To be fair most users have no idea where any of this stuff is, or even what it is. "I click the picture and usually it opens the thing where I put in my cat's name." I get called when they can't find the picture.
Yeah, exactly.
I recently had to explain to someone why there’s a Netflix app on their iPad, but on the Mac it’s website only.
Their response?
“Oh that’s stupid, it’s the App Store. It should have everything that the iPad does.”

sounds like a massive fail for the user experience

"hey you want our app?"

"yeah but I don't see it on the App Store"

"nah you gotta go to the website and download because we want more money"

"terrible"

"oh and type it correctly or else you might go to a scam site"

this is so stupid
This is how app downloads worked prior to the advent of an app store on computers. And, this is how a lot of people still get apps on other platforms. I'm not sure why this is so terrible? Sounds like a good deal to me!

You can already do that with an active developer account.
That's the issue, you shouldn't need to pay 99€ per Year in order to load your own applications on your own device. Everything locked behind subscriptions and software blockades. I should be able to write my own code on my Mac and install the app on my iPhone without needing to pay every year. You want to make money out of your IDE? Sure make a community and a paid version like most companies have (the latter with a full set of features) but Apple just wants to squeeze every penny out of the developers.

It's hard for me to even conceive of a user's perception of the world. A good thing to keep in mind to keep perspective.

If you know what you are doing you never had a problem. That’s not an issue here.
Remember when apps came on CD-ROMs? Maybe this has been Apple's long game? And, why this still sell the Super Drive in their stores!? They're bringing back physical media!!!!!

Ironically, even when I was on Android — a platform that's had sideloading since day one — very, very few people would just install apps off of websites. Almost everyone just gets all their apps from Google's own app store, and if for some reason their phone didn't come with access to it (like with some phones imported from China), you can bet they'd find some way to install Google's stuff onto their phone so they could access the official app store.

Basically, I really question how common this whole "install apps on your iPhone from websites" thing is going to be. :p

Still waiting for real side-loading. I want to be able to install my own software directly built on and loaded from my Mac!
That’s possible since like forever. You can do it from Xcode for your one software or use AltStore or Sideloadly for Emulators and such.

A paid account. I have multiple apps on my phone that I have developed myself with no App Store connection. As long as I keep paying Apple the $99 a year the apps continue to work.
I don't want to publish anything on the app store. It should not cost 100 dollars per year (or 3000 dollars over 30 years) just to have the privilege to install some hobby projects on my iPhone or iPad.

I personally install applications directly through websites on my Android Tablet because they have limited functionality because of Google's restrictions on the PlayStore (like VPNs and AdBlockers) other than that, I install 99% of the applications through the Google Play Store. Apple is just making a drama out of it because of their revenue.

If that's the scenario you are expecting and think iOS developers and users are going to abandon the App Store just because apps will be available from websites, you must have a pretty low opinion of the App Store. So, most iOS users and developers used the App Store just because they had to? There was no meaningful value to it? If so, all the more reason to give iOS developers and users other options.
