All these luddites.

Where's the floppy disk drive? What no DVD drive/writer?

The difference is by the time Apple had removed floppy drives or optical drives I had barely used those devices for a number of years prior. I still use multiple USB devices and external displays every day, all the time.

Hopefully there is an usb to macsafe adapter or the power adapter is designed so that there is still a magnetic break point for "the clumsy ones".

It's been a comforting asset.

I agree. But it the port could still break. I know i would be buying of alot of replacement cords.

First I have a hard time believing this is going to happen with any kind of regularity.

More importantly, there are almost innumerable FREE applications that take the place of USB drives. I have more than 100 GB of free cloud storage. I keep all of my data there. I can access it from my phone, my computer, your computer, your phone, literally anywhere I want to. So if I had this computer I wouldn't have a USB drive...and I wouldn't have this problem.

The people who will buy this computer have either figured out how to move their data to the cloud or just don't us USB ports in general. How is that so unbelievable?

Right, on my portable computer where I generally have to use free wifi connections / my personal hotspot, I want to be storing all of my data in the cloud. It's not like every cell phone carrier in the world gives you extraordinarily limited data access each month.

Didn't see the negativity coming. This is Apple's cheapest Retina macbook by far, and it's also their thinnest/lightest to boot.

Isn't this a great deal, or am i blind? I mean, it makes the whole macbook air line obsolete!

Only downgrade imo is the removal of magsafe

You don't visit here often do you? ;)

This guys right. With 5 gig data and NSA snooping all your stuff you can FORGET cloud catching on.

Wow. My head hurts. After reading all the comments in this thread here's what all the gripes boil down to:

"GUYS WHY DOESNT THIS PORTABLE EMAIL/YOUTUBE NOTEBOOK HAVE ALL THE POWER AND SPECS OF A 2017 MAC PRO???? APPLE IS DONE, WORST PRODUCT EVER. TIM COOK WILL RESIGN BY THE END OF THE WEEK I PROMISE"

I can still send emails with that? They didn't make them obsolete yet? That's good news.

Price is within expectations and it ships with a 256GB drive standard. Solid. But how does well that Core M processor perform? Also, what does the keyboard feel like? I'm sure the trackpad is a home run though.

I can't say it's an instant purchase, but I certainly can't wait to try one in a store. :D

The core M processor concerns me deeply. The idea of a 1.1 and 1.2 clock speed is pretty ridiculous. They advertise a high turbo boost clock, but I doubt it'll be realistic because of their fanless design. To me this seems like a glorified ipad with a keyboard and no touch screen. Also having a 1440p display being powered by all of this is not a good sign for any sort of graphical performance.

FaceTime Camera?

I love that the FaceTime camera is 480P......... Back to seeing crappy images from people on the move.... "The TaterCam, only from Apple."

I think many of our problems is that we expect great things from apple all the time. I think from now on, i'm going to lower my expectations. They're just a tech company.

It's not the specs. It's the price. $1299 for these specs is patently absurd. $899, even $999. Fine.

Ha! That's not even remotely overpriced for the specs! Let's break it down.
Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro (Core M) - >$1000
Dell XPS 13 (2015, Retina-Style Display) - $1300
Samsung Ativ Book 9 - $1000

Apple Macbook - $1299. That's even with a 256 gb SSD which is pretty good, and 8 gigs RAM, which is really good. The design alone is worth the premium.

The new MacBook looks amazing, but Im a little dissapointed with the price. I was hoping apple would use this as an opportunity to create a entry level mac and make it more accessible to more people by pricing it at a more affordable price. I think that would be a way for apple to make a real difference, bring the mac to the masses. Appart from that, the new MacBook is not a device im interested in right now.

Oh yeah right, with a Retina too!

Lots of you guys say that this sucks, but let me tell you what, this is actually the MOST IMPORTANT Apple product release in recent years. What Apple does, other companies try to follow.

Here, they established a new standard of 8 gigs of RAM for an Ultrabook, much more acceptable than the 4 gigs mot companies have going.
unless that company is Apple? see MacBook Air.

Another thing that this did was increase the standard storage capacity to 256 gigs of m.2SATA SSD. This is huge because most companies give you hybrid drives or 128 gig SSDs.
Just like Apple does?

