i was curious why extra ports are a deal breaker for people?

ive had my macbook air for 5 years and use it for work as well as i am a software developer.

i have never used any of the ports except for headphone jack.

I develop iOS apps and have my iPhone and other iOS devices connected to one or two of the USB ports all the time for test and debug. Same with Arduino (etc.) boards for testing embedded software.

My wife needs a fully mobile computer for basic work and photos. She is a teacher whose school supplies her with an unusable netbook.

I don't get the negativity in these posts.

This isn't a computer for me but it is perfect for my wife. That is why they still make the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro.

they still make the Air, for now. like the 13" non retina Pro, the Air looks to be on the way out. watch, no update in 2016...

LOL I guess it is a figment of my imagination that I am currently running Chrome with 8 tabs, MS Word, Excel, Mail, iTunes, using Duet to make my iPad a second monitor, iMessage, calendar and pdf editor and am comfortably in the green on memory pressure with a measly 4GB of ram.

I cannot understand how people still think you need 8Gb of ram minimum on a Mac.

Like someone else said in an earlier post; people think they do more on their systems than anyone else. Every time Apple comes out with something new, the argument is always the same with some; "My <<INSERT WINDOWS PC HERE>> system had this 2 years ago, welcome to 2008 Apple!". The same things were said when the first MBA rolled out. It's like Ground Hog Day.

I'm amused by people who think cloud storage is a full replacement for local storage.

It's not. Even with the fastest broadband connections, cloud storage cannot match the performance of direct connected local storage.

More importantly, there are almost innumerable FREE applications that take the place of USB drives. I have more than 100 GB of free cloud storage. I keep all of my data there. I can access it from my phone, my computer, your computer, your phone, literally anywhere I want to. So if I had this computer I wouldn't have a USB drive...and I wouldn't have this problem.

Trying to find a standard USB port (which is all I need) from product photos, there doesn't appear to be any ports at all. Am I missing something?

edit: Never mind, I see it doubles as a usb and charging port. Interesting.

I'm sorry to say, the Dell XPS13 is looking better and better at $800 with more ports, nicer screen, better graphic power, faster CPU and comparable battery life.

It's not OSX but Windows 10 is looking pretty good. I'd have to think a lot of people would be willing to give this a try. Only ONE PORT is a total freakin' joke.

Except that it is horrible and plasticky.

im curious why you need ports on a portable machine?

Hm

In terms of aesthetics, wow. I'm sad to see that Apple is dumbing down the need for Proc power though. Most consumers don't need it, but its nice to get your money's worth sometimes. This seemed to start with the budget iMac.

I'd say this is proof that they've just let Ive do whatever he wants actual functionality be damned...

This really is a machine designed with form before function with the way that the only IO port on it is the USB type C connector. How are you going to use this with an external monitor and charge it at the same time? Are we going to have to buy something similar to a thunderbolt dock from Apple? We're literally going towards the same kind of territory as that Mad TV sketch with the Macbook that had nothing but an iPod scroll wheel.

I'm also slightly disappointed with how they updated the 13" Macbook Pro, but not the 15" models. However Intel hasn't released any new chips for them, so I guess it's understandable.

This computer is a waste of people's hard earned money.

Why doesn't Apple just call it what it is - an ipad with a keyboard.

1 port, no headphone jack, 12 inch screen, weak processor, $1300 base.

Spray paint a computer gold and call it "revolutionary"

That's messed up.

It does have a headphone port on the right-hand-side:

(or you could use bluetooth)

I suppose the accessory market will do well out of selling a universal hub that plugs into USB-C and gives you all the port functionality - USB3, HDMI etc plus charging. Just like all of the versatile Thunderbolt hubs that are not out there after 3 years of waiting.

On the "design" page http://www.apple.com/macbook/design/
there is a link to USB-C accessories but it currently only shows non-USB-C accessories

I wonder why no one is talking about the magnetic charging. I hate that you have to plug in the power cord into a port. A port that can break.

I have the New Dell, non touch and the battery is amazing on it, very satisfied.
On another note, USB C will be a upcoming standard, MSI is starting to offer it on their new motherboards. Apple is always the first to offer new tech, In two years I can see this being standard on all laptops.

Take the cost savings and join a gym?

Oh my only 30% heavier! The world is coming to an end!

With all of you forward looking people here we'd still be stuck with parallel ports, 1024x768 resolution and an hour and a half of battery life.

Fortunately for you there are a wide variety of other computers on the market for you to choose from. Personally, I find a 2lb laptop with a fantastic display that's large enough to do real work on something to get excited about, whether I will be buying one or not (I won't).

Can I Buy a USBC Hub?

Seems to me that if purchase the new MacBook 12in Retina I will need a USBC hub. Maybe Apple will include the hub in the box?
