Here's to hoping this isn't a memory hog running in the background searching all the time to effectively kill a battery faster. Hahaha. I'm sure Apple got it right though.

I wonder if I should sell my Canon Pixma MX860 all-in-one while it's still in the box, and get a new AirPrint-enabled printer when they come out...

I wish all printers instantly had this feature... Oh and it would also be great to print wirelessly from your computer!

A lot of printers have wifi built in, and if not, you can plug most printers into an Airport Express for instant wireless printing. Much easier than sharing a printer through another computer or something because there's almost no configuration and you can put the printer in a closet or something. I've had the http://www.google.com/search?q=samsung+clp-315 for a couple years now with zero problems. I have had to turn the power off and on literally two times in two years because it lost the connection to our wifi. By far the best printer I have ever had.

Pure Bliss

Aside from my Mac and iPhone, I have to say I also wholeheartedly ADORE my AirPort Express, I'm beyond thrilled about my pre-ordered AppleTV... and now wireless printing straight from my iDevices!? Integration like this is unparalleled. Yeah, I can totally understand the concept of Fanboyism.

“iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC.”

So it looks like as long aa your printer is either on a network already with bonjour, or is hooked to a pc or Mac and is shared, then you should be good to go.

Agreed. Should not need an "ePrint" printer to print. ,Just to use AirPrint.
Correct? :apple:

I'm a bit skeptical on the printer backwards compatibility. The announcement mentions only a handful of current and future printers with a specific protocol and otherwise requires a computer already connected (and presumably configured) with a host computer. I saw no mention of being able to use it with printers that have their own wifi, are on an airport express, print server or otherwise existing independently on a network.

I'd be very happy if I'm wrong, but this seems to invite a) more hardware upgrades or b) dependence on that hub computer Steve's been so fond of for the last decade or so (which is what I do at home w/ an old mini).

would have been nice if it worked with my current HP wireless printers. I'm not about to buy new printers, just for this!

Read more carefully!

It will work with ANY printer that is on your network, no need to buy a new printers.

It is. I just don't like the printer in there with the stereo, taking up space that used to be filled with music.
Airport xpress doesn't rule- it's just a mid level functionary.

Huh - ???..........

Correct? :apple:

Yes, this is a most welcome development -- I am very eager to be able to print wirelessly from my iPad, & shiny new iPod Touch :D I just wish the press release was more clear about whether or not I can use my 3 year old Canon printer, which prints wirelessly just fine via Airport with my Macbook under Snow Leopard -- however, the Macbook has a Canon driver installed in it; that's *why* I can print from the Macbook.

I do NOT want to be obliged to have the Macbook running just to enable the printer, obviously! I want to be able to print (via Airport) without use of any other device besides the iPad itself, running AirPrint. Is that going to be possible? Who (at Apple) is going to explain this better????

grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!.......

Everyone else has probably cottoned on to this already but…

I don't usually go around correcting people's grammar and spelling but this is pretty hilarious and I thought I'd spare you future embarrassment by tipping you off on this...

"cottoned on to this"

The expression I believe you're trying to use is "caught on to this", as in "catch".

Bro, whoever you're hanging around and introduced that expression to you, I'm assuming they're saying "caughtened on to this" (which is still incorrect and also poor grammar) and you were led to believe it had something to do with the fluffy stuff. You need to hang around brighter people.

/end rant.

Now on to your suggestion. Good catch. This could indeed develop into a new notification UI, popping up in a balloon from the app's icon.

Similar to the red push notification number used by many apps, a pulsating badge or the icon itself could indicate that a notification is waiting.

I need a special printer? I assumed it would work with any printer if it was networked with Bonjour?

Probably not because Bonjour only advertises the printer, but the device sending the print job to the printer must have a locally loaded printer driver for that printer. It appears that Apple decided to stay away from loading printer drivers on iOS devices, which will render every non AirPrint printer useless for printing from iOS devices. It may be a more elegant solution than having printer drivers installed locally on iOS devices, but it sure will result in end users having to purchase new AirPrint compatible printers. Hopefully, AirPrint can become available in existing printers through a firmware upgrade, but I would not hold my breath on this one. I doubt many printer manufacturers will go for yet another Apple dictated standard. Finding a decent printer that supports Bonjour is hard enough, and Bonjour has been out for many years.

I am not sure I like this development at all.

Can someone give me some examples of printers I could buy that would work with this new feature?

Or, what specs do I need to look out for if I go shopping for a printer?

No, I don't believe so. The HP printer mentioned will be the first that you can print to directly, since it has wireless tech buit in. I think this means you don't have to have to connected to another computer that is then itself connected to a wireless network. So you can put a computer upstairs, the printer in the kitchen down stairs, and sit with your iPhone in the basement and print from either location to the same printer.

Otherwise it'll work just like bonjour does now. You have an iMac with the printer attached, and if your iMac is on and connected to the network, you can print from your iOS device to that printer.

I think that is why you need the 10.6.5 beta of OS X installed, because your computer needs to recognize the input from the iOS device and then tell the printer to print.

That's my interpretation.

I don't think so. Your printer will ether have to be an HP ePrint printer, or shared by a Mac or PC. This will probably require a software proxy piece running on the Mac or PC that will accept the print job via AirPrint from an iOS device and then send this print job to the locally attached printer, using the printer driver installed on the Mac or PC. I do not see how a network printer not attached to a Mac or PC and not compatible with AirPrint can accept a print job from an iOS device without the iOS device having a locally installed printer driver.

From what can surmise, you don't need a special printer, and any printer that connects to and works with one of your Macs will work. The special HP one means you go iOS->Network->Printer, not iOS->network->Mac->Network->Printer

-Ugh -- I'm afraid this is probably right.... However, I would feel at least a little better if this were officially clarified by Apple --even if I don't like it, I'll get over it faster if they would just acknowledge it!

It's called ePrint. HP is offering printers with it this fall. You only need it to print directly from iOS to a printer. Current printers hooked up to a Mac or PC will also work.

Save your rant until you learn a few things about idioms because "Cotton to" is a fairly common one, especially in the southern US.

AirPrint vs Bonjour ???

So how is this any different that printers that already support Bonjour? I would *think* that Bonjour printers would "just work" with iOS 4.2 unless there is something more to AirPrint than wireless networking. :)
