Apple today announced that it will celebrate the company's 50th anniversary over the coming weeks, but it has yet to reveal any specific plans.

Apple was founded on April 1, 1976, so the company will turn 50 on April 1, 2026.

"While Apple is known for looking forward, this milestone offers a special moment to reflect on the journey that has brought the company here, to celebrate the people and communities who have thought different with us, and to honor the enduring values that continue to guide our work," said Apple, in a press release.

Apple said its celebrations will recognize the "creativity, innovation, and impact that people around the world have made possible with Apple technology."

"Thinking different has always been at the heart of Apple," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. "It's what has driven us to create products that empower people to express themselves, to connect, and to create something wonderful. As we celebrate 50 years, we are deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey and who continues to inspire what comes next."

Cook also shared a "50 Years of Thinking Different" letter.

The letter touches on the upcoming 50th anniversary and says that "the world is moved forward by people who think different." For those unaware, "Think Different" was a famous advertising slogan used by Apple in the late 1990s to early 2000s.

"At Apple, we're more focused on building tomorrow than remembering yesterday," said Cook, in the letter. "But we couldn't let this milestone pass without thanking the millions of people who make Apple what it is today."

Apple also launched a new "Hello Apple" account on Instagram today.

My issue is that it all sounds like one of their lame PR campaigns. A few videos that are too long (as always), that show too many happy people and a lot of aluminium from way too many angles. A few stories that are straight out of the PR writer's room and then some sugar-coated words about what they achieved.

Nothing "rebellious" about that.

Steve was not a god, as some would have you believe. But he had the genius to convince people to give him their money by creating the illusion that he is selling you the best product there ever was.
Tim and today's Apple aren't even trying to hide the fact that they just want to squeeze every last cent out of everyone.

approaching 15 years of riding coattails and increasing stock valuation.

Mentioned this elsewhere;

You're not entirely wrong, this has been a major part of it.
But you're looking at it in a very one-sided -if not blindfolded- kind of way 🙂

Those very coat tails and stock valuations you mention are why you can buy so many exceptional Apple products, at such a low price. Like my MacBook, which frankly beats anything in the market near or over its price by a good margin; dirt cheap for what it does, we're talking literally crappy Intel laptops at this price range.
And that's just one example.

He made that happen. If you don't sell by the boatload, it's just not possible to lower your prices so much that no one can beat you in the game; and he managed that, your criticism notwithstanding. Fair's fair.
* also, i kinda think this is exactly why he got the position in the first place? Between you and me? This is precisely what was expected of him when the reins were handed over. An insane undertaking, yet one that he pulled off in the end.
** i lastly feel.. hesitant to "criticise" someone who has achieved so much in their life. Don't know about you, but i kinda fall short of the 73KK he's making annually? Maybe you don't, i wouldn't know.

Was it an illusion?
How many companies copied what Apple did and does to this day? Not to say Apple invented everything. But, generally speaking if Apple does it first. Others follow. If Apple does it later (as in not first), they tend to do it better than what came before it.

How many times has Apple been "dead" or on the brink of dying. While succeeding through it.
And what's the excuse? Apple fans just keep propping them up? Only Apple fans? Not new people purchasing their products and enjoying using it? Not the fact that they make products people actually like and purchase. All they do is incremental updates to their legacy products. 10-20% small updates year in year out. That's it.

50 years is an incredible lifespan for a computer company. Who else still exists with them from that time?
Compared to how many are gone. Or merged into other computer companies. And yes, SJ created (with Woz) Apple, and also saved them too. While handing it off to Tim Cook, who has taken it WAY past any expectations. I know people will say that's just valuation. But, you have to have something to sell that gets you that valuation. Can't just be hype folks. Can't just hock old iPods forever.

Happy 50th Apple. And many many more.

If they truly care and aren't afraid of their customers, they should return to public presentations with real people—everyday users—just like in the good old days, without any recorded videos.

Be open to the customers and not only for hocksuckers … sorry YouTubers
