so the iPod Touch has an IPS or not? thats the biggest question.

jobs was like "24 bit color" during the keynote. TN panels can have 24 bit color, just not 24 bit truecolor.

engadget's video clearly shows the iPod Touch's display went all washed out and blue as they were comparing thickness.

no where on apple's site does it mention anything about IPS or TN or 24 bit color. literally nothing beside its retina display at 960x640. and there is a clear difference ipad/iphone4 pages touting IPS where it was not mentioned on ipodtouch's page.

Actually it appears only the iPad tech specs page mentions IPS. The iPod touch and the iPhone 4 don't mention it on their pages.

I haven't ordered the new Nano yet because I want to see the colours in store.

Anyone know when they'll be in Apple stores?

What colour is everyone else ordering?

I'm ordering an invisible one because that new nano is a piece of junk.

iPod Touch Thumbs are Up!

Big thumbs up to the new, slimmer yet so much more capable touch:cool:. Too bad about the lo-res camera, but let's face it, these are only pics for the internet and the video will be fine. As for the Nano- a step back, is it not?

I understand it has been the favourite size/price for some people who don't want a Touch, however thin- will this be enough to get them to upgrade to one anyway? Something tells me not and in fact the last gen Nanos may even be sought after items:p!

I agree. The old nano was pretty versatile. This one is only good for people with small hands who want limited capabilities.

bump, no one answered me :(, I'm really curious, please help.

contacts app is still there. it was just moved to the second screen in iOS 4 so you don't see it on the pics at apple.com

OK, I carped about how the Shuffle redesign sucked and would be a fail for Apple. Well, I stopped at the local Best Buy to get one more of the older stick Shuffles and they had three of the Blue ones left.

And they were all covered with a thick layer of dust!

Perhaps the redesign wasn't such a bad idea... If the 'stick' Shuffle sold that poorly, going back to a similar design, that worked, seems like a great idea now...

As for the Nano... Um, I'm still not sure... I guess I'll have to see one and play with one to be convinced...

Going back to the previous Shuffle design (i.e., the athlete-friendly design) was a wise decision by Apple. Sales of the stick Shuffle appear to have been abysmal - I honestly never, ever, saw anyone with one. Not a soul. Whereas the previous model had a higher second-hand value than the stick model, because it didn't require a special headphone cable, and had actual buttons that could be accessed while running, etc.

the new nano just sucks!

Without trying I know that, why? It has no tactile buttons for the basic controls anymore!

Ever since the first walkman, all mobile music devices offered tactile controls the basic functionality of their primary task: play/pause, next/previous, fastforward/rewind, volume up/down. After quickly learning the controls one could easily use a musicplayer (discman, walkman, mp3player) blindly! Why is that important, well:
  1. I'm in bed and I wanna skip that song, rewind a bit etc. etc. without having to blind myself by having to look at a shiny LED screen that would disrupt my falling asleep! --> useless device
  2. I'm running and I just want to adjust volume or skip a song without having to hold that thing in front of my face and having to stare at the screen. --> new nano = useless device
  3. I'm walking in the rain and have my iPod in my hand, in the pocket of my rain jacket and now I want to skip, fforward, etc. --> again: new nano = useless

I can think of loads of situations where I depend on a tactile interface for such a device. The iPod nano was the perfect portable Music-Player, now it's not! Shuffle is the only one left that can be controlled blindly, yet you can never handpick a song on that, WTF! An iPhone or iPod Touch is a different class of device, much more powerful and those are not intended as dedicated music players, people usually look at the screen anyways, but the PURE iPod?!? Come on! All this crazyness about touch-displays, does Apple not have a single employee who is intelligent enough to grasp that pure touch-control may not always be desirable, maybe even render certain devices useless in like half the situations they're generally operated in?

The best iPod is now DEAD! Apple had better dedicated music-players five years ago! Shame on you Steve! When my 3rd gen nano (=phatpod) dies I'll be looking for a clickwheel one. If I can't find one then I sure as hell have to purchase an mp3 player of some competitor, great move, Apple, you just rid yourself of one (or maybe millions) of (so far) happy customers, laughable!

To me, an iPod is about the ability to play music with good quality. But was there any reference in the Keynote about improved sound quality, improved headphones, etc? I am aware that :apple:'s music players are ranked at the top in regard of sound quality but still a few tweaks here and there, like frequency range, etc, would have been nice, no?

Looking through this thread, though, hardly anybody seems to care about that?

One option I have been wanting for a long time, is to being able to sync the equalizer settings with iTunes playlists and my iPods.

To me, an iPod is about the ability to play music with good quality.

Apple has given up "sound quality" a long time ago. Ever since the second MBP generation the Audio-Out jack i.e. is useless with low impedence headphones. The signal at the jack is over-amplified to an insane level (my guess is to power huge 300ohm headphones) so that every ordinary headphone gives you a nice white noise hiss, a punch in the face! I've had my 3rd gen MBP from 2007 at an Apple dealer four times for "repairs" before they and I realized that the new audio out jack just sucks!

Apple hasn't done a thing about this ever since... all the analog audio jacks now suck.... nobody seemed to care.

Ipod jacks still are far better, even though there's alot of headroom to improve like what you've mentioned.... equalizer settings from iTunes etc etc. But no. Apple is slowly but surely shifting its focus from high Quality + Design to Design and "coolness factor" alone.

I have noticed that, too. Sometimes when I am somewhere in an hotel, I rather use my iPod or iPhone to listen to music with my earphones, even when sitting in front of my MBP.

I'm with you that tactile controls are important but you do realize the new nano still supports the headphone remote so if you have the headphones with remote or are willing to buy some (and you don't have to buy apple's, I love my Klipsch s4i's) you will still have those controls, least for changing playlists, fast forwarding, rewinding, playing, and pausing (and honestly for other than that I had to look at the ipod anyways to pick stuff, and when you actually haev to look at the screen, I find touch is way quicker than the click wheel, specially when they make the clickwheel as small as it was on the fifth gen's. It was a tad bit frustrating to use).

I mean if htey didn't support the headphone remote, I'd be totally with you that it was a really stupid move. Shoot, that's my rant when people want to see the laptop go way in favor of the ipad. Sorry, but if nothing else, I like having a keyboard since I can touch type (but you can't very well touch type on a touch screen keyboard). Yes, sometimes physical buttons do have advantage over touch.

do you realize, that I don't want to use the crappy iPod earplugs but my highend ones that cost more than the device?

In audiophile circles, the iPods are not considered to be top for sound quality. In fact, many consider 'Cowon' to be the best for that - although I haven't heard one of their players, so I can't give a personal opinion on that.

I've always noticed the hiss on the headphone jack too (it was even present on the last of the PowerBooks), and assume that it is due to electical interference. I own a pair of 300ohm headphones (Sennheiser HD650s) and I seriously doubt that my MBP would power them! :) I use an AirPort Express feeding a DAC/headphone amplifier over fibre optic cable to listen to music.

I just had a look at their website. I must say, the players look very very nice. Would like to hear one of those in comparison to my trusty iPod :)
