gets them the results they're looking for. Google's domination likely has more to do with the fact that A.) it's the most well known search engine, and B.) it's the default search engine for most browsers.

That's a major reason. Our web group at work runs a Google search appliance. Before that it was another search engine (I forget which one). After involving pilot groups in testing both search engines, they went with the Google appliance despite the other one being cheaper and producing the same results and sometimes the other one produced more desired results for the content owner. But the google name is what won.

Another example of perception over reality.

Like post #7. And I'll add their security appears to be stupid, overzealous on the wrong things. And just getting to Mail means you have to know the right path to find the damn page. Why isn't it the home page or at least a portion of it? Christ, what else would people be logging in for at first?

If you are looking for Yahoo's email: https://mail.yahoo.com I use yahoo mail for my public stuff like web site registrations, purchases, etc. I can't remember the last time I went to yahoo's home page.

No actually Apple was improving its product by kicking out the built in Google Maps app that Google did not allow basic features like Turn by Turn navigation for but still wanted to be able to collect data on users with.

After Google was kicked out, they had to come crawling back with their tails between their legs and add turn by turn navigation anyway with even less opportunity to collect data on users and a drastically smaller user base now using their app since the majority of people use and prefer Apple's Maps with its better turn by turn navigation, integration with Siri, and built in support for 3rd Party developers.

Google is basically left fighting for the scraps.... the few people in countries and areas where Apple Maps isn't built out yet... and that number is dwindling as we speak. I'm in the U.S. and I don't know anyone using Google Maps with an iPhone. Same likely goes for China considering how sorry Google Maps is there compared to Apple Maps. And those are probably your two most important markets.

And basically you illustrated my point. We now have even more choice. We now have both Apple Maps AND Google Maps. Plus now that Google no longer gets preferential treatment other mapping applications like Waze, Nokia HERE maps, Navigon, CG Transit, etc. have stepped up their game on iOS and tons of new ones have popped up. Lots more competition on iOS compared to the stagnant state of competition among maps applications on something like Android.

Competition is a good thing.

Before they get closer, they should fix the password authentication bug that requires reentry when using the apple mail client in OSX.

We have never seen such a similar problem in iOS. But the prevalence if this bug is so irritating, that I'm considering a move to gmail.

Yahoo is getting better and better, even Yahoo mail looks really nice.

i agree - the new yahoo email app is really good.
and yahoo has a ton of excellent content - i think it'd be a feather in apples cap if they could get all of that content on the iphone.

http://mail.yahoo.com or even http://www.ymail.com is somehow hidden or complicated? Most people know how to get there (just like most using Gmail can and do quickly go to http://www.gmail.com or even http://mail.google.com).
