Bose is going to be tough to beat and they are cheaper. Apple, you dummies. That's way too expensive. Getting really tired of Apple thinking they can price things however they want to get away with it.
If they are getting away with it, then they are right that they can do it.

Impressive as they look (and from their description) sound. They seem way over priced.

I have a pair of Bowers & Wilkins PX7 and these cost £300. For me I can't see the AirPods Max offering sound quality or feature value that is worth an extra £250.

I also don't like the look of that mesh material on the earcups, it just doesn't look durable. I prefer the leather/artificial leather that are on most other earphones.

Too be fair, it would be an impressive product if it were in the £300 price range.

Or and that so called carry case, it looks pathetic.

I paid $500 for a pair of Master & Dynamics that sounded great and had great Bluetooth features, but which used a micro-USB charge port that broke after the warranty expired and would have cost several hundred dollars to fix. So I don’t see this price as ridiculous, though it all depends on how good the sound is.

When I saw the price of these I had one of those stomach jumping into your throat sorts of feelings.

High-end cans support lossless, and in fact are designed for them. Do these?
You’ll probably go apoplectic but it doesn’t matter. If you take an unbiased look at comparison data, once you get above about 192 kbps the human ear can’t tell the difference between lossy and lossless formats. You may think you can. You can’t. Feel free to look into it, or get some friends and conduct a (fair) test yourself. Which means that a 320kbps AAC via BT5.0 between two native devices will be indistinguishable from an AIFF or M4A/FLAC or WAV or whatever lossless codec has taken over your storage space.

I agree with what you say except that the target buyer won't buy them - Apple are very successful with Prosumer products and there's a lot of people that won't think twice about grabbing a pair just because, even if in terms of audio quality they're more comparable to a set of $2-300 wireless headphones (and frankly I think if these really did push the boat out on wireless sound quality Apple would be selling themselves short with this pricing). Lots of people with lots of disposable income are easy pickings for Apple's marketing team :)
Fair enough. They will sell well but those who buy them won't appreciate that there are better options. It's outrageous that these lack LDAC or some other lossless codec for the price. For 300 I could forgive them but for 550 I want LDAC or something comparable. Most buyers won't care I suppose. I think that's what bugs me the most about Apple.

Yeah, sucks that they give most buyers what they want.

Apple has not said who they’re aimed at. We’ve seen no reviews yet so we have no idea who Apple is targeting.
I'm pretty sure the fancy colors and ridiculous carry case/purse tells us who they are aimed at and it's not audiophiles. And if that didn't tell you the lack of LDAC should... These are aimed squarely at the consumer market.

I assume that when you put them in the case, there is some type of sensor that recognizes such, and the Bluetooth effectively shuts off. Meaning they go to sleep.
And if you don’t keep them in the case, does that mean they stay “on” like AirPods and the battery runs down? Of so, that’s going to probably be a deal-killer for me (even if I could find a way to justify the price).

Yeah, sucks that they give most buyers what they want.
More accurately they prey on the fact that most buyers don't know that they are paying a premium price for subpar tech. A perfect example is the lack of a 120 screen on the iphone 12. Flame away.

I would say the only thing that sucks with these and makes no sense to me, is that the surround sound only works with iPhones and iPads, and not with the Apple TV ! Isn't while watching a movie on a big flat-screen that the simulated surround sound makes more sense ?

So let's get one thing straight on connectivity...the Apple page lists Bluetooth 5.0 as the sole connectivity option. Given that there are no jacks on the headphone, I assume you can only feed AAC files to the headphone. We can discuss the merits of AAC high fidelity, but there is no doubt that the lack of the ability to feed lossless audio/pure PCM audio to the headphones is a major setback, especially for 549 British pounds...
No, you can actually use an Lightning to audio jack cable , sold sperately. I don't know why they don't make this clearer on their website page...

Today I’m trying to decide on the Bose 700’s or the Sony XM4’s and if you told me that’s what I’d be doing the day Apple announced new headphones I would have laughed but hey 2020 am I right?

I tried the XM3 and ended up with the Bose 700 which I love. Don't know if the XM4 is substantially different than the XM3
