Because there are exactly zero OS X ARM applications and A9X cannot even come close to emulating x86.

Xcode already compiles for both ARM and x86. All this would require would be a UIKit for OS X, and some lead time to give developers time to update their apps.

I think 8GB might be the limit. Otherwise they'll run into heating and battery drain issues. The Macbook Pro will be the ""workhorse" alternative. This puts the Air line in an awkward position since it has no retina screen and is priced about the same as the new macbook. I think they'll eventually consolidate the Airs with the plain Macbook line (the new Macbook is thinner than the Airs so the name difference doesn't make sense anymore).

I definitely think 8GB is the limit. I read through all the materials on Apple's site, and it is very clear that 8GB is it.

I actually think that is perfectly fine for today's usage. My concern is that I don't replace my equipment very often, and I think this will be a problem for me in two years when the latest OSX comes out and makes everything get slower.

I'm now looking at the Pro version for this very reason - I think it will be usable, longer.

Gorgeous machine, though. I think it will make a lot of people very happy.

Not a fan of the single port. What if you want to plug your computer into your HDTV to watch a movie off it while charging it at the same time? I do that very thing all the time.

This computer is a waste of people's hard earned money.

Why doesn't Apple just call it what it is - an ipad with a keyboard.

1 port, no headphone jack, 12 inch screen, weak processor, $1300 base.

Spray paint a computer gold and call it "revolutionary"

That's messed up.

Dude, your forgot the 8gb ram+256gb SsD.

Ha! That's not even remotely overpriced for the specs! Let's break it down.
Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro (Core M) - >$1000
Dell XPS 13 (2015, Retina-Style Display) - $1300
Samsung Ativ Book 9 - $1000

Apple Macbook - $1299. That's even with a 256 gb SSD which is pretty good, and 8 gigs RAM, which is really good. The design alone is worth the premeium.

Nah bro this thing is underpriced. Apple isn't charging enough for what your getting. Gold spray paint? 2K minimum IMO

Apples most unusable notebook ever. You can't even connect the power cord and an external hd at the same time? Seriously this is extremely bad industrial design. Every designer can design something beautiful completely ignoring basic functionality. When form follows function it's impressive and a great user experience.

And I don't even want to know how slow that thing gets when it has to throttle itself due to the fanless design. This thing is a $ 500,- netbook at best. One of the most overpriced Apple machines to date. I can understand the Apple tax for the design and OS, but with this machine it gets ridiculous. I just hope this isn't the future for all of Apples laptops.

I'm confused. If this isn't replacing the MacBook Air and it's THINNER than the Air, then doesn't the Air kind of lose its meaning?

And that's why it will be gone (both hardware and name) next year. Of course with Apple you never know. Maybe next year we'll get a MBr with a second type-c usb port, skylake and it will be a little cheaper. Definitely on my list if it gets a second port, maybe even on my list with only one port.

You wait until the MBr revision next year with a 2nd type-c usb port.

How can I attach my 56KB modem to the new MacBook. I hate when they make changes and limit my connectivity options.

Now that made me spit out my coffee. It also made me a little nostalgic. Those were fun times. Slow times, but fun times nonetheless.

I am very underwhelmed by this new MacBook offering.

  • No MagSafe
  • Only one connection
  • Really Tacky-looking gold colour (MacBook Pimp?)
  • Inferior storage/processor/memory spec
  • Unrealistic pricing compared to Air & Pro

But the thing that really puts me off is that for that sort of money I would expect the Apple logo on the lid to light up!

My next Mac will be a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina, I think.

There is never a machine for everything. This is designed for ultra portable so it assumes you need it by itself 90% of your timeamd portability is priority #1. I use the 15" rMBP and I don't complain it's heavy and hot and big sick I need the power for my work.

Also in your case you might want to consider AirPlay.

It's already been mentioned like a hundred times that you can do this with an adaptor. It's on the front page.

I wonder if maybe Apple could have done a different move with their notebooks than releasing just one size of the new MacBook and keeping the Airs. I get the point of the new MacBook. It was clear from the video it is meant for portability and integration with other Apple products. So if you need USBs, Thunderbolts, external displays etc, this is not the notebook for you.

I don't think it makes sense keeping the Airs. The new MacBook should have replaced the Airs, being offered in 11 and 13 inch options. I think they'd be a great option for those who need/want more than iPad but don't need/want the MacBook Pro. Though I know it comes down to cost. They can't offer the new MacBooks at the Air prices right now (or they just don't want to).