The 1-port design is remarkable. No other company would dare to put USB-C in their premiul laptops, but Apple did. This means that now they lead the charge in establishing this as the new data/charging/display port across the board. If you don't like it, get a splitter or dongle. It's that simple.
you are confident on that 'not daring' part? because? every Windows boxen manufacturer will be incorporating that connector in at least some of their products this year. It is new right now, there was no hardware to be incorporated into any one's machine prior to pretty much right now.

The high resolution display was really important for this product because of how low resolution the MBA is. For those of you that say that they should have just made this a new MBA instead of a separate product, you're wrong. The MBA is cheaper and a more streamlined, basic computer for most people. The new Macbook is made for those who want to enjoy high end media on a super thin laptop.

The MacBook Air is a better priced (when specced with matching or better components), more powerful, more capable system when compared to the relatively low-powered new MacBook.

RS-232C to USB3 Adapter

How can I attach my 56KB modem to the new MacBook. I hate when they make changes and limit my connectivity options.

So you just daisy chain an RJ-45 to USB connector to your USB to USB-C connector? Revolutionary!

Pity they didn't engineer a retina display in to the existing, legitimately revolutionary Macbook Airs purely because they want to drive anyone looking for a beautiful screen to the Apple version of the Chromebook. It's not so revolutionary for this thing to have no fans when it's that underpowered.

Come on. I admit the new Macbooks are beautiful but to anyone who actually understands the technology the current lineup is absurd.

You can use previous generation usb's with the usb-c port which is great, and probably the coolest thing about this mac. The mac however is not practical unless you already have an imac, or some sort of desktop pc. It's too weak, too small, and lack of ports is too much to make it a daily driver.

I had too many PowerBooks and iBooks broken by tripping over the power cord to ever go back to a laptop without magsafe.

Also, I am going to need at least one regular USB port all the time.

I guess I'll stick with my 13" MacBook Air.

You're only focusing on specs....which I'm sure is the bottom line for some....but Apple showed all the engineering put into this new Macbook and that's why it's not a bargain basement lappy.

I take back most of what I said. I can't find a comparable weight Core M powered notebook from anyone for under $1199. I guess that's the price of having a 2lb computer.

Wow, that's completely wrong! Not even close to all PC manufacturers are going to phase in Type C this year. Maybe next year they'll include both 3.0 and C.

Nothing short of amazing!

I'm curious about the ram capacity though...

I think 8GB might be the limit. Otherwise they'll run into heating and battery drain issues. The Macbook Pro will be the ""workhorse" alternative. This puts the Air line in an awkward position since it has no retina screen and is priced about the same as the new macbook. I think they'll eventually consolidate the Airs with the plain Macbook line (the new Macbook is thinner than the Airs so the name difference doesn't make sense anymore).

Wow, sure seems like the morons (usual and new) are out in full force, once again. This site has really degenerated in the past few years. Used to be you could come on here to discuss some of the particulars after events with some great technologists, even just reading the conversations and exchanges between others was fun because people would civilly and intelligently discuss the trade-offs and the decisions, both design and technical of Apple's new product offerings, but without so much judgment and criticisms.

Sadly, now MR is filled with annoying negative nellies that haven't the slightest clue about technology or how technology companies work or how to have a conversation where you actually ask a question. Instead, it seems cooler to illustrate your utter ignorance by spouting off your mouth before understanding how technology or the market work. Oh, and let us not ignore the plethora of "I'd never buy a product like this" as if that's something we could all give a good gold crap about!

As for this product, I'd definitely be interested if I hadn't recently bought an 11" MBA (which I love), love the design, can't wait to see how the thing performs, and the new colours are really a welcome addition.

Yeah, it is a shame, really. Especially the people who log on to a forum about a particular product, like the Air or the Watch, or the iPhone just to announce that they think it is crap, and won't be buying one. Why even read the forum at all, then? And who cares whether you buy one or not anyway.

Shakes head and goes back to his shady corner.

You think you are entitled to tell other people whether their purchasing decisions are a waste of money or not. Wow. Completely subjective to each person.
And to bring up the holocaust... how ridiculous. I like Chinese food. If you don't like Chinese food, you are in denial. Some people deny that the holocaust happened. Facts are facts. See how i did that, how i made a stupidly absurd analogy too?
That's not what entitlement is.

Yea the 256gb macbook air with 8gb ram, or the 256gb macbook pro with 8gb are the most realistic options right now.

The macbook airs are significantly faster than the new macbook, so it functions as a cheaper alternative to the macbook pro retina ~$200 savings with the 256gb and 8gb ram model which is probably the best configuration for price to performance.
