its not like those people have been doing just that since Windows 95 hit the streets

Starting? You think Apple decided to do this… yesterday? And NOT planned to do it over the prior years?
Are you serious? If Apple had planned to do this years ago it would’ve been in the original announcement on how they were going to comply with the DMA rather than one of their long series of steps backtracking. But if it makes you feel better to think this was all part of Apple’s grand plans, then go for it lmao.

Kind of seems like Apple should have run some of their compliance plans past someone. Seems they came out really confident and are going to have to walk so much of it back that it seems more like arrogance.

Of course only nerds like us are paying close enough attention to know all the permutations this is rapidly going through. None of this stuff is even actually available yet but we've already heard at least two revisions.

I really hope Apple just settles down and comes to the table in actual good faith and we can get back to business as usual. Maybe it's wishful thinking but it seems some of these recent public embarrassments are causing them to re-think their approach.

Maybe quietly redirect Schiller's email so it all goes to their lawyer first...

So much backtracking. It’s almost like whoever pulled this together at Apple didn’t think it through. Announcing the bare minimum you hope you you can get away with and then having to change/make more concessions is not a good look.

If these changes in the EU work and don’t cause all the fear porn Apple suggests they will doesn’t that make it harder for Apple to restrict this to just the EU?

And, solidifying Apple’s marketshare in the EU. :) Fortunately for Apple, their growing share of the EU market is set to get even larger. Is this what they meant by increasing competition?
Good for Apple. Seriously. I don’t care if they draw in more customers. What I care about is them not being able to wield outsized market power just because they have a lot of users.

sounds like a massive fail for the user experience

"hey you want our app?"

"yeah but I don't see it on the App Store"

"nah you gotta go to the website and download because we want more money"

"terrible"

"oh and type it correctly or else you might go to a scam site"

this is so stupid
Sounds like you got spoon fed in the Apple garden for too long.

Absolutely true. This whole thing is such a mess, created and brought to you by the EU.

It has worked like that on Mac since forever and it has been just fine.
Clearly someone who has never had to explain to a novice how to mess with the .DMG’s and .app’s.
Most people I know think the dock on the Mac is the same as the applications folder.
Edit: to clarify, I have absolutely nothing against side loading, but to say that compared to the App Store it’s a “just fine” experience for customers isn’t really true.
With the App Store, you click download, and it just… Downloads. Into the right folder, into the right place, no extractions, no dragging and dropping necessary.

Still waiting for real side-loading. I want to be able to install my own software directly built on and loaded from my Mac!

This is the kind of thing that got me into computers, back when all computers could do this because that's just what computers do. "Side-loading" is just Newspeak attempting to put that concept down the Memory Hole.

To be fair most users have no idea where any of this stuff is, or even what it is. "I click the picture and usually it opens the thing where I put in my cat's name." I get called when they can't find the picture.