Thunderbolt wasn't revolutionary enough for the new Macbook.

I am going to call it like this: the new 15" rMBP with Skylake CPUs will come with Thunderbolt 3 and probably the USB-C port too. Magsafe could disappear too.

Here's a summary of what to expect. Note that the next-gen Thunderbolt is tied to Intel's Skylake chip architecture, which isn't due until 2015.

--2X jump in speed. Bandwidth increase to 40 gigabits per second from 20Gbps.

--Displays. Can drive two 4K displays over a single cable, as The Tech Report points out.

--Support. PCIe Gen3, USB 3.0, DisplayPort 1.2, USB 3.0, and HDMI 2.0

--Charging. Support for devices up to 100 watts.

Getting back to the plug: the height will apparently be slimmed down to just 3mm from the current

Another version but 14", some ounces heavier and some milimeters thicker with a Core U, nano-sim, MagSafe, and one more USB-C and I'll throw money at Apple. It would be perfect for college.

Or just put retina on the MBA, reduce the bezels, add a SIM card slot, keep the ports and have it the same size or slightly bigger, and do a small spec bump.

I couldn't care less about the stock price and the investors dont give two ***** about the devices Apple makes. They only care they Apple is making obscene amounts of profit.

Macs are slowly becoming irrelevant for ME. Mac Pro is too extensive given the complete lack of upgradeability, Mac Mini has been killed and turned into a Apple TV running OS X, the new Macbook is not useful to me at all because of the lack of connectivity. The only Macs I would currently consider are Macbook Air (which probably does not have more than a few years to live now) and the Macbook Pro. When SSDs and retina displays are standard on all iMacs I might look at them too.

I look at your signature, and I say, irrelevant, yeah, sure, uh huh:rolleyes:

Ive's fetish is "thinner and thinner" and this determines/ed everyting else.
Oh yes, like the other fetish, the "flat design".

It makes sense to be that thin and light. Now people can actually carry them (not iPads) in their trench coats or fancy handbags instead of super duty backpacks:). Not everyone wants to bring a laptop with a backpack to have a nurdy look. :).

What a wonderful design and beautiful notebook. What a shame, just like the first Thunderbolt port MacBooks, this will have a useless port for external storage peripherals. First there will have to be a USB C to USB adapter which adds bulk - assuming one will be available. Then we will likely wait months if not ears for any affordable USB C peripherals. First there was FireWire, then Thunderbolt and now a generally useless USB C for much of anything except power. :(

As for those who say there will be "tons of USB C devices because it is a standard" - history is not on your side, certainly not in the near term.

You couldn't be more wrong here. USB-C will be on everything in the next year. And yes, there is a type C to old usb adapter already in the apple store for the rare occasion you might need it. Apple has a history of doing this and every time there are ppl that gripe. Typically it all works out.. with some exceptions.

Apple was first to dump floppies, serial ports, parallel ports, cd/dvd drives.... the list will continue to go on... and of course a small minority will continue to whine.

Thunderbolt could have been something special, but like everything Intel does they command you bend completely over on price. USB3 has proved to be much better all around with 3.1 increasing bandwidth to 10gb. Thunderbolt still has a place in the high end market with the likes of Mac Pros with lots of high $$ bulk external storage.

Right, on my portable computer where I generally have to use free wifi connections / my personal hotspot, I want to be storing all of my data in the cloud. It's not like every cell phone carrier in the world gives you extraordinarily limited data access each month.

I'm not entirely sure you understand the type of storage I'm talking about. All of my files are stored locally AND in the cloud. Duplicates. So if my computer is not able to access them...I can from somewhere else (i.e my phone), but if I don't have internet I still have them.

If you're interested, this is the website I use...though I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, there are many similar and probably superior: www.copy.com

everyone here is insane! this is going to be for college students and portability. surfing the internet and taking notes. In the keynote they literally had a photo of college students on the screen for 20 seconds. this isn't being made for anyone who needs power or 3 usb ports.

I was all excited. Then I saw the price and poor battery life. I was hoping 12 hours given the 5 watts and 67% reduced logic board.

$999 entry level would've been nice even if it only had 128GB SSD.

Poor battery life .... omg, are you serious ?
